Canelo Alvarez is a world champion again. The Mexican superstar beat Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, October 31, 2026, to reclaim the WBC super middleweight title, 13 months after losing his undisputed crown to Terence Crawford. The judges scored the 12-round fight 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110, all for Alvarez, who handed Mbilli the first defeat of his professional career.

Mbilli, who arrived unbeaten at 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts, had moments of success early, but the middle and late rounds belonged firmly to the 36-year-old veteran. Alvarez, fighting for the first time since the Crawford defeat, kept a tight defence, landed accurately without throwing a huge volume of punches, and did the professional job he has done in victory for years: he simply won the fight, without much for the highlight reel, and without ever looking in real danger.

What Happened

Mbilli started fast, firing his jab and moving forward, and took the opening round on several cards, with Alvarez yet to find his range. But the pattern of the fight soon settled: Alvarez's tight guard absorbed Mbilli's volume, and his counter-punching grew sharper as the rounds wore on. By the middle rounds, the veteran was landing the cleaner, heavier work, and Mbilli, known for his relentless pressure, could not press forward with his usual ferocity.

The strangest sequence of the fight came in the eighth round. After a warning, Mbilli was deducted a point for a shot to the back of Alvarez's head. Alvarez had shouted to the referee that it had happened three times, and the referee then took the point, a decision that widened an already growing gap on the cards. From rounds nine to 12, Alvarez was, in the words of one ringside report, "on cruise control". Mbilli landed what may have been his best right hand in the final round but did not follow it up, and Alvarez ended the fight wanting to exchange, with Mbilli obliging too late to change the outcome.

On the undercard, Jaime Munguia retained the WBA super middleweight title with a unanimous-decision win over Nikita Zon, scored 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112, after Zon had hurt Munguia in round six. The main card was shown on DAZN pay-per-view from the ANB Arena in Riyadh, with main-event ring walks at about 4:30 p.m. ET.

Background and Context

Alvarez entered the fight as the challenger, despite his star power commanding the final ring walk, and despite Mbilli holding the WBC belt. Thirteen months earlier, in September 2025, Alvarez had lost his undisputed super middleweight crown to Crawford, a defeat that raised the familiar question of whether the great Mexican, now 36, still had a championship run left in him. Saturday's answer was clear: he is still a top-level fighter, even if he is no longer the fighter of his prime, and it still takes a sincere, elite-level opponent to beat him.

Mbilli, the French-based Cameroonian-born puncher, had built his unbeaten record on pressure, volume and power, with 24 knockouts in his 29 wins. This was his first title defence as WBC champion, and his first fight at this level of attention. He showed early that he belonged — his jab troubled Alvarez in the opening rounds, and he hung in there while the fight was still a contest — but he could not sustain it against Alvarez's defence, timing and experience over 12 rounds.

Canelo Mbilli: A Professional, Controlled Win

The scorecards — 115-112, 116-111, 117-110 — tell a story of a clear but not one-sided win. Independent ringside scoring agreed, with Bad Left Hook scoring it 116-111 twice for Alvarez. There were no knockdowns, and Alvarez never seemed in any real danger, a point stressed by every ringside report. That, in a sense, is the signature of this stage of Alvarez's career: fewer fireworks, more control, a tight defence, accurate punches thrown in measured bursts, and a fight managed from the front once he had taken charge.

It was also a reminder of Alvarez's remarkable longevity. His record now stands at 64-3-2 with 39 knockouts, and he has now won a world title in a new chapter of a career that has already spanned four weight divisions. Mbilli drops to 29-1-1 with 24 knockouts, and while the defeat is a setback, it came against one of the defining fighters of his generation, in a fight he was competitive in early before Alvarez's class told.

Reactions and Quotes

When asked about his future after the fight, Alvarez said he would rest and then return, as is normal, and named no potential opponents. That has not stopped the speculation. Hamzah Sheeraz is reported to be the promotional house favourite to land the next Alvarez bout, while WBC interim champion Lester Martinez, who was in attendance in Riyadh on Saturday, will also hope to make his case. As one report put it, anyone who can make a weight Alvarez can fight at will want the fight, because he remains the top money man in boxing's non-heavyweight divisions — and he has thrown curveballs over his choice of opponent before.

Mbilli's camp can point to a first defeat that was competitive early and decided by experience rather than domination, but the point deduction in round eight and the one-sided late rounds will sting. For Alvarez, the emotion was visible as he reclaimed a belt he had lost to Crawford: a champion again, on Halloween night in Riyadh, in front of a crowd that had come to see whether the old king still had it. He showed that he does.

Why It Matters

Alvarez's win reorders the super middleweight division. The WBC belt is back with the sport's biggest non-heavyweight draw, which means the next fight at 168 pounds will be one of the biggest available in boxing, whether it is Sheeraz, Martinez or a surprise name. It also extends one of the great careers of the modern era: 13 months after a defeat that might have ended a lesser fighter's championship ambitions, Alvarez is a world champion again, and the division must once again go through him.

For Mbilli, the defeat is a hard lesson in the difference between beating contenders and beating a great. He arrived unbeaten, he started well, and he left with his first loss and a clear picture of what the top level demands over 12 rounds. How he responds — whether he rebuilds toward another title shot or fades — will define the next phase of his career.

What Happens Next

Alvarez will take time off, as he said, before naming his next opponent. Sheeraz and Martinez are the leading names in the frame, and both were in Riyadh to watch. The WBC picture will clarify in the coming weeks, and Alvarez's team will weigh a voluntary defence, a unification, or another big-name fight. Mbilli, meanwhile, will need a rebuilding win before another title opportunity comes, but at 29-1-1 he remains a dangerous, high-volume contender in a division now ruled again by Canelo Alvarez.
