Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson will each lose one place on the grid for Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix after Formula 1's stewards punished their collision in Friday practice, ruling that both drivers behaved in a manner that was unacceptable. The Verstappen Lawson Mexico penalties were announced on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and they will be applied after qualifying sets the starting order for the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Key Points

• Verstappen of Red Bull and Lawson of Racing Bulls each received a one-place grid penalty for the Mexico City Grand Prix.
• The stewards also gave each driver one penalty point on his super licence after their clash in Friday's second practice session.
• The pair collided between Turns 12 and 14 in the Foro Sol stadium section, bringing out a red flag while debris was cleared.
• Both drivers admitted to the stewards that their moves were unnecessary and clumsy.
• The penalties apply after qualifying, so neither driver knows yet exactly where he will start on Sunday.

What Happened

The incident happened during Friday's second practice session, known as FP2, at the Mexico City circuit. Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, tried to pass Lawson on the inside of Turn 12 as the two cars ran through the stadium section. Lawson, who drives for Red Bull's junior team, Racing Bulls, fought back through the following left-hand corner, forcing Verstappen across the kerb before the Dutchman rejoined alongside him. The two cars then made contact, shedding debris across the track and forcing officials to stop the session with a red flag so marshals could clear the circuit.

Both cars were damaged in the contact. Verstappen's Red Bull suffered damage to its floor, while Lawson's Racing Bulls car damaged its front wing. Both drivers were able to resume running once the session restarted. Verstappen ended the session fifth fastest, while Lawson was ninth. Earlier in the day, both men had sat out the opening practice session while rookies Ayumu Iwasa and Nikola Tsolov drove their respective cars, which made their limited Friday running all the more valuable.

After the session, both drivers were summoned to see the stewards. The stewards' verdict was blunt. They said the drivers of both cars behaved in a manner that was considered unacceptable, particularly in view of a warning that had been given at the team managers' meeting earlier in the day. The stewards added that both drivers admitted the moves were unnecessary and clumsy, and that they were equally to blame for the collision.

Background and Context

The Mexico City Grand Prix is one of the most atmospheric races on the Formula 1 calendar. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez winds through a public park in the Mexican capital, and its Foro Sol stadium section, where thousands of fans pack the grandstands around a slow sequence of corners, regularly produces the weekend's most memorable images. Practice sessions there are usually a chance for teams to fine-tune their cars, not to fight for position, which is part of why Friday's clash drew such a sharp response from the officials.

Verstappen is Red Bull's four-time world champion and the senior figure in the Red Bull family of teams. Lawson drives for Racing Bulls, the junior outfit that has long served as a proving ground for young drivers hoping to earn a seat at the main team. That relationship added an extra edge to the incident: the two men are not rivals from opposing teams, but drivers within the same wider organisation, and Lawson is fighting to secure his own future on the grid. Verstappen made that point himself after the session, describing Lawson's driving as not very smart behaviour from a driver fighting for his seat.

Friday's session was headed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who topped the times ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris. Mercedes driver George Russell and 20-year-old Italian Kimi Antonelli, who is closing in on the title, were also among the frontrunners, with Verstappen fifth and Lawson ninth by the end of FP2. In the drivers' championship, Lawson sits ninth with 77 points, while his Racing Bulls teammate is 11th on 38 points.

Verstappen Lawson Mexico Penalties Explained

The Verstappen Lawson Mexico penalties consist of two parts. First, each driver drops one place from wherever he qualifies for Sunday's race. If Verstappen qualifies fifth, for example, he will start sixth; if Lawson qualifies ninth, he will start tenth. Second, each driver receives one penalty point on his super licence, the licence every Formula 1 driver must hold. Verstappen now has one point on his licence over the past 12 months, while Lawson has four.

The stewards explained why they went beyond a warning. They noted that there had been similar incidents this year involving actions between drivers in free practice, and they decided to escalate the penalty from a formal warning to a grid position penalty, particularly in view of the warning given at the team managers' meeting and consistent with other incidents involving contact between cars in free practice in previous years. In other words, the officials had told teams earlier in the day to keep practice clean, and both drivers ignored that message.

One-place penalties may sound small, but at a circuit like Mexico City they can matter. The long run from the start line to the first corner rewards a good launch, and losing a place can mean starting on the dirtier side of the track or behind a slower car into the opening corners. With qualifying still to come, both teams will now be working to give their drivers as much margin as possible, knowing that one place will be taken away afterwards.

Reactions and Quotes

Verstappen did not hide his frustration after the session. He said Lawson caused the trouble near Turn 12 and described his fellow Red Bull family driver as not very smart, adding that he thought it was just not very smart behaviour when you are fighting for your seat. The comment underlined how seriously Verstappen took an incident that happened in practice, when no championship points were at stake.

Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane described the clash as avoidable and unnecessary, noting that the drivers were focused on achieving a fast final sector to prepare their tyres for qualifying. The stewards' own words were the most damning of all: they called the behaviour of both drivers unacceptable and recorded that both men admitted their moves were unnecessary and clumsy.

The reaction from fans and pundits has focused on the unusual nature of the clash. Teammates and sister-team drivers do occasionally come together on track, but a wheel-to-wheel fight through a stadium section during a practice session, with a red flag as the result, is rare. The fact that both drivers were punished equally has also been noted: the stewards did not single out one man as the aggressor, but held both responsible for a confrontation that neither needed to have.

Why It Matters

The penalties matter for three reasons. First, they change the shape of Sunday's grid. Neither Verstappen nor Lawson can now simply qualify and start where they finish on Saturday; each must out-qualify the car ahead by enough to absorb the drop. Second, they send a message to the whole paddock. The stewards have made clear that practice sessions are not a free-for-all and that warnings given in team managers' meetings will be enforced, even when the drivers involved are from the same organisation.

Third, the incident adds tension to a race weekend that already carries championship weight. With Antonelli closing in on the title and Norris among the pacesetters in practice, every position on the grid counts. A midfield battle that starts one place further back can decide whether a driver scores points or leaves Mexico City empty-handed, and for Lawson in particular, a clean weekend matters as he fights for his seat.

What Happens Next

Qualifying takes place on Saturday and will set the provisional grid for Sunday's race. Once qualifying is complete, the one-place penalties will be applied to Verstappen and Lawson, and the final starting order will be confirmed. Both teams will then finalise their race strategies, including tyre choices and pit-stop plans, around their new starting positions.

Sunday's race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will show whether either driver can recover the lost place quickly. The long straight to Turn 1 offers overtaking chances, but the stadium section that caused Friday's trouble is narrow and unforgiving. Both men will be hoping that Saturday's qualifying, rather than Friday's practice clash, is what fans remember from their Mexico City weekend.
