Intel stock crashed on Friday, October 30, 2026, plunging about 29% in a single session — the chipmaker's worst day on the stock market since 1974 — after a weak fourth-quarter forecast exposed just how fragile the personal computer recovery has become. The sell-off wiped roughly $137 billion to $140 billion from Intel's market value, the largest one-day loss of market capitalisation in the company's history, and dragged semiconductor stocks around the world lower with it.

The Intel stock crash turned a strong year for the shares upside down in a matter of hours. Intel entered Thursday's earnings report up about 150% for 2026, yet even after Friday's rout the stock remained up more than 70% for the year — a reminder of how far it had run before investors decided the turnaround story had moved too fast.

Key Points

• Intel shares fell about 29% on Friday, October 30, 2026, their worst day since the 1970s, after a weak fourth-quarter outlook.
• The drop erased roughly $140 billion in market value, the biggest one-day market-cap loss on record for Intel, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
• Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion and adjusted earnings of 25 cents a share, well below analyst expectations.
• The US government's 10% stake in Intel lost about $12 billion in value in one session, while Nvidia's Intel holding fell by about $6 billion.
• Chip stocks fell across the board, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.9% on Friday as investors reassessed AI and PC spending.

What Happened

Intel shares closed Thursday at $92.07 and opened Friday at $68.35, already down more than 25% at the opening bell. The decline deepened through the session, with the stock at one point down 30.5% intraday — deeper than the nearly 30% fall on July 5, 1974, which Yahoo Finance's analysis of closing prices back to May 1973 identified as Intel's previous worst day. Reports written while the market was still open put the fall at about 29%, roughly tied with, or just short of, that 1974 plunge, and comfortably ahead of the 26% drop in August 2024, now only the third-biggest single-day fall in Intel's history.

The trigger was Intel's own guidance, issued after Thursday's close. The company forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, below the average analyst estimate of about $17.07 billion compiled by LSEG. Adjusted earnings were guided at 25 cents a share, against expectations of 43 to 44 cents. Finance chief David Zinsner also said Intel does not expect positive cash flow this year, and warned: "We see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year."

That warning landed in a market already nervous about technology valuations. Alphabet had fallen more than 12% on Thursday in its worst session on record, after its artificial intelligence spending pushed free cash flow negative. On Friday, Amazon fell 1.4% after reporting a third-quarter miss on revenue and earnings, even as it maintained its 2026 capital expenditure forecast of $220 billion. "The market is in a sell first, ask questions later mood right now, and Intel's warning has given investors an easy excuse to take some money off the table across chip stocks," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Background/Context

Intel's third-quarter results themselves were not weak. Revenue rose 21% year on year to $16.51 billion, adjusted earnings of 52 cents a share beat the FactSet expectation of 41 cents, and the company reported a GAAP profit of $3.32 billion. Data centre and AI revenue jumped 78% to $7.3 billion. The problem was the other half of the business: client computing, the PC chip division, fell 5% year on year to $8.1 billion, and Intel said PC chip sales would fall more than 20% sequentially this quarter after a 5% drop in the September period.

Two forces are squeezing the PC market at once. Memory prices have risen sharply as suppliers shift capacity toward high-bandwidth memory chips for AI systems, raising the cost of building PCs and weighing on already weak consumer demand. Global PC shipments fell 4% in the second quarter from a year earlier, according to Counterpoint Research. At the same time, Intel is still absorbing the disruption from an explosion at its fabrication facility in Israel earlier in October, which killed two workers and seriously injured a third, disrupted shipments of 10-nanometre chips, and is expected to reduce revenue by about $600 million over two quarters.

The context matters because Intel's rally in 2026 was built on a turnaround narrative. Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan, who took over in March 2025, has been trying to revive a company that missed the early years of the AI boom, while investing heavily in manufacturing expansion. The stock hit a record high on June 22, 2026, and has since given back about half of that peak. The US government took a 10% stake in Intel more than a year ago at President Donald Trump's urging, and Nvidia also invested heavily in the company — which is why Friday's fall had a political as well as a market dimension, cutting about $12 billion from the value of the government's holding and about $6 billion from Nvidia's, according to CNBC reporting, although the government's investment remained profitable overall.

Intel Stock Crash: The Chip Rout Spreads Worldwide

The Intel stock crash did not stay contained to one company. Semiconductor stocks including Advanced Micro Devices, Arm Holdings, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron fell between 2% and 10% on Friday. Server makers felt it too, with Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Super Micro Computer down between 6% and 10%, reflecting investor caution toward companies tied to the semiconductor and AI infrastructure supply chain.

In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 Technology Index fell 2%, with sector heavyweight ASML shedding 4.6%. US-listed shares of TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, fell 3.3%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9% on Friday, capping a difficult week for technology companies during earnings season. Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management, summed up the concern: "It will be important to see if Intel can expand the highly profitable Xeon product supply to help offset this developing weakness in PC. Bottom line, weaker sales volumes, higher manufacturing costs, and an out-of-cycle product mix is a recipe for the stock to decline over the near term as future earnings are under a lot of pressure."

Reactions/Quotes

Analysts moved quickly to cut their ratings. Bank of America downgraded Intel to Neutral and cut its price target to $100 from $145. D.A. Davidson downgraded the stock from buy to neutral, with its analysts writing: "However it is hard to justify the current multiple when weakness is so significant." Intel's finance chief, David Zinsner, was blunt about the outlook on the earnings call, saying the PC slowdown would continue "at least through the first half of next year" and that the company does not expect positive cash flow this year.

Intel itself pointed investors toward its manufacturing progress as the longer-term answer. The company said it is producing its 18A chip at high volume at a new Arizona fabrication plant, expects its next Arizona fab to begin operations by the end of 2028, plans to announce two customers over the next two quarters, and said it is making progress on its 14A chips. Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan has previously said the company would give priority to Xeon server chip supply, a highly profitable line that could help offset PC weakness — if supply can be expanded fast enough.

Why It Matters

Friday's crash matters for three reasons. First, it is a reality check on the AI investment boom: even a company whose data centre and AI revenue grew 78% can lose $140 billion in a day when its core PC business disappoints, because investors are now asking harder questions about when massive chip and infrastructure spending turns into cash. Second, it shows how exposed the wider market has become to a handful of semiconductor names — when Intel falls, server makers, memory suppliers and index heavyweights fall with it. Third, it puts a public spotlight on the US government's role as a major Intel shareholder: a 10% stake means taxpayers now ride the same volatility as any other large investor, even if that investment remains in profit overall.

For ordinary consumers, the memory crunch behind the sell-off is the most tangible part of the story. If memory prices stay high because suppliers prioritise AI chips, PCs get more expensive to build, and that cost eventually reaches buyers — at exactly the moment when households are already sensitive to prices ahead of the holiday season.

What Happens Next

Three things will decide whether Friday was a reset or the start of a longer slide. The first is Intel's fourth-quarter delivery: if PC sales fall by less than the feared 20%-plus sequential drop, or if Xeon server supply expands quickly, the guidance miss may look like caution rather than collapse. The second is memory pricing — a stabilisation in memory costs would ease pressure on PC makers and on Intel's margins. The third is the broader earnings season: with Alphabet, Amazon and other big technology names also under pressure, investors will be watching whether the next set of results restores confidence in AI spending or deepens the sell-off.

Analysts will also watch Intel's customer announcements. The company has promised two new foundry customers over the next two quarters, and progress on 14A chips. A credible foundry win would support the turnaround story that Friday's crash damaged; another delay would make the downgrades look prescient. In the meantime, prediction markets have already repriced Intel's chances of touching $150 this year to just 4%, according to Manifold data cited in market coverage.
