What Happened

The shooting took place inside the seasonal Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center, a regional shopping mall in Fairfield, in Solano County. Families had been shopping for last-minute Halloween supplies inside the store when the gunfire began, according to local reporting of the police response. The incident triggered a large law-enforcement response at the mall on Friday evening.

Officers arriving at the scene found seven victims with gunshot wounds, police said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The six survivors were transported to area hospitals, with at least three listed in critical condition. Reports citing the Fairfield Police Department said victims were found across three locations in the mall, a detail that underlines how the scene spread beyond a single spot inside the shopping centre.

Chief Marshall addressed reporters late on Friday night, confirming the casualty figures and the condition of the wounded. "There is still a very active crime scene and investigation going on right now," he said, noting that investigators had not yet identified the "suspect or suspects" responsible. He added that no areas outside the Solano Town Center mall were on lockdown, a reassurance aimed at residents in the surrounding area as the investigation continued through the night.

Suisun City police provided mutual aid and the California Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control and building searches, according to reports of the response. The Fairfield Police Department asked anyone with information to contact the department, giving a tip line of 707-428-7600 and an email address, 1030mall@fairfield.ca.gov, for witnesses to share what they saw.

Background/Context

Fairfield is a city of roughly 120,000 people in Solano County, about 47 miles northeast of San Francisco, midway between the Bay Area and Sacramento. The Solano Town Center is its main regional mall, and its Spirit Halloween outlet is a seasonal store that opens in the run-up to October 31, selling costumes, decorations and party supplies. On the Friday before Halloween, such stores are typically at their busiest, with families making final purchases for costumes and parties.

The timing is part of why the shooting drew immediate national attention. It happened on the eve of Halloween, a night when children and families are out in large numbers, and it came at a moment when shoppers were inside the store itself. Police have not said whether the victims were store employees, customers, or a mix of both, and they have not released the identities of any of the seven people shot. The motive also remains under investigation, and police have not described a weapon, a number of shots, or a sequence of events inside the store.

Investigators said the shooting was not believed to be connected to any other incidents, an important clarification on a weekend when another, separate shooting at a Spirit Halloween store had already made headlines. That earlier incident took place on Friday afternoon in Madison Heights, Michigan, where a 21-year-old man was shot inside a Spirit Halloween store and later died in hospital, and a 21-year-old man was taken into custody. The two incidents involve different stores, different states, different victims and different police investigations, and Fairfield police have given no indication that the cases are linked. Readers should not confuse the two: in Fairfield, unlike in Madison Heights, no suspect had been detained as of Friday night.

Halloween itself falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The shooting therefore cast a shadow over the holiday weekend in Fairfield and across the Bay Area, even as police stressed that the danger was confined to the mall and that no wider lockdown was in force.

Fairfield Halloween Store Shooting: What Police Have — and Have Not — Confirmed

What is confirmed is narrow but clear: the place, the time, the casualty count and the state of the investigation. Seven people were shot at the Spirit Halloween store in the Solano Town Center shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30. One died at the scene. Six were hospitalised, at least three critically. No suspect has been identified and no arrest has been announced. No motive has been given. The victims have not been named.

What is not yet known is at least as important, and the article does not fill those gaps with speculation. Police have not said whether one person or more than one opened fire, whether the shooter or shooters fled the mall, whether the attack was targeted or random, or what led up to the gunfire. The Fairfield Police Department has described the scene as active and the investigation as ongoing, which means the confirmed picture is likely to change as detectives process evidence, review surveillance footage and interview witnesses.

That caution matters for readers following the story online, where early, unverified claims about shootings often circulate within minutes. The figures in this article come from the Fairfield Police Department's own late-night briefing, as reported by wire and broadcast outlets, and any future update should be judged against the department's next statement rather than against social-media rumour.

Reactions/Quotes

Chief Dan Marshall was the principal official voice on Friday night. His briefing set out the casualty figures and the critical condition of at least three victims, and his most-quoted line was a straightforward description of the operation under way: "There is still a very active crime scene and investigation going on right now." He also made clear that investigators had not identified the "suspect or suspects" responsible, and that no areas outside the Solano Town Center mall were on lockdown.

Beyond the police briefing, the immediate reaction was the visible one at the mall itself: a large deployment of officers, mutual aid from neighbouring Suisun City police, California Highway Patrol officers assisting with traffic and searches, and ambulances carrying the wounded to hospitals. Local news coverage described families who had been shopping for Halloween supplies caught up in the emergency response, though police have not released accounts from individual witnesses.

No statement from the mall's management, from Spirit Halloween, or from the victims' families had been reported as of the late-night briefing. That is normal in the first hours after a shooting of this kind, when the priority is medical care for the wounded and the preservation of the crime scene, and families are often notified privately before any public statement is made.

Why It Matters

The Fairfield shooting matters first because of its human cost: one person dead, six wounded, at least three critically, in a store full of families preparing for a holiday. It matters second because the shooter or shooters remained unidentified hours later, leaving a community with an open investigation rather than a resolution on the night itself. And it matters third because of its setting: a busy shopping mall on the eve of Halloween, a time when public spaces are crowded and when a violent incident reverberates far beyond the immediate victims.

It also matters for what it is not. It is not the Madison Heights shooting, it is not a confirmed targeted attack, and it is not, on the evidence available so far, part of a wider pattern. Keeping those distinctions clear is essential to honest reporting, particularly when two shootings at stores of the same chain occur on the same day in different states.

For Fairfield, a city that rarely features in national news, the incident will shape the Halloween weekend. The investigation will determine whether the mall reopens normally, whether additional security is put in place, and whether the community gets answers about who opened fire and why. For the wider United States, it is another reminder of how quickly an ordinary shopping trip can turn into a mass-casualty incident, and of how much still depends, in the first hours, on the work of local police and on witnesses coming forward.

What Happens Next

The Fairfield Police Department's investigation continues. Detectives will process the crime scene at the Solano Town Center, interview witnesses and staff, review surveillance footage from the mall and the store, and work with hospitals on the condition of the six wounded victims. Updates on their conditions are expected as hospitals release information, and the identity of the person killed at the scene is expected to be released once next of kin have been notified.

The search for a suspect is the most urgent strand of the investigation. Police have appealed directly for information, and anyone who was at the Solano Town Center on Friday evening, or who saw anything relevant, is asked to contact the Fairfield Police Department on 707-428-7600 or by email at 1030mall@fairfield.ca.gov. Further briefings from Chief Marshall or the department are expected as the investigation develops.

Halloween events in Fairfield and the surrounding area will go ahead against the backdrop of the shooting, with police having stressed that no wider lockdown is in force. Whether additional patrols are deployed around public celebrations on Saturday will be a decision for the department in the light of the investigation. This article will be updated as police confirm further details.
