President Donald Trump has publicly backed Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang after a report that a Chinese executive who interacted with Huang had been funnelling information to Beijing, telling reporters on Saturday that the United States is looking 'very closely' at the issue and describing Huang as a 'great, brilliant person' the country should protect.

The Jensen Huang China spy plot report, first carried by The New York Times on Thursday, said US intelligence officials had concluded that a Chinese executive linked to a Singapore-based data centre company, who had interacted with Huang, was passing information to Beijing. China has dismissed the report as 'groundless speculation.' Trump, speaking at his Florida residence, said he had not known about the specific allegation, but made clear he still had confidence in Huang — for now.

Key Points

• The New York Times reported on Thursday that US intelligence concluded a Chinese executive linked to a Singapore data centre firm funnelled information to Beijing after interacting with Jensen Huang.
• Trump said on Saturday the US is examining the report 'very closely' and called Huang 'a great, brilliant person'.
• Asked if Huang would stay on as an adviser, Trump said he would like that to continue unless investigators find something to the contrary.
• China dismissed the report as 'groundless speculation.'
• Huang has advised Trump on AI policy and joined tech chief executives on Trump's visit to Beijing in May to meet President Xi Jinping.

What Happened

Trump voiced his support on Saturday, according to multiple reports of his remarks to reporters at his Florida residence. 'I have a lot of respect for Jensen. I didn't know about the specific thing, but I hope he's going to be OK. He's a great, brilliant person, and we want to protect our brilliant people,' Trump said. 'We're going to check it out very closely,' he added.

The question put to him was direct: would he keep Huang as an adviser on US technology policy amid questions about Huang's relationship with a suspected Chinese operative? 'I would like to say yes. I mean, unless we find out something to the contrary, I've always found Jensen Huang to be very above board,' Trump replied. 'But you know, you're dealing in a very complex issue,' he added. That careful wording — support, plus a hedge — is the heart of the story: Trump defended Huang's character while leaving the door open to a different conclusion if investigators find evidence.

The underlying report, as described in the coverage, does not allege that Huang himself passed information to Beijing. It says US intelligence officials concluded that a Chinese executive connected to a Singapore-based data centre company, who had interacted with Huang, had been funnelling information to Beijing. The distinction matters, and it is why Trump's remarks were framed as both a defence of Huang and a promise of scrutiny: the allegation concerns a contact in Huang's orbit, not a finding against Huang himself. No detail in the public reporting names a charge against Huang, and no US official quoted in the coverage accuses him of wrongdoing.

Background: Huang, Nvidia and the US-China Chip Contest

Huang is one of the most consequential figures in the global artificial intelligence race. As co-founder, president and chief executive of Nvidia, he leads the company whose graphics processors power much of the world's AI training and inference, making Nvidia a central player in US export controls, chip supply chains and the strategic competition with China. That is why any intelligence question touching Huang, however indirect, draws immediate White House attention.

Huang has also been a visible adviser to Trump on AI policy, and was among the technology chief executives who joined the US leader on his visit to Beijing in May to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. That dual role — running a company that sells into China and the wider world while advising a US president who is restricting advanced chip sales to China — puts Huang at the centre of one of the most sensitive policy tensions in Washington. It also explains why Trump, when asked about the report, reached first for praise and only then for caution.

The wider context is a long-running US effort to limit China's access to the most advanced semiconductors and the equipment to make them, while China works to build its own capacity. Intelligence assessments of Chinese efforts to obtain technology through business contacts, joint ventures and data centre deals are a recurring theme in that contest, and Singapore — a major data centre hub — has repeatedly featured in discussions of how technology and information move across borders. The New York Times report, as summarised in Saturday's coverage, fits that pattern: a business contact, a data centre link and an intelligence conclusion about information flowing to Beijing.

Jensen Huang China Spy Plot: What Is Known and What Is Not

What is known is narrow, and the article should keep it that way. A Thursday New York Times report said US intelligence officials concluded that a Chinese executive linked to a Singapore-based data centre company, who had interacted with Huang, was funnelling information to Beijing. Trump confirmed on Saturday that the US is examining the matter closely. China dismissed the report as groundless speculation. Huang has not, in the coverage reviewed for this article, been quoted responding to the allegation, and no public evidence tying him to any improper disclosure has been published.

What is not known is much larger: the identity of the executive in detail, what information was allegedly passed, over what period, whether it involved Nvidia technology, business plans or personal information about Huang, and whether US agencies regard the matter as a counterintelligence investigation, a security review or both. Trump himself said he did not know about 'the specific thing' before being asked. Until US officials or the Times publish more, any claim beyond the reported intelligence conclusion would be speculation, and this article does not make one.

Reactions and Quotes

'I have a lot of respect for Jensen,' Trump told reporters at his Florida residence. 'I hope he's going to be OK. He's a great, brilliant person, and we want to protect our brilliant people.' On keeping Huang as an adviser, he said: 'I would like to say yes. I mean, unless we find out something to the contrary, I've always found Jensen Huang to be very above board.' And on the investigation itself: 'We're going to check it out very closely.'

China's response, as reported, was blunt: the report was 'groundless speculation.' That denial, issued after the Times report, does not address the specific intelligence conclusion in public, and Beijing has not, in the coverage reviewed, identified the executive or the company concerned. The contrast between Washington's 'very closely' and Beijing's dismissal sets up the next phase: a quiet US review, conducted while both governments publicly hold their lines.

Why It Matters

This story matters for three reasons. First, it touches the person at the top of the world's most important AI chip company, at a moment when US policy on China, chips and AI is being written in real time. Any question about the security of Huang's contacts will be read by allies, rivals and markets as a signal about how Washington views the risks around its own technology leaders.

Second, it tests Trump's relationship with the technology industry he has courted. Huang has advised him, travelled with him and built a company whose fortunes are tied to US AI policy. Trump's answer — praise, a conditional yes to keeping Huang as an adviser, and a promise of close scrutiny — tries to hold both positions at once: loyalty to a valued adviser and responsibility for national security. How that balance holds if investigators report back will be watched closely in Silicon Valley and in Washington.

Third, it is a reminder of how intelligence stories work in public: a reported conclusion, a denial, a presidential comment and a review, with the underlying evidence still classified. Readers should expect the next development to be procedural — a statement that a review is complete, a briefing, or a further report — rather than a dramatic public disclosure. The significance will lie in what the review finds, and in whether Huang's advisory role changes as a result.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is the US review Trump promised: officials will examine the reported intelligence assessment and the executive's contacts with Huang. If the review finds nothing implicating Huang, expect a quiet confirmation that he remains an adviser, with no further public detail. If it finds a security concern, the response could range from tightened handling of Huang's advisory access to a broader review of technology executives' contacts with Chinese-linked firms.

Nvidia, which has not been quoted in the coverage reviewed for this article, may also be asked to clarify the nature of the Singapore data centre link and whether any company information was involved. Markets will watch for any such statement, as well as for any US action on data centre or chip-related rules that could follow from the review. For now, the story rests where Trump left it on Saturday: Huang defended, the report under close examination, and a conditional yes to his continued advisory role.
