Minnesota found its footing without its star. The Timberwolves Clippers 127-101 result on Friday, October 30, 2026, in Minneapolis was the Timberwolves' first victory since star guard Anthony Edwards was lost to a knee injury for the next two months, and it was built the way a team has to win when its best player is gone: shared scoring, a dominant night in the paint, and a fourth quarter that turned a comfortable lead into a rout.

What Happened

LaMelo Ball scored 24 points and dished seven assists as the Minnesota Timberwolves pulled away for a 127-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday in Minneapolis, according to Field Level Media's report on the game. Jaden McDaniels finished with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists for Minnesota, which snapped a two-game skid. Bones Hyland added 19 points off the bench.

Darius Garland scored 24 points on 10-for-22 shooting to lead Los Angeles, which took its fourth loss in a row. Brook Lopez scored 13 points off the bench, and Rui Hachimura and reserve Keaton Wagler finished with 12 points apiece. The Clippers, in other words, were not short of scoring. They were short of stops, and short of answers inside.

The Timberwolves dominated the paint, where they outscored the Clippers 62-42. They led by as many as 29 points and never trailed by more than three. That last number tells the story of the night as well as any other: this was not a game Minnesota stole late, or a game it chased. It took control early and, after one wobble in the third quarter, never gave it back.

The Timberwolves jumped out to an early double-digit lead. A 21-7 run put Minnesota on top by 11 points with less than a minute remaining in the first period. McDaniels made a driving layup to start the run, which included back-to-back three-pointers by Trey Lyles and Hyland. By halftime, the Timberwolves had increased their lead to 13 points. McDaniels missed a shot from 12 feet in the final minute of the first half, but Rudy Gobert got the rebound and made a putback layup to put Minnesota on top 69-56 with 24.6 seconds to go.

The Clippers fell further behind after the break. Derrick Jones Jr. made a floater to cut the deficit to nine points with 7:46 left in the third quarter, but the Timberwolves responded with a 17-9 run to pull ahead 94-77 with 1:46 remaining in the session. Dosunmu drained a three-pointer to push Minnesota past the 100-point mark with 8:18 remaining in the fourth quarter. The hoop started a 23-2 run that gave the Timberwolves a 29-point advantage, and the rest of the night was a formality.

Background and Context

The context of this win is an injury that changed Minnesota's season in a single moment. Edwards, the Timberwolves' star guard and the player their offence is built around, is out for the next two months with a knee injury. A team in that position faces two questions at once: who scores the points Edwards used to score, and who carries the belief that the season is still going somewhere. Friday's answer to the first question was encouraging, because it came from everywhere. Ball led with 24, McDaniels had 23, Hyland gave 19 off the bench, and Dosunmu, starting in Edwards' place for a second straight game, added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Dosunmu's role is the subplot worth following. Making a second straight start in Edwards' place is a statement of trust from the coaching staff, and his 15 points and seven rebounds against the Clippers repaid it. Starting is not just about the first five minutes; it is about setting the tone for a team that has lost its tone-setter, and Dosunmu's three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, the shot that pushed Minnesota past 100 and ignited the decisive 23-2 run, was exactly the kind of contribution a fill-in starter has to make.

The Clippers arrive in this story from the opposite direction. A fourth straight loss is a skid that starts to shape a season, especially when it comes with a defensive night like this one. Los Angeles scored enough to win most games: Garland's 24 on efficient shooting, 13 from Lopez off the bench, 12 each from Hachimura and Wagler. But giving up 127 points, losing the paint 62-42, and trailing by as many as 29 points points to a team that could not protect the rim or control the tempo. The Jones floater that cut the lead to nine in the third quarter was the Clippers' best moment of the night, and it lasted about four minutes before Minnesota's 17-9 response restored order.

The NBA Cup setting adds a small extra layer. Friday's games counted toward the league's in-season tournament, which means results carry a little more weight than an ordinary October or November night, and a 26-point win is a useful tiebreaker as well as a morale boost. For Minnesota, though, the tournament was secondary. The real prize on Friday was proof that life without Edwards, for at least one night, can still look like Timberwolves basketball.

Timberwolves Clippers 127-101: How Minnesota Won It

The game was won in three bursts. The first came in the opening period, when the 21-7 run turned an early contest into an 11-point Minnesota lead before the first quarter ended, with McDaniels' driving layup starting it and three-pointers from Lyles and Hyland finishing it. The second came at the end of the first half, when Gobert's putback with 24.6 seconds left stretched the lead to 69-56 and sent Minnesota into the break with momentum and a cushion. The third, and decisive, burst came in the fourth quarter, when Dosunmu's three-pointer started a 23-2 run that turned a 17-point game into a 29-point rout.

Between those bursts, the Clippers had exactly one real opening. Jones's floater with 7:46 left in the third cut the deficit to nine, the smallest it had been since the early going, and for a moment a comeback looked possible. Minnesota answered with a 17-9 run of its own, and the lead was back to 17 by the end of the quarter. Good teams do that: they absorb the other team's best punch and answer before it becomes a run. On Friday, Minnesota did it twice, in the third quarter and again in the fourth, and the second time the game broke open for good.

The paint numbers explain why the bursts kept coming. Outscoring an opponent 62-42 inside is not an accident; it is a sign of a team getting to the rim at will, winning the rebounding battle in the areas that matter, and forcing a defence to collapse and leave shooters open. Ball's seven assists and McDaniels' seven assists tell the same story from the other side: Minnesota's best players were not just scoring, they were creating, and the Clippers' defence never found a way to take both away at once.

Reactions and Quotes

No post-game quotations were included in the Field Level Media report read for this article, so this account sticks to what the numbers and the game flow say rather than inventing a voice for either locker room. What the numbers say is unusually clear. A team that had lost two straight games and its star player beat a team that had lost three straight by 26 points, led by 29, and never trailed by more than three. That is not a lucky night. That is a team executing a plan.

The plan, in outline, is visible in the box score. Ball as the primary creator, with 24 points and seven assists. McDaniels as the two-way second option, with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Hyland as the bench spark, with 19 points. Dosunmu as the steady replacement starter, with 15 and seven rebounds. Gobert as the anchor inside, whose putback just before halftime was the kind of small play that changes the feel of a game. It is a balanced attack, and balanced attacks are how teams survive the loss of a star.

Why It Matters

The win matters for Minnesota for a reason that goes beyond one night in the standings. Two months is a long time in an NBA season, and the Timberwolves will play a large chunk of their schedule without Edwards. If those two months become a slow slide, the season's ambitions slide with them. If, instead, the team can bank wins like this one, with Ball and McDaniels leading and the bench and the replacement starter contributing, then Edwards returns to a team still in the fight rather than a team trying to climb out of a hole.

It matters for the Clippers in the opposite way. Four straight losses, and a defensive performance that gave up 62 paint points and a 29-point deficit, is the kind of night that forces hard conversations. Garland's scoring is not the problem; Los Angeles scored 101 points and had four players in double figures. The problem is at the other end, where Minnesota scored almost at will, and where a nine-point deficit in the third quarter became a 26-point final margin. Teams can survive a cold shooting night. It is much harder to survive a night when the opponent owns the paint.

It also matters as a small reminder of how quickly an NBA season turns. A week ago, the Timberwolves were a team built around Edwards. On Friday, they were a team that won by 26 without him, behind a guard in Ball, a forward in McDaniels, and a bench scorer in Hyland. The season will test whether that can last. Friday proved, at least, that it can happen.

What Happens Next

For Minnesota, the next test is repetition. One win without Edwards is encouraging; a second and a third would be a pattern, and a pattern is what keeps a season alive. Watch Dosunmu's minutes and production as the replacement starter, watch whether Hyland's bench scoring stays at this level, and watch whether the paint dominance travels: 62-42 inside is a number built on energy and physicality as much as talent, and energy is the first thing that fades on a road trip.

For Los Angeles, the next test is defensive. Four straight losses demand a response, and the response has to start inside, where Minnesota did its damage. The Clippers' offence is producing enough to compete. Until their defence stops giving up runs of 21-7, 17-9 and 23-2 in the same game, the losses will keep coming, no matter who scores.

Both teams will also keep an eye on the NBA Cup picture, where a 26-point win is worth more than a narrow one. But the bigger picture, for both, is the regular season: Minnesota trying to stay afloat without its star, and Los Angeles trying to stop a skid before it defines its autumn.
