UFC Vegas 123 ended in controversy and a changing of the guard at lightweight on Saturday night, as Tom Nolan stopped Renato Moicano by third-round TKO in the main event at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Nolan, the 26-year-old Australian, finished the fight with ground-and-pound punches and elbows at 1:28 of round three, but the result will be debated for as long as it is celebrated, because a disputed referee stand-up in the second round took Moicano out of the dominant position that had controlled the fight.

The Tom Nolan Moicano result extends Nolan's winning streak to six fights, ties him for the longest active winning streak in the UFC lightweight division, and announces a new contender in one of the sport's deepest weight classes. For Moicano, the 37-year-old Brazilian veteran, it is a second defeat in three fights — and one he handled with a grace that stood in sharp contrast to the anger felt by many watching at home.

Key Points

• Tom Nolan defeated Renato Moicano by TKO (ground and pound) at 1:28 of round three in the UFC Vegas 123 main event on October 31, 2026.
• Referee Dan Miragliotta stood the fighters up in round two while Moicano held back control with a body triangle, a call widely criticised afterwards.
• Nolan, 26, improves to 12-1 as a professional and 6-1 in the UFC, with six straight wins in his first UFC main event.
• Moicano, 37, falls to 21-8-1; he had controlled much of the first two rounds with grappling before the stand-up changed the fight.
• In the co-main event, Jacobe Smith beat Randy Brown by unanimous decision; Julian Erosa knocked out JeongYeong Lee in round one of his retirement fight.

What Happened

Moicano fought the opening rounds to a clear plan and executed it well. The Brazilian repeatedly took Nolan down, took his back, locked in a body triangle and hunted for the rear-naked choke that has produced so many of his victories. Nolan defended the hands well even when dragged back to the canvas, but he spent long stretches of the first two rounds surviving rather than attacking, and the scorecards were heading Moicano's way.

The turning point came midway through the second round. With Moicano again holding back mount, a body triangle and an arm around Nolan's neck, referee Dan Miragliotta ordered the fighters back to their feet for inactivity — a decision that drew loud boos inside the APEX and disbelief from commentators and fighters watching around the world. Almost immediately, Nolan hurt Moicano with a knee and nearly finished him with strikes before the horn, stealing a round he had been losing and leaving the Brazilian badly hurt going into the third.

The third round confirmed the shift. Nolan came out fast with kicks and knees to the body and head, and although Moicano secured another takedown, he looked tired and this time could not hold the position. Nolan reversed into top position and unleashed heavy ground strikes — punches and elbows — until Miragliotta stepped in to stop the contest at 1:28 of the round. Nolan had won his first UFC main event, and the manner of it guaranteed the debate that followed.

Background and Context

Nolan entered the fight ranked No. 14 among UFC lightweights, one spot below the No. 12-ranked Moicano, and his rise has been rapid since a debut defeat to Nikolas Motta in 2023. Six straight wins later, including a unanimous decision over Fares Ziam in June, the Australian is now tied with Arman Tsarukyan and Quillan Salkilld for the longest active winning streak in the division. Saturday's win came a week after fellow Australian Alexander Volkanovski retained the featherweight title at UFC 333, extending a fine run for Australian fighters at the top of the sport.

Moicano's story is a different one. The Brazilian challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title last year and came into Saturday's fight off a second-round finish of Chris Duncan at UFC Vegas 115. He has said he plans to fight out his UFC contract and then test free agency, which gives every fight at this stage of his career added significance: at 37, each outing is a negotiation with time as much as with an opponent. A win over a rising contender like Nolan would have strengthened his hand considerably; instead, he leaves Las Vegas with a defeat shaped by a referee's intervention.

The stand-up itself has been described by some observers as one of the worst in UFC history, a verdict that reflects how clear Moicano's control was: back mount, body triangle, an arm around the neck, and active attempts to advance. Referees stand fighters up for genuine inactivity, but Moicano was working, and the crowd's reaction inside the APEX told its own story. Whether Nolan would have won the third round anyway is unknowable — and that is precisely why the call matters so much.

UFC Vegas 123: How Nolan Turned the Fight Around

Credit for the finish belongs to Nolan regardless of the controversy. Plenty of fighters given a reprieve fail to take it; Nolan took his within seconds, landing the knee that dropped Moicano and nearly ending the fight in the second round, then finishing the job properly in the third. His reversal from the takedown in the final round, turning a defensive position into top control and a stoppage, was the work of a fighter growing in confidence by the minute.

Nolan's defence also deserves its share of the story. Moicano reached the positions that have finished many opponents — back control, body triangle, choke attempts — and Nolan defended the hands, stayed calm and survived. That defensive work kept him in a fight he was losing, and when the stand-up arrived, he was still dangerous enough to exploit it. The finish, when it came, was emphatic: ground strikes from top position until the referee had seen enough.

None of that erases the question hanging over the result. Had the second round ended with Moicano still on Nolan's back, the Brazilian would have entered the third round ahead and in control; instead he entered it hurt, after absorbing the strikes that followed the stand-up. The sport has seen controversial stoppages and questionable scorecards before, but a referee removing a dominant grappling position mid-round is rarer, and it is why this main event will be discussed well beyond the usual post-fight cycle.

Reactions and Quotes

Moicano himself refused to blame the referee in his first public response. Posting on X after the fight, he congratulated his opponent — "Congrats tom Nolan you're a beast!" — and then offered a frank self-assessment: "I had a terrible performance. I was well trained." He added that he had managed takedowns and taken Nolan's back but could not inflict damage because the Australian defended well. Neither message addressed Miragliotta's stand-up directly, a restraint that won him praise even from those furious on his behalf.

Elsewhere, the reaction was far less restrained. Fighters and analysts described the stand-up as a massive assist for Nolan, with one prominent voice arguing that Miragliotta had "totally hosed" Moicano by choosing to restart the fight standing. The consensus among critics was not that Nolan did anything wrong — he fought the fight in front of him — but that the referee's decision changed a fight Moicano was winning into one he lost. The UFC has not announced any review of the officiating.

Why It Matters

For the lightweight division, the result matters because it creates a new name in the contender picture. Six straight wins, a main-event finish and a share of the division's longest active streak put Nolan in conversations he was not part of a year ago. The division's title picture is crowded, but contenders are made by nights like Saturday's, and Nolan now has the signature win his record needed — even if its signature carries an asterisk in many minds.

For officiating, the fight matters as another case study in one of MMA's hardest jobs. Referees must balance action with safety in real time, and stand-ups exist for a reason. But when a fighter holds back control with a body triangle and is actively working for a finish, a stand-up does not merely restart the action — it redistributes advantage. The debate after UFC Vegas 123 will feed into how referees are briefed and assessed, and that is a useful outcome even for those who believe the call itself cannot be undone.

For Moicano, the defeat matters because of timing. At 37, with a contract to fight out and free agency to consider, a win would have been leverage; a controversial loss is something else entirely. His gracious response may yet serve him well, but the record books will show a third-round TKO defeat, and record books rarely carry footnotes.

What Happens Next

Nolan's next fight is at the UFC's discretion, but the logic of the division points upward: a ranked opponent in the top ten, and a step closer to a title eliminator if he keeps winning. Six straight victories earn that kind of opportunity, and his first main-event stoppage gives the promotion a highlight to build around. The question for matchmakers is whether to move him quickly or let him headline again against another established name.

Moicano's path is less clear. He has said he intends to fight out his contract and test the market, and his next booking will signal whether the UFC still sees him as a gatekeeper to the elite or as a veteran on the way out. Either way, the controversy of Saturday night ensures his next fight will carry a narrative: a proud veteran seeking to prove that the real story of UFC Vegas 123 was not the stoppage, but the two rounds that came before it.
