Ken Paxton has scrapped the planned finale of his Texas Senate campaign at the Alamo, quietly replacing the symbolic closing rally with two Monday events far from San Antonio, just two days before voters in Texas choose their next United States senator. The change, reported on Saturday, October 31, 2026, by the Texas Tribune, strips the Republican nominee's 18-day "Come and Take It" bus tour of the ending around which the whole closing push was built, and it lands at the most delicate moment of a neck-and-neck race against Democrat James Talarico.

Key Points

• Ken Paxton was due to close his "Come and Take It" bus tour at the Alamo in San Antonio on Monday, November 2, the eve of Election Day.
• On Saturday, his campaign instead added Monday events in Conroe at 11 a.m. and in Allen at 5:30 p.m., the latter at a restaurant about 300 miles from the Alamo.
• The only Monday events listed by the campaign on Eventbrite were for Conroe and Allen, and the campaign website listed no Monday events at all.
• The Alamo Trust, which oversees the landmark, told Texas Public Radio on Friday that it was unaware of any plans for Paxton to hold an event on the grounds, where political events are generally prohibited.
• Paxton's campaign did not immediately respond to questions about what prompted the change, the Tribune reported.

What Happened

When Paxton's campaign announced its get-out-the-vote push, it said the tour would end at the Alamo. The landmark of Texas resistance was the centrepiece of the closing message: Paxton drew on the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, a loss in the Texas Revolution that became a rallying cry, to tell voters, "When they come after Texans, Ken Paxton goes after them." The tour, which began on October 17 in Rockwall, outside Dallas, was scheduled to make more than 30 stops across the state before that final stand in San Antonio.

On Saturday, two days before the planned finale, that ending appeared to vanish. The campaign added the Conroe and Allen events for Monday, and those were the only Monday events it listed on Eventbrite, the platform where it has posted its tour stops. Its own website, the Tribune noted, did not list any events for Monday. The campaign did not immediately answer questions about what prompted the switch, and it had previously not responded to requests for logistical information about the Alamo event.

The Alamo Trust's statement added a further complication. It told Texas Public Radio on Friday that it was unaware of any plans for Paxton to host an event on the grounds. The Alamo's rules generally prohibit political events on the grounds, which raises an obvious question the campaign has not answered: whether the finale was ever booked in a form the site would have allowed, or whether it was always more of a campaign theme than a confirmed venue booking. Paxton's campaign has not said.

What is clear is the geography of the replacement. Conroe, north of Houston, and Allen, north of Dallas, are both in the populous north Texas and Houston corridors, and the Allen stop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at a restaurant some 300 miles from the Alamo. In other words, the closing day has been rebuilt around two suburban stops rather than a single set-piece at one of the most famous sites in Texas.

Background and Context

Paxton, the Texas attorney general and the Republican nominee, is locked in a neck-and-neck race against Talarico, a Democratic state representative, for the Senate seat being vacated by outgoing Senator John Cornyn. Paxton has pitched himself to Texans as a conservative fighter who would preserve the state's conservative tradition in defiance of what he calls the "radical left," and he has appeared at several rallies in Texas headlined by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance in a bid to energise Republican voters.

Talarico has been crisscrossing the state on his own get-out-the-vote sprint, dubbed the "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts" tour, a nod to the television series "Friday Night Lights," which was inspired by a book about West Texas high school football. The contrast between the two closing tours has become part of the race itself: one built around a defiant historical symbol, the other around a pop-cultural shorthand for Texas identity.

The Alamo change was not the first disruption to Paxton's final push. The Tribune reported that his tour was also dotted by other cancellations and reschedules, including events in El Paso, Tyler, Texarkana and Mission. Earlier reporting had already noted small crowds at some stops and scrapped appearances, and Democrats seized on the pattern on Friday, declaring a "Paxton bus tour crashout." The campaign has not publicly explained the earlier changes either, leaving a gap that opponents have been quick to fill.

The stakes are national as well as Texan. The November 3 midterms will decide all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, and Republicans are defending a 53-47 Senate majority. Texas, long a Republican stronghold at statewide level, has become one of the most closely watched Senate contests in the country, and early voting in the state smashed previous records, with more than seven million Texans casting ballots before Election Day. In a race this close, the final 48 hours are about turnout above all else, which is why the shape of the closing tour matters more than it might in a comfortable contest.

Ken Paxton Alamo Finale: Why the Change Matters

The Alamo was never just a venue for this campaign. It was the argument. "Come and Take It" is a slogan drawn from Texas revolutionary history, and ending at the Alamo was meant to fuse Paxton's personal brand — the attorney general who fights Washington, the courts and, in his telling, the left — with the state's founding myth of holding the line against overwhelming odds. Losing that ending does not change a single policy position, but it does change the story voters hear in the final news cycle before they vote.

It also hands Talarico's campaign a ready-made line, and it used it within hours. In a statement on Friday, Talarico said: "No one's going to Ken Paxton's rallies, so he's canceling them and hoping Elon Musk will buy this seat for him." The statement alluded to the more than $200 million that Musk has poured into the race on Paxton's behalf, according to the Tribune. Talarico added: "Texas deserves a Senator that shows up — not one that hides behind a pile of money." Whether voters accept that framing is a different question from whether it will be repeated, and in the final weekend of a campaign, repetition is half the battle.

There is a second, quieter consequence. Campaigns plan their final days around television pictures and local news coverage, and a rally at the Alamo would have guaranteed both. Two suburban stops in Conroe and Allen may be better for reaching specific voters, but they are unlikely to generate the same statewide imagery. If Paxton's team made the switch for logistical reasons — the Alamo's ban on political events, a scheduling clash, a security concern — it has not said so, and the silence allows the simplest explanation, that the event was never firmly booked, to circulate unchallenged.

Reactions and Quotes

Paxton's campaign has not, at the time of the Tribune's report, explained the change. It did not immediately respond to questions about what prompted it, and it had previously not responded to requests for logistical information about the Alamo event. That silence is itself part of the story, because campaigns in the final days of a close race usually rush to frame any schedule change on their own terms.

Talarico's response was swift and pointed. "No one's going to Ken Paxton's rallies, so he's canceling them and hoping Elon Musk will buy this seat for him," he said in a statement on Friday, before adding: "Texas deserves a Senator that shows up — not one that hides behind a pile of money." The reference to Musk's spending — more than $200 million on Paxton's behalf, as reported by the Tribune — ties the schedule change to a broader Democratic argument about the race: that Paxton's campaign is being carried by outside money rather than grassroots enthusiasm.

The Alamo Trust, for its part, offered no political commentary, only a factual correction of sorts. It told Texas Public Radio on Friday that it was unaware of any plans for Paxton to host an event on the grounds, and the site's rules generally prohibit political events there. That statement does not prove the campaign never intended to hold an event nearby rather than on the grounds themselves, but it does show that, days before the supposed finale, the institution that runs the site had no record of it.

Paxton's own closing message, as framed at the tour's launch, remains the campaign's best summary of its intent: "When they come after Texans, Ken Paxton goes after them." The question for the final two days is whether that message still lands without the Alamo as its backdrop, or whether voters in Conroe and Allen hear it just as clearly from a restaurant and a suburban stop.

Why It Matters

Schedule changes in the final weekend of a campaign are rarely just logistics. They are read, fairly or not, as signals about momentum, organisation and crowd enthusiasm, and in a neck-and-neck race those signals can move the small number of undecided voters who decide statewide contests. Paxton's team clearly judged that Conroe and Allen were worth more on Monday than San Antonio, or that the Alamo event could not proceed as planned, and either judgement tells voters something about where the campaign thinks the race will be won.

The episode also fits a wider pattern in this midterm cycle, in which both parties have leaned heavily on symbolic closing events — rallies in battleground cities, bus tours named for slogans, final appearances designed for television — while early voting has already banked tens of millions of ballots nationally. With more than 50 million Americans having voted early before the weekend, according to the University of Florida's Election Lab, the final rallies are aimed less at persuading the undecided than at making sure supporters who have not yet voted actually turn out on Tuesday.

For Texas specifically, the Alamo switch is a reminder of how tight the race has become. A campaign confident of a comfortable win does not usually rewrite its closing day 48 hours beforehand. A campaign in a genuine toss-up might, and Paxton versus Talarico has been described as neck-and-neck for weeks. The new Monday schedule, whatever its cause, will now be watched as a test of whether Paxton can still draw the crowds his closing argument needs.

What Happens Next

Monday, November 2, is now the key date. Paxton is scheduled to appear in Conroe at 11 a.m. and in Allen at 5:30 p.m., and the size and tone of those events will be the first public evidence of how the campaign is handling the change. If the crowds are large and enthusiastic, the Alamo story will fade quickly. If they are thin, or if the campaign changes the schedule again, the story will grow.

Talarico, meanwhile, continues his own tour through the final day, and Democrats are likely to keep pressing the "shows up" argument in the closing hours. Expect the Musk spending figure — more than $200 million — to feature heavily in Democratic messaging through Election Day, alongside the claim that Paxton's rallies are being cancelled for lack of attendance.

Then comes Tuesday, November 3, when Texas voters decide the race in full. Polls close in Texas at 7 p.m. local time for most of the state, with the westernmost counties closing an hour later, and the first results will show whether the early-vote surge favoured either party. The Alamo finale that never happened will be a footnote by then if Paxton wins, and a symbol of a faltering finish if he loses. Either way, the campaign's final 48 hours now run through Conroe and Allen, not San Antonio.
