LaNorris Sellers turned a hostile road trip into a personal showcase on Saturday, accounting for five touchdowns as South Carolina dismantled Oklahoma 42-25 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. The Gamecocks scored on six of their red-zone trips, piled up 521 yards of total offense and won their third game in a row, continuing one of the sharpest turnarounds of the college football season.

Sellers finished 19 of 24 passing for 301 yards and three touchdowns, a season high through the air, and ran for 96 yards and two more scores. It was his second straight game accounting for five total touchdowns, and it came against an Oklahoma defense that had entered the day among the most respected units in the country. South Carolina led 28-10 at halftime, 35-10 after three quarters and never let the Sooners back into the game until the outcome was already decided.

What Happened

South Carolina opened the scoring on its third drive of the game, running the ball on five of eight plays before Sellers capped the march with a 15-yard touchdown run. Oklahoma answered early in the second quarter when linebacker Kip Lewis intercepted Sellers and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown, the third pick-six of Lewis's career, tying the game at 7-7. It was the last time the Sooners were truly in the contest.

From there, Sellers and the Gamecocks took complete control. A 75-yard drive capped by a short touchdown run from Christian Clark put South Carolina back in front, and Sellers then found DJ Black for an 84-yard touchdown pass on third-and-12 to stretch the lead to 21-7. Another first-half scoring drive, finished by a touchdown reception from Nyck Harbor, sent the Gamecocks into halftime ahead 28-10. South Carolina had outgained Oklahoma 307-71 in the first half, and the Sooners' offense had managed almost nothing against a defense that was swarming to the ball.

The second half followed the same pattern. Sellers added another rushing touchdown in the third quarter to make it 35-10, and the Gamecocks kept the pressure on with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Mazeo Bennett Jr. early in the fourth quarter, extending the margin to 42-16. Bennett finished with four catches for 107 yards and the score, and Sellers finished with 397 total yards. Oklahoma scored twice late through quarterback John Mateer, who threw two touchdown passes to Ivan Carreon in the fourth quarter, but the rally only trimmed the final margin to 42-25. Carreon led the Sooners with five catches for 88 yards and his first two career touchdowns.

The numbers told the story of domination. Oklahoma gained 241 of its 359 yards in the fourth quarter, after the game was out of reach. Before that, the Sooners had been held to 118 yards through three quarters by a South Carolina defense that had entered the season with questions and is now playing with growing confidence. South Carolina converted 9 of 14 attempts on third and fourth down and never punted the momentum away once it seized control.

Background/Context

Only a few weeks ago, this South Carolina season looked very different. Kentucky stole a win in Columbia and pushed the Gamecocks' losing streak to three games, and it had been more than a year since South Carolina had won a Power Four or SEC game. Head coach Shane Beamer's job security appeared to be on thin ice, and the schedule ahead offered little comfort.

Then the turn began. South Carolina went on the road and beat a top-15 Florida team, came out of a bye week and beat another top-15 team in Tennessee, and now has dismantled Oklahoma in Norman. The Gamecocks have outscored the Sooners 77-34 in their two games at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, following a 35-9 win there two years ago. For Oklahoma, the loss continued a frustrating slide: the Sooners fell to 4-4, and home fans began heading for the exits early on Saturday, with chants directed at the offense heard in the stands.

Sellers entered the season as a preseason Heisman Trophy contender, and October has been the best month of football he has ever played, according to Saturday Down South. He has now accounted for five touchdowns in back-to-back games, and his season-high 301 passing yards against Oklahoma came with two interceptions that were the only real blemishes on an otherwise commanding performance. His ability to hurt defenses with his legs remains what scares opposing coaching staffs most: he led the Gamecocks in rushing on Saturday while also throwing touchdown passes of 84 and 79 yards, both longer than any passing play Oklahoma's defense had allowed all season.

South Carolina Oklahoma: Sellers' Breakout Month Changes the Season

The South Carolina-Oklahoma result matters because it confirms that the Gamecocks' turnaround is real rather than a brief hot streak. Beating Florida and Tennessee could have been explained away as isolated upsets. Doing the same thing to Oklahoma, on the road, in a game South Carolina controlled from the second quarter onward, is a statement about where this team now stands.

The offensive improvement under coordinator Kendal Briles has been steady and visible. South Carolina scored touchdowns on five of eight drives during one stretch of Saturday's game, mixed the run and pass effectively and finished 6 of 6 in the red zone. The defense, meanwhile, has gained confidence week over week. In the first half against Oklahoma, the Sooners ran six offensive drives: four ended in punts, one ended in a field goal and one ended the half. That is the profile of a defense playing fast and together, not one simply riding a hot quarterback.

For Oklahoma, the questions are harder. The Sooners' defense had not allowed more than 382 yards in any game this season before Saturday, and South Carolina rolled up 521. The offense, meanwhile, could not stay on the field early, leaving the defense to defend short fields and long drives. Head coach Brent Venables built his reputation on defense, and the 521 yards allowed were nearly the most against one of his defenses since his first year in 2022.

Reactions/Quotes

The reaction around the game reflected how one-sided it had become. Sports Illustrated's South Carolina site described the Gamecocks as one of the hottest teams in the conference, noting that the offense keeps getting better under Briles while the defense gains confidence week over week. Its analysis also pointed to the road ahead, with Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia and Clemson still to come, as the next test of whether this run can continue.

In Norman, the mood was very different. News9 reported frustrated fans heading for the exits early and calls for changes growing louder at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, while its stock report noted that the Sooners followed a familiar path to a home blowout at the hands of South Carolina for the second time in three years. Oklahoma's players and coaches now face a week of hard questions about an offense that managed only 118 yards through three quarters and a defense that could not contain Sellers either on the ground or through the air.

Nationally, the performance strengthened Sellers' case as one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. He outgained Oklahoma's entire offense by himself in total yardage for long stretches of the game, finishing with 397 total yards to the Sooners' 359 as a team, and his two long touchdown passes showed a vertical passing game that had been missing earlier in the season.

Why It Matters

This game matters for the SEC race and for the College Football Playoff picture, even if South Carolina still faces a difficult road. At 5-3, the Gamecocks kept alive an outside shot at the playoff, but they will have to earn it: Texas A&M, a trip to Arkansas, Georgia and Clemson remain on the schedule. What Saturday proved is that South Carolina can beat good teams away from home, and that its quarterback can carry an offense against an elite defense.

For Oklahoma, the loss matters just as much. At 4-4, the Sooners are now fighting for bowl positioning rather than conference contention, and the frustration visible in the stands reflects a fan base that expected more from a team that started the season with high hopes. The Sooners' remaining games will determine whether this season is remembered as a rebuilding year or something worse.

More broadly, the game is a reminder of how quickly college football fortunes can change in a single month. South Carolina went from a three-game losing streak and doubts about its coach to three straight wins over ranked-style opposition, all because its quarterback found his rhythm and its defense found its confidence at the same time.

What Happens Next

South Carolina returns home with momentum and a daunting closing stretch. The Gamecocks still must play Texas A&M, travel to Arkansas, face Georgia and finish against Clemson. If Sellers continues to play at his October level, South Carolina will be a difficult opponent for every one of those teams, and the Gamecocks' outside playoff hopes will stay alive into November.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, must regroup quickly. The Sooners need to fix an offense that disappeared for three quarters and a defense that gave up explosive plays of 84 and 79 yards after not allowing a passing play longer than 54 yards all season. How Venables and his staff respond this week will shape the rest of Oklahoma's season.

The result also sets up an intriguing comparison for the rest of the SEC: South Carolina has now beaten three straight quality opponents, and the conference's other contenders will be watching closely to see whether the Gamecocks can sustain this level against the heavyweights left on their schedule.
