The Columbus Crew did their part on Saturday, October 31, 2026, beating D.C. United 3-0 at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, to keep their MLS playoff hopes alive into the final day of the regular season. The Columbus Crew D.C. United 3-0 result means the Crew can clinch a postseason place on Sunday, November 1, if Toronto FC and Red Bull New York both lose or draw in their 4 p.m. ET kickoffs.

First-half goals by Sean Zawadzki and Anass Zaroury gave the Crew (13-15-5) a 2-0 lead at the break, and the lead widened to 3-0 in the 61st minute when D.C. United's Kimoto Nono scored into his own net under pressure from Santiago Rodriguez. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte earned his eighth shutout of the season with four saves, including a first-half penalty drama in which D.C. United left back Keisuke Kurokawa fired wide of the right post.

What Happened

The Crew took control in the first half. Zawadzki opened the scoring when midfielder Dylan Chambost lobbed a free kick into the box and Zawadzki met it with a header to make it 1-0. Zaroury then doubled the lead in the 41st minute with the goal of the game: settling a cross-field pass from Chambost, he wasted no time, sent the shot between two defenders and bent it into the top right corner from about 15 yards out inside the top left corner of the box. D.C. United goalkeeper Alex Bono threw his hands up in frustration, helpless to stop it.

D.C. United had a chance to get back into the game in the 24th minute, when they were awarded a penalty. The drama began when Crew defender Sekou Bangoura was called for a penalty after being struck in the head with the ball inside the box. Schulte held on to the ball and refused to hand it to the D.C. United players, finally giving it to referee Elijio Arreguin for placement at the spot. Schulte then stretched his long arms above his head and to his sides while saying something toward Kurokawa before the kick — and the left back's attempt rolled weakly wide of the right post.

The second half brought the third goal. In the 61st minute, Rodriguez pressured Nono inside the D.C. United defence, and Nono turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-0. From there, the Crew managed the game to its conclusion, and Schulte completed his eighth clean sheet of the season on four saves.

Background and Context

The win completed a remarkable late-season climb for a team that occupied last place in the Eastern Conference on September 1. At that point, a playoff place looked like a far-fetched possibility, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Two months later, the Crew have given themselves a chance on the final day — and they have done it with form at home, where Chambost has now produced multiple assists in two straight games.

Chambost was the man of the match on Saturday. He set up three goals in the Crew's 4-2 victory over Toronto on October 24, and he added two more assists against D.C. United, lobbing the free kick for Zawadzki's opener and sending the cross-field pass for Zaroury's strike. That creative run has been central to the Crew's late surge.

The Eastern Conference picture is tight at the cut line. The Crew's fate is no longer in their own hands — they have played their final regular-season game — but the mathematics are simple: losses or draws by Toronto FC and Red Bull New York in Sunday's 4 p.m. ET kickoffs will punch the Crew's postseason ticket. Any win by either side would change the equation, and the Crew will be watching both games on Sunday afternoon.

Columbus Crew D.C. United 3-0: The Playoff Equation

The equation is unusual in that it depends on two results, not one. A single favourable result is not enough: both Toronto and New York must drop points. That is because the Crew sit below both teams in the standings, and only if both fail to win will the Crew's 13 wins and 44 points be enough to hold a playoff place.

The timing adds to the drama. Both decisive games kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 1, so Crew supporters will be able to follow both score lines at once, with the picture changing in real time. A goal in either game could swing the Crew's season between a playoff trip and an early winter.

For D.C. United, the defeat ended a disappointing season in a game that summed up their year: a missed penalty, an own goal, and a first half in which they conceded twice despite having a chance to score first. For Columbus, the clean sheet and the three goals were the latest evidence of a team that has found form at exactly the right moment — even if that form may still not be quite enough.

Reactions and Quotes

The Dispatch's match report singled out the goal of the game and the save — or, as it put it, the psyche-out — of the game. Zaroury's strike, it noted, came "off his right foot and inside the right post from about 15 yards out," after he "wasted no time taking the shot after controlling the ball." Of Schulte's penalty drama, it wrote that it "wasn't so much as a save as a psyche out," with the goalkeeper stretching his arms and talking to Kurokawa before the kick, which "rolled weakly outside the post."

Chambost's contribution drew the same praise. The report noted that it was "the second straight home game that Chambost has finished with multiple assists," after he "set up three goals Oct. 24 in the Crew's 4-2 victory over Toronto." That run of creativity, more than any single goal, has defined the Crew's revival.

No Crew player or coach was quoted in the initial match report, and the club had not issued a separate statement on the playoff equation at the time of writing. The focus, for now, is on Sunday's scoreboard — and on two games in which the Crew will be the most interested spectators in the league.

Why It Matters

The result matters because it keeps alive a playoff race that looked dead two months ago. A team that was last in the Eastern Conference on September 1 is now one Sunday away from the postseason, and that turnaround is a story in itself, whatever happens on Sunday. It also matters for the league's final-day drama: the Eastern Conference's last playoff places will now be decided by simultaneous 4 p.m. kickoffs, with Columbus waiting on results elsewhere.

It matters, too, for the players who produced it. Zawadzki's header, Zaroury's bending strike and Schulte's eighth shutout are the kind of contributions that define a season's final weeks, and Chambost's run of five assists in two home games has made him the creative centre of the side at the moment it matters most.

For D.C. United, the game is a reminder of a season to forget. A missed penalty, an own goal and a 3-0 defeat on the road are a fitting, if painful, end to a campaign that never found momentum, and the club will now turn to the off-season with questions about its defence and its attack.

What Happens Next

On Sunday, November 1, Toronto FC and Red Bull New York both play at 4 p.m. ET. If both lose or draw, Columbus clinches a playoff spot and will learn its first-round opponent and schedule in the days that follow. If either side wins, the Crew's season ends on Saturday's 3-0 win — a strong finish, but not quite enough.

Crew supporters will therefore spend Sunday afternoon as scoreboard watchers, following two games they cannot influence. It is an unusual position for a team that has just won 3-0, but it is the position the Crew's September form left them in — and it is a far better position than the one they were in two months ago.
