Baylor crushed UCF 41-9 in the Space Game on Friday night, October 30, 2026, turning a week of coaching turmoil into a statement win at the Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando. Florida transfer DJ Lagway threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, Baylor's defence sacked UCF quarterbacks seven times, and the Bears spoiled the Knights' 10th annual Space Game celebration before a sellout crowd of 45,906.

The Baylor UCF Space Game result was stunning for how one-sided it became. UCF arrived with momentum from an upset of second-ranked BYU the previous week, yet never led, never reached the end zone, and managed only 66 rushing yards all night. Baylor, playing its first game since parting ways with head coach Dave Aranda five days earlier, improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12, while UCF fell to 4-4 and 2-3 in conference play.

Key Points

• Baylor beat UCF 41-9 on Friday, October 30, 2026, in UCF's 10th annual Space Game at the Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando.
• DJ Lagway finished 16 of 25 passing for 319 yards and four touchdowns in his best performance of the fall for Baylor.
• Interim head coach Joe Klanderman won his debut after taking over when Baylor parted ways with Dave Aranda on October 25.
• UCF scored only on three Will Stone field goals, including a school-record 57-yarder on the final play of the first half.
• Baylor's defence recorded seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss, and held UCF to 66 rushing yards; the Bears totalled 503 yards of offence.

What Happened

Baylor jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back. UCF finally got on the scoreboard with 3:24 remaining in the second quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Will Stone, but Baylor extended the advantage to 20-3 before Stone connected on a school-record 57-yard field goal to close the first half, sending the Knights into the break trailing 20-6.

Any hope of a second-half comeback disappeared quickly. After UCF was forced to punt on its opening drive of the second half, Baylor scored touchdowns on its first two possessions to take control. Lagway capped those drives with touchdown passes of 21 and 77 yards, pushing Baylor's lead to 34-6 and effectively ending the contest as a competition.

The 77-yard strike to Gavin Freeman was the signature play of the night. Lagway hit on four of his five deep throws of 15 yards or more, and he spread his four touchdown passes around: two to former Florida teammate Tony Livingston, the 77-yarder to Freeman, and a fourth to Matthew Klopfenstein, who was all alone from the 4-yard line. Lagway finished 16 of 25 for 319 yards, and Baylor finished with 503 total yards, including 319 through the air.

UCF's quarterback situation made a difficult night worse. Keyone Jenkins, making his sixth straight start, was limited to 14 of 21 passing for 82 yards and an interception before exiting early in the third quarter after reaggravating an ankle injury. He required help off the field from the training staff and checked into the medical tent after taking a hit around the ankles while releasing a screen pass to Duke Watson.

Alonza Barnett III, thrust into action on UCF's second drive after half-time, provided the Knights' longest play of the evening: a 67-yard completion to Josh Derry that set up a 35-yard field goal by Stone, his third of the night. But Baylor tested Barnett's mobility immediately, sacking him on his second snap, and forced him into six straight incompletions at one stretch, including a pair of fourth-down failures. A drive that reached inside the Bears' 10 stalled when Devin Turner sacked Barnett for an 8-yard loss, resulting in what UCF's own report called a meaningless field goal.

Background/Context

The context made Baylor's dominance even more surprising. Klanderman, previously the Bears' defensive coordinator, assumed head coaching responsibilities for the remainder of the season when Baylor parted ways with Aranda on October 25. The Bears had lost their previous two games, including a first defeat to Kansas in 14 head-to-head contests dating back to 2007. Instead of a team in disarray, Baylor looked galvanised from the opening kick-off.

UCF, by contrast, was supposed to be the team riding a wave. The Knights had upset second-ranked BYU the previous week, with Jenkins picking up a pair of national honours for his performance, and they were celebrating the 10th annual Space Game — the night when UCF adopts its Citronauts moniker and wears special uniforms. The crowd of 45,906 marked the first sellout since the renovated Roth Tower opened and the eighth-largest attendance in Bounce House history. UCF fell to 8-2 all-time in Space Games.

The head-to-head history also favoured Baylor, and Friday continued a remarkable run. With less than four minutes to play in its 2023 Big 12 home opener, UCF held a 35-7 lead against a seemingly beleaguered Baylor. From that moment on, the Bears have utterly dominated the series. That day, Blake Shapen led the largest comeback in school history as Baylor scored 29 unanswered points. Last year, the Bears brushed off back-to-back losses and temporarily eased pressure on Aranda with a 30-3 blowout in Waco, Texas — the first game in a decade in which UCF failed to score a touchdown. Since that four-score UCF lead in 2023, Baylor has outscored the Knights 100-12 across nine-plus quarters.

Friday followed a similar script despite the coaching change. Baylor battered the Knights in the trenches, harassing Jenkins and Barnett on seemingly every dropback. The Bears led the Big 12, and ranked in the top five nationally, in both sacks and tackles for loss entering the weekend, and they added seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss on Friday. UCF gained 66 yards on the ground — 50 of which came from third-string signal-caller Rocco Marriott on the game's final drive.

Baylor UCF Space Game: Lagway, Klanderman and a Defence That Took Over

The Baylor UCF Space Game turned on two things: Lagway's deep passing and a Baylor front seven that UCF could not block. Head coach Scott Frost did not hide from that assessment afterwards. "That's the best front-seven that I've seen, that we've played," Frost said. "We got whipped tonight. I know the narrative's going to be that we weren't ready to play. I take that. I don't know how I could have messaged it anymore or more often to the guys."

Klanderman, meanwhile, deflected the praise for his debut win. "People don't need to be congratulating me. I'm not the one that did anything; they're the ones that did it," Klanderman said. "I'm speechless with how these guys came out. I knew that they were galvanized. I knew they had a lot of love for each other, and I figured they were going to come out and play with passion and energy. But we played well, too. It was really fun to watch these guys."

Barnett's return was the one subplot that offered UCF something to build on. Brought in as the Knights' starter after leading James Madison to the College Football Playoff and earning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honours, Barnett missed the previous five games with a hamstring injury sustained in the final minutes of a September 12 loss to Pittsburgh. Listed as a game-time decision for the second straight week, he finally returned on Friday night. "I thought he did some good things, made some good throws," Frost said. "Whoever was playing quarterback, it's going to be hard if we don't block better and create a running game. I mean, we couldn't get anything going in the first half."

UCF defensive tackle Horace Lockett summed up the night with admirable bluntness: "College football is a weird game. Them guys are on scholarship, too. They just made more plays than us, so we've got to get better."

Reactions/Quotes

The most memorable individual performance on a miserable night for UCF belonged to its kicker. On the final play of a dismal first half, redshirt senior Will Stone made UCF history with his 57-yard field goal. Largely used as a kickoff specialist during a four-year tenure at Texas, Stone's previous career-long make was 40 yards — last month against Georgia State. Eddie O'Brien set the previous record of 55 yards during the 1985 season, when the Knights played in NCAA Division II, to give UCF its first head-to-head win over Bethune-Cookman. Colton Boomer matched it in a 2023 victory at Boise State, a game in which he also hit a 40-yard winner as time expired.

Stone learned of the accomplishment near the end of the fourth quarter. "It felt great, I'm not going to lie," Stone said. "It's a really cool accomplishment, but I'm not making that if it's not for my snapper, my holder and those other 10 guys blocking for me. They did a really good job today of holding a really good pocket. Kyle (Hicks), the snapper, he was money all day. Holder hit the spot every time. Those guys did 99% of the job."

Frost's post-game honesty — "We got whipped tonight" — will likely define how this loss is remembered in Orlando, at least until UCF gets a chance to answer it on the field. Klanderman's line — "People don't need to be congratulating me" — will define how Baylor remembers a debut win that arrived in the most turbulent week of its season.

Why It Matters

Friday's result matters for both programmes, and for the Big 12 race. For Baylor, it proves the season did not end with Aranda's departure. A team that had lost two straight, including a humbling first loss to Kansas in nearly two decades of meetings, instead produced its most complete performance of the year, with a quarterback playing his best football of the fall and a defence that led the conference in disruption living up to that billing. At 5-3 and 3-2 in the Big 12, Baylor is still very much alive in the conference race.

For UCF, the loss is a reality check after the BYU upset. The Knights could not run the ball, could not protect either quarterback, and could not score a touchdown against a defence that entered the weekend as one of the most disruptive in the country. The 41-9 scoreline, on the programme's showcase night, in front of a sellout crowd, will sting — and it raises immediate questions about the quarterback position, with Jenkins hurt again and Barnett returning from a five-game absence in the middle of a blowout.

For the wider Big 12, Baylor's win is a reminder of how quickly the conference can turn. A week ago, the Bears looked like a programme in transition; a week later, they look like a team nobody will want to face if Lagway keeps throwing the deep ball this well and the front seven keeps playing this way.

What Happens Next

UCF will have an extra day to regroup before attempting to snap its 12-game losing streak on the road. The Knights visit Kansas on November 7, with kickoff time and television details still to be announced. The biggest question for Frost all week will be at quarterback: whether Jenkins' ankle recovers in time, whether Barnett — who showed rust and flashes in equal measure on Friday — is ready to start, and whether the offensive line can give either of them a chance against another Big 12 front.

Baylor, meanwhile, gets to build on a debut win for Klanderman rather than answering questions about a coaching change. The Bears will want to see whether Lagway's best performance of the fall was a one-night explosion or the start of a run, and whether a defence that has now battered UCF for nine-plus quarters can do the same to the rest of the Big 12 schedule. If Friday was a true turning point rather than a single great night, Baylor's season — written off by many when Aranda departed — may yet have a second act.
