Ja Morant injury news has delivered the first major blow of the Portland Trail Blazers' promising season, with the two-time All-Star guard ruled out for at least four weeks after suffering a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in Thursday night's loss to his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies. The Trail Blazers announced the diagnosis on Friday, October 30, 2026, confirming that Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks — a timeline that means Portland will be without its starting point guard until at least the start of December, and that could stretch longer depending on how the hamstring responds to treatment.

The injury struck in the cruelest possible setting: Morant's first game against the franchise that drafted him, traded him and watched him become a star, in front of a Portland crowd that had spent the opening week of the season falling for its new backcourt. Instead of a revenge-game statement, the night ended with Morant grabbing at the back of his left leg, walking off in the fourth quarter and never returning, as Memphis pulled away to a 124-103 victory that handed Portland its first defeat of the season.

Key Points

• Portland Trail Blazers guard Ja Morant has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will miss at least four weeks, the team announced Friday, October 30, 2026.
• Morant suffered the injury on Thursday, October 29, in his first game against his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies, a 124-103 Portland loss at home.
• He exited in the fourth quarter and did not return, finishing with 14 points and three assists in 23 minutes; coach Micah Nori said Morant felt a twinge in his hamstring.
• Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks, not automatically cleared, and ESPN reports he will miss at least the next 15 games.
• Portland, 3-1 and owners of the NBA's No. 3 offense through Thursday, begins a four-game road trip at the Utah Jazz on Saturday without him.
• Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson are expected to absorb the backcourt minutes, with Deni Avdija taking on a larger playmaking role.

What Happened

The moment came late in a game that had already slipped away from Portland. Morant, playing against Memphis for the first time since the Grizzlies traded him to the Trail Blazers on June 29, grabbed at his left hamstring and signalled for attention. He was ruled out with 7:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, according to reports of the game, and the Trail Blazers pulled their starters a couple of minutes later as the Grizzlies closed out a 124-103 win. Morant finished the night with 14 points and three assists in 23 minutes — a quiet line by his standards, and one that now reads very differently in hindsight.

Trail Blazers coach Micah Nori addressed the injury after the game, before the full diagnosis was known. Nori said Morant had felt a twinge in his hamstring before leaving the game — the kind of phrasing that, in the NBA, can mean anything from a night off to a month on the sidelines. By Friday afternoon, the picture was clear, and it was the worse end of that range. ESPN's Shams Charania was first to report the Grade 2 diagnosis and the four-week minimum absence, and the Trail Blazers then confirmed it in their own statement.

"Trail Blazers guard Ja Morant sustained a left hamstring injury during last night's game against the Memphis Grizzlies," the team said in its announcement. "Imaging revealed a grade two left hamstring strain. Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks." That last sentence matters: re-evaluation is not a return date. It is the point at which the medical staff will judge whether the partial tear has healed enough for Morant to begin ramping back up — and hamstrings, notoriously, punish players who rush them.

The timing could hardly be worse for Portland. The Trail Blazers had opened the season 3-0, scoring 124, 128 and 136 points in their first three games, and entered Friday at 3-1 with the league's third-ranked offense through Thursday's games. Morant, paired in the backcourt with Damian Lillard, had given Portland a second downhill attacker and a second playmaker, and the early returns had been genuinely encouraging: a season-high 23 points in Tuesday's win over the Los Angeles Lakers, and averages of 15.8 points and 5.5 assists across his first four games in a Blazers uniform. Now that experiment goes on hold for at least a month.

Background: A Summer Trade, a Fast Start, and a Fragile History

To understand why this injury stings so much in Portland, start with the summer. The Grizzlies traded Morant, a two-time All-Star and one of the most electrifying guards of his generation, to the Trail Blazers on June 29 in a deal built around Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, according to ESPN's reporting of the trade. It was, by any measure, a gamble — not on Morant's talent, which has never been in doubt, but on his availability. Portland bet that a change of scenery, a lighter early-season workload and a deep backcourt would keep its new star on the floor. For four games, the bet looked inspired.

Morant's history explains the caution. The 27-year-old has dealt with a series of injuries in recent seasons, and he played in just 20 games in 2025-26 because of an elbow sprain, according to ESPN. Analysts noted after Friday's announcement that Morant has not played in six straight games since March 2023, a statistic cited by The Athletic's John Hollinger that captures, in one line, how stop-start the last few seasons have been. A Grade 2 hamstring strain — a partial tear of the muscle fibres, as opposed to the milder Grade 1 strain or the complete rupture of a Grade 3 — typically heals over weeks rather than days, and it carries a real risk of recurrence if a player returns before the muscle has fully regained its strength.

There is also the context of the game itself. Thursday was not just any loss: it was Morant's first meeting with Memphis since the trade, a "revenge game" in the modern NBA sense, against a Grizzlies side that has started the season impressively. Memphis, led by rookie Cameron Boozer's first career triple-double in that very game, improved to 5-0 with the win in Portland — a result covered in our earlier report on Boozer's historic night. For Morant, the night was supposed to be a statement. Instead, it became the latest entry in an injury file that Portland had hoped was closing.

Nor is Morant alone on the early-season injury list. His former Memphis teammate Jaren Jackson Jr. is expected to miss at least six to eight weeks with a torn MCL in his right knee, and stars across the league have already missed time in the opening week. The NBA's early-season injury wave has become one of the defining storylines of the first fortnight, and Morant's absence now joins it — a reminder that even the most carefully managed roster can be undone by one awkward stride.

Ja Morant Injury: What the Diagnosis Really Means

A Grade 2 hamstring strain sits in the middle of the severity scale, and that is precisely why the four-week timeline should be read as a floor, not a promise. Grade 1 strains involve minor damage and often cost a player days; Grade 2 strains involve a partial tear, with noticeable loss of strength and function, and typically require weeks of rehabilitation; Grade 3 strains are complete ruptures that can require surgery and months away. Morant's diagnosis puts him firmly in the middle category: serious enough to shut him down, not so severe as to threaten his season — provided the rehab is handled patiently.

The hamstring is also a uniquely unforgiving muscle for a player like Morant. His game is built on explosion: the first step that beats a defender, the vertical leap that turns a drive into a poster, the change of pace that freezes help defenders. Every one of those movements loads the hamstring at full stretch and full speed. That is why teams are so cautious with these injuries, and why "re-evaluated in four weeks" is the language Portland used rather than "back in four weeks." The re-evaluation will test strength, flexibility and sprint tolerance; only then will a return-to-play ramp begin, and that ramp itself takes time.

For Portland's medical staff, the challenge is compounded by Morant's recent history. A player who has missed long stretches in consecutive seasons cannot simply be rushed back to chase a November win. The Trail Blazers' depth — the very reason Nori said earlier this week that he had sought to limit minutes for Lillard and Morant — now becomes the plan rather than the luxury. If Portland can stay afloat through the next 15 games, Morant returns to a team still in the race. If the hamstring is rushed and re-torn, the absence could stretch into months.

Reactions and Quotes

The Trail Blazers' official statement was brief and clinical, as team injury announcements tend to be: a left hamstring injury sustained against Memphis, imaging confirming a Grade 2 strain, and a re-evaluation in four weeks. The reporting around it filled in the human detail. Charania's report on Friday — "Portland Trail Blazers' Ja Morant has sustained a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will miss at least four weeks, sources tell ESPN" — set the timeline that Portland then confirmed, and it framed the absence in the starkest terms: at least a month, at minimum.

Nori's postgame comment on Thursday night now reads as the first warning sign. "Morant felt a twinge in his hamstring before leaving the game," the first-year coach said, a description that sounded minor in the moment and proved anything but. Nori had also said earlier in the week that he wanted to manage the minutes of both Lillard and Morant to take advantage of Portland's backcourt depth — a philosophy that will now be tested in earnest, with that depth asked to carry the team through its first extended stretch without its new star.

Reaction from around the league and from fans was immediate and sympathetic, if weary. Morant is one of the NBA's great entertainers, and the sight of him leaving a revenge game against his old team with yet another injury drew the same response it always does: frustration that availability, not ability, keeps interrupting one of the league's most watchable careers. Analysts also pointed to the trade context — Portland knew the risk when it acquired Morant, and the next month will show whether the roster around him is deep enough to make that risk pay off.

Why It Matters

This injury matters beyond one player's absence because it tests the entire premise of Portland's season. The Trail Blazers rebuilt their identity around a Lillard-Morant backcourt: two stars who can each run the offense, each score 25 on a given night, and each take pressure off the other. Through four games, that identity produced the NBA's third-best offense and a 3-0 start that had Portland fans dreaming bigger than a play-in finish. Losing Morant for 15 or more games does not end that dream, but it changes its shape. Lillard will face more defensive attention, Avdija will be asked to create more, and the bench guards will be asked to do far more than spot duty.

It also matters for the Western Conference race, which is unforgiving of slow starts. Fifteen games is nearly a fifth of the season, and in a conference where a handful of losses can separate home-court advantage from the play-in tournament, a month without a starting point guard can reshape a team's spring. Portland's saving grace is its schedule and its depth: a four-game road trip starting in Utah is a test, but the Blazers have veteran cover in Holiday and a young guard in Henderson who has been waiting for exactly this kind of opportunity.

And it matters for Morant himself. At 27, he remains in his prime, but primes are not indefinite, and every lost month is a month of peak athleticism that cannot be recovered. His final season in Memphis was limited to 20 games; his Portland debut season was supposed to be the reset. Instead, the reset now includes a month of rehab, and the conversation around Morant — fair or not — will again turn to durability. The best answer to that conversation is a full, patient recovery and a strong return. The worst would be a rushed comeback and a second strain.

What Happens Next

Portland begins life without Morant on Saturday, opening a four-game road trip against the Utah Jazz. That trip will be the first real measure of the post-Morant rotation: Holiday, the veteran champion, brings steadiness and defense; Henderson, the young guard in what analysts have called a make-or-break contract year, brings upside and urgency — he has averaged just 7.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists through four games, and November now becomes his audition. Avdija, who can handle, pass and score, is the likeliest candidate for a larger creative role, and Lillard will inevitably carry a heavier offensive load.

The formal checkpoint comes in four weeks, when Morant will be re-evaluated. If the hamstring has healed cleanly, a return-to-play progression — running, cutting, contact, full practice — would follow, pointing to a return around the start of December at the earliest. If the re-evaluation shows lingering weakness or soreness, the timeline extends, and Portland will have to manage without him deeper into December. Either way, the team has given no indication it will rush the process, and Morant's own history argues strongly against it.

Beyond the medical timeline, the next month will answer a roster question: is Portland's depth real? The Trail Blazers built a backcourt with three starting-calibre guards precisely so that an injury to one would not sink the season. The next 15 games will show whether that construction holds. If Holiday and Henderson stabilise the rotation and Lillard keeps the offense humming, Morant will return to a team still in the thick of the race — and this injury will be remembered as a footnote to a promising season. If the offense stalls, the conversation will turn, quickly, to how much one hamstring can change a franchise's year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will Ja Morant be out with his hamstring injury? Morant will miss at least four weeks with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, the Trail Blazers announced on October 30, 2026. He will be re-evaluated in four weeks, which is a medical checkpoint, not a guaranteed return date.
