Dartmouth stunned No. 13/16 Harvard 24-14 on Friday night in Hanover, New Hampshire, handing the Crimson their first loss of the season and seizing control of the Ivy League race in a game defined by turnovers, a relentless ground attack and a defensive performance that refused to let Harvard back in. The Dartmouth Harvard football upset was complete well before the final whistle: Harvard never led, sophomore quarterback Charlie Smith threw five interceptions, and Dartmouth closed the game with a long, clock-eating drive that left no room for a comeback.

What Happened

Dartmouth struck first and never gave the lead back. After Harvard's defence forced a punt on the opening drive, Dartmouth started at Harvard's 18-yard line following a leaping interception by senior defensive back Cameron Best-Alston on the first play from scrimmage, when he jumped a pass intended for freshman receiver Nate Bailey. The Big Green ran the ball six times in a row, and Saunier rushed left into the end zone from the two-yard line to put Dartmouth on the board less than six minutes into the game.

Harvard's next drive ended in another turnover. Facing third-and-goal from the four-yard line, Smith threw a pass short of the goal line to sophomore receiver Tafari Moe, but Moe bobbled the ball into the hands of sophomore linebacker Matthew Boydell, who returned it to the Dartmouth 39-yard line. Dartmouth marched down the field, and junior running back Dylan Elder received a shovel pass and fell forward across the goal line on fourth-and-goal to extend the lead to 14-0 with eleven minutes left in the first half.

Harvard finally answered before halftime, but only after more drama. Benson intercepted Saunier and returned the ball five yards to the Dartmouth 35-yard line, and Smith found Bailey on a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7. Dartmouth responded with an 11-play drive, more than half of it Saunier runs, to restore a 21-7 lead with 1:47 left in the half. Harvard's two-minute drill then hummed downfield, with sophomore wide receiver Ryan Tattersall making a highlight-reel toe-drag catch on the left sideline and then a superb over-the-shoulder grab through pass interference for a 38-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-14 at halftime despite what the Harvard Crimson described as a disastrous first 30 minutes.

The second half followed the same pattern: Harvard chances, Dartmouth answers, and Harvard mistakes at the worst moments. Just five plays into the second half, a Smith pass over the middle was tipped into the air and intercepted by Best-Alston, setting Dartmouth up at Harvard's 48-yard line. Benson quickly snatched possession back, intercepting Saunier at the two-yard line for his record-tying eighth interception of the season. Harvard drove 83 yards, but junior kicker Kieran Corr pulled a 32-yard field goal left, breaking a seven-make streak and keeping the deficit at seven with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Benson then broke the record. When Saunier finally looked to the air on Dartmouth's next drive, his short pass was tipped and intercepted by Benson, giving the sophomore his program-record-breaking ninth interception of the season. Harvard reached the red zone again, but on fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line, head coach Andrew Aurich elected to go for it, and Smith's lob pass to the right side of the end zone was intercepted by Dartmouth junior defensive back No'Koi Maddox, forcing yet another Harvard red-zone failure. Harvard forced a quick three-and-out and got the ball back at Dartmouth's 38-yard line, but back-to-back runs by freshman quarterback Kise Flannery were stuffed on third and fourth down.

Dartmouth then put the game away the way it had played all night: on the ground. The Big Green marched down the field, rushing the ball 14 consecutive times for 53 yards, and kicked a short field goal to extend the lead to 24-14 with about four minutes to play. Smith's fifth interception came two plays into Harvard's last-ditch drive, on a pass over the middle thrown well behind sophomore tight end Teigan Pelletier, and Dartmouth kept the ball on the ground to burn the remaining time.

Background and Context

The result flips the Ivy League race. Six days earlier, Harvard had claimed the top spot in the Ivy League with a victory against Princeton. That win is now undone: Dartmouth moves into the conference lead, and because the Big Green beat Harvard head-to-head, Dartmouth holds the tiebreaker if the teams tie with one loss at the end of the season. Harvard, in the Crimson's words, no longer controls its own destiny in the Ancient Eight.

Harvard's record tells the story of the night. The Crimson went one-for-four on red-zone opportunities and one-for-nine on third downs, and turned the ball over on downs twice. Even with those failures, Harvard stayed within one score for most of the game because its defence, led by Benson, kept producing turnovers of its own. Benson had already recorded three interceptions in a game once this season; doing it again against Dartmouth made him the first player in program history with multiple three-interception games, and his ninth interception of the season broke a single-season record that had stood since 1947.

Dartmouth's win came without one of its stars. Star sophomore running back Myles Craddock was sidelined with injury, yet the Big Green still recorded 229 rushing yards and 4.1 yards per carry, with three different players recording 13 or more attempts. Saunier's 20 carries for 109 yards were a career-best rushing day, and his 13 first-half rushes alone were more than he had recorded in a full game this season. That ground game did more than move the chains: it shortened the game, kept Harvard's offence off the field, and set up the closing drive that sealed the upset.

Harvard's other bright spots could not overcome the turnovers. Tattersall caught six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, including the two highlight plays in the second quarter. Bailey tallied six receptions, bringing his season total to 53, which is tied for ninth all-time in a single season at Harvard. Junior running back DJ Gordon had 14 rushes for 77 yards in his second game back from an injury that held him out for the first half of the season, and captain Xaviah Bascon added 49 rushing yards on seven carries. Smith, who entered the game with just four interceptions this season, finished 23-for-37 for 277 yards and two touchdowns alongside his five picks.

Dartmouth Harvard Football Upset Explained

The Dartmouth Harvard football upset was not a fluke of one play, but a accumulation of small failures that Harvard could not survive against a disciplined opponent. Harvard's first-half drives ended in interceptions on the first play from scrimmage, on a bobbled pass at the goal line, and in a punt that sailed only 10 yards after a shanked kick by sophomore punter Brian Checkley. In the second half, a missed chip-shot field goal, a failed fourth-and-goal, and a failed fourth-down run at Dartmouth's 38-yard line all came while Harvard trailed by only seven points. Each time Harvard had a chance to tie or take the lead, Dartmouth's defence, or Harvard's own execution, stopped it.

Dartmouth, by contrast, executed in the critical situations that Harvard did not. The Big Green converted fourth-and-goal for a touchdown in the first half, milked the clock with an 11-play drive before halftime, and then, with the game on the line, ran the ball 14 consecutive times for 53 yards to set up the field goal that made it a two-score game. "In those critical situations, Dartmouth did a really good job of executing, and we didn't," Aurich said. "We were in positions to continue drives, and you know, we didn't make the play. We had a breakdown here, a breakdown there. If you wanna be a championship team, you gotta make those plays in those critical situations, and we didn't."

That contrast is also why the result matters beyond one Friday night. In the Ivy League, where there is no conference championship game, the head-to-head result is the tiebreaker that decides the title when teams finish tied. Dartmouth now owns that tiebreaker over Harvard, and Harvard must now win out and hope Dartmouth slips up elsewhere. The Crimson's extra day of rest before their next game will help, but it does not restore the control they lost in Hanover.

Reactions and Quotes

Aurich took responsibility for the performance in his post-game comments. "Ultimately, when games like this happen, where you don't execute at the level you need to, and you don't come ready to play at the level that you need to execute, that falls on me as a head coach," he said. "It's my job to make sure they come out here ready to play, and if they aren't, there's only one person to look at, and that's right in the mirror."

He praised Benson's historic night, while lamenting that it was wasted. "It was a great job," Aurich said. "The defense did an unbelievable job in general in the second half, keeping us close enough that we can try to get back in it. It's too bad that we had to waste [Benson's] effort in a game like this."

On Smith's five interceptions, Aurich was measured. "I gotta watch the tape to see what happened on each one," he said. "Some of them weren't necessarily bad decisions - they were tip balls that were freakishly tipped up and ended up in their hands." He added: "I know Charlie; he's going to bounce back. He's not going to let this get in his head or anything like that. And I'm really confident in his ability, and I know he'll be better because of this, regardless of how ugly of a game it was for him."

Looking ahead, Aurich struck a forward-looking note. "There's still growth that needs to happen on offense, and it was evident today," he said. "But I know these guys will come ready to work, so we can continue to make improvements and grow so we can take advantage of these last couple of games."

Why It Matters

The upset matters for three reasons. First, it decides, for now, the Ivy League title race: Dartmouth leads, Harvard chases, and the tiebreaker belongs to the Big Green. Second, it is a historic individual night wrapped inside a team loss: Benson's nine interceptions break a record that survived since 1947, and his second three-interception game of the season is a program first. Third, it is a reminder of how quickly a perfect season can unravel in college football. Harvard entered the game 6-0, ranked No. 13/16, and fresh from taking the Ivy League lead against Princeton. One Friday night, five interceptions, and a ground game they could not stop later, that season has its first loss and its title hopes are no longer in its own hands.

For Dartmouth, the win is a statement about depth. Losing Craddock, its star running back, would have been an excuse for a lesser performance. Instead, three backs carried the load, Saunier ran for a career best, and the defence produced five interceptions of its own, including the first-play pick that set the tone. That is how an unranked team beats a ranked rival: not with one spectacular play, but with a full game of better execution.

What Happens Next

Harvard will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday when it takes on Columbia in its final matchup of the season at Harvard Stadium, where the Crimson will celebrate their graduating class on Senior Day, with kickoff at 1 p.m. A win there keeps Harvard's hopes alive, but the Crimson now need help from elsewhere to reclaim the Ivy League lead they held for six days.

Dartmouth, meanwhile, will try to protect the lead it just seized. With the head-to-head tiebreaker over Harvard in hand, the Big Green's task is simpler: keep winning, and the Ivy League title is theirs. The final weeks of the Ancient Eight season, which looked like a Harvard procession a week ago, are now a genuine race.
