Catherine Debrunner won the 2026 New York City Marathon women's wheelchair race in dominant style on Sunday, November 1, 2026, crossing the finish in Central Park in 1 hour, 40 minutes and 2 seconds to claim her second title in New York. The Swiss star, the 2023 champion and the course record holder, built a lead of nearly two minutes in the first 10 miles and was never caught, finishing more than eight minutes ahead of five-time New York winner Tatyana McFadden.

The victory, reported by FloTrack and in USA Today's live race coverage on Sunday morning, completed a Swiss double in the professional wheelchair divisions on marathon morning, after Marcel Hug had won the men's wheelchair race earlier the same day. Defending champion Susannah Scaroni, a three-time New York winner, finished third behind Debrunner and McFadden.

What Happened

The professional wheelchair divisions started at 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, the first professional races of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, and Debrunner made her intentions clear almost immediately. FloTrack's live coverage had her reaching 5K in 11:44, already in front, and extending her lead to more than two minutes by 10K. USA Today reported that she had built a nearly two-minute lead after the first 10 miles, and from that point the race became a question of how large the winning margin would be, not who would win it.

Debrunner passed halfway in 46:52, putting herself well ahead of course-record pace at that stage, according to FloTrack. The gap kept growing through the second half of the course. At 35K she led McFadden by 7 minutes and 40 seconds, with Scaroni third. She crossed the finish line in Central Park in 1:40:02, a time just 30 seconds shy of her own course record of 1:39:32, set in her 2023 victory.

McFadden, a five-time New York Marathon winner and one of the most decorated athletes in the history of wheelchair racing, finished second, more than eight minutes behind Debrunner. Scaroni, who had won in New York last year and was aiming for a third consecutive title, finished third. The result was reported from preliminary New York Road Runners results by FloTrack, which published its race report on Sunday morning shortly after the finish, and it was consistent with USA Today's live updates, which described Debrunner as dominating the women's field.

The course itself is one of the great tests in marathon running. The race starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and passes through all five boroughs before finishing in Central Park in Manhattan. For wheelchair racers, the bridges, the turns through the boroughs and the rolling final miles in Central Park all demand precise handling at high speed, and Debrunner's ability to build and then hold such a large lead over 26.2 miles underlines how complete her performance was.

Background/Context

The 2026 edition of the New York City Marathon carries extra significance. It marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course, first run on October 24, 1976, and it features a course change for the first time in 15 years, with an adjustment in the Bronx intended to reduce the event's neighbourhood impact. More than 60,000 runners from about 140 countries were expected to take part in 2026, after a record 59,226 runners crossed the finish line in 2025.

Debrunner, 31, arrived in New York as a former champion with a point to prove. She won in New York in 2023, setting the women's wheelchair course record of 1:39:32, and she has held that record ever since. Sunday's performance gives her a second New York title and confirms her place at the top of the women's wheelchair division in the race's modern era.

Her rivals brought formidable records of their own. McFadden has won in New York five times, a record that speaks to a career of sustained excellence in the event. Scaroni, the defending champion, had won three New York titles in total and was attempting to win a third in a row on Sunday, after returning to competition following the birth of her baby boy in August. That both women were beaten by more than eight minutes shows the scale of Debrunner's dominance rather than any weakness in the field behind her.

The women's wheelchair race was the second professional result of the morning, after the men's wheelchair race had produced a finish of a very different kind. Marcel Hug won the men's race in 1:28:14, beating Daniel Romanchuk by just 1.13 seconds in the closest finish in the event's history. Debrunner's race, by contrast, was decided early and then managed with authority all the way to Central Park.

Catherine Debrunner NYC Marathon Win: A Dominant Second Title

A winning margin of more than eight minutes in a marathon is rare at the elite level, and it is what sets Debrunner's victory apart. In most major marathons, the leading wheelchair racers stay together for long stretches, drafting, watching each other and waiting for the decisive move. Debrunner did not wait. She went clear in the first 10 miles, stretched the lead past two minutes by 10K, and then kept extending it, reaching halfway in 46:52 and holding a lead of 7 minutes and 40 seconds at 35K.

That kind of race requires more than speed. It requires the confidence to race alone for more than an hour, without another athlete to follow or to measure yourself against, and the discipline to hold a pace that is fast enough to stay ahead of course-record schedule without fading in the final miles. Debrunner did both. Her finishing time of 1:40:02 was only 30 seconds outside her own course record, which means she came close to the fastest time ever recorded in the race even while racing alone for most of the distance.

It also matters that the performance came on a day when the marathon itself was celebrating a landmark. The 50th anniversary of the five-borough course, the first course change in 15 years and a field of more than 60,000 runners all made the 2026 race a showcase occasion, and Debrunner produced a performance worthy of it. A dominant victory on such a stage is remembered in a way that a narrow win, however dramatic, sometimes is not.

For the sport, the result also underlines the depth of the women's wheelchair field in New York. A race headed by a former champion and course record holder, a five-time winner and a defending champion attempting a third straight victory is a race with genuine star quality, and Debrunner's ability to beat that field by such a margin is a statement about where she stands in it.

Reactions/Quotes

The early reporting on Sunday focused on the facts of the race rather than extended post-race interviews, and no direct post-race quotations from Debrunner, McFadden or Scaroni were included in the preliminary reports checked for this article. What the reporting did make clear was how the race was experienced by those following it: USA Today described Debrunner as dominating the women's field and coasting home, while FloTrack stressed how early she took control and how large her lead became.

Those descriptions, rather than any single quotation, capture the character of the victory. This was not a race that swung back and forth, or one decided by a late surge. It was a race that Debrunner controlled from the first kilometres, built into a commanding lead by halfway, and then closed out with a finishing time close to her own course record.

Any post-race reaction from the three leading athletes will add personal detail to a result that, for now, is best understood through its splits and its margin: a lead of nearly two minutes after 10 miles, 7 minutes and 40 seconds at 35K, and more than eight minutes at the finish.

Why It Matters

Debrunner's second New York title matters for three reasons. First, it confirms her as a multiple winner in the world's largest marathon, rather than a one-time champion. Winning once can be a breakthrough; winning twice, three years apart, with a course record in between, is a record of sustained excellence.

Second, it matters because of how it was won. A dominant victory gives wheelchair racing a clear headline on the biggest stage in marathon running, at a time when the professional wheelchair divisions open the race day and set the tone for everything that follows. A performance that is decided early but never in doubt can still be compelling, because it shows an athlete operating at a level the rest of the field cannot reach on the day.

Third, it matters for the rivalry at the top of the women's division. McFadden's five New York titles and Scaroni's three titles, including last year's victory, mean that Debrunner's second title was won against the two most successful active athletes in the race. Beating that field by more than eight minutes does not diminish their records; it raises the standard for what it will take to beat Debrunner in New York in future years.

What Happens Next

Attention now turns to the rest of Sunday's racing in New York. The professional women's open race, which started at 8:35 a.m. Eastern, and the professional men's open race, which started at 9:05 a.m. Eastern, were still on the course when the wheelchair results were confirmed, and the mass field of more than 60,000 runners will continue to cross the Central Park finish line through the afternoon and evening.

New York Road Runners will publish the final official results, which will confirm the full classification behind Debrunner, McFadden and Scaroni, including the final positions of the rest of the women's wheelchair field. Any post-race reaction from the leading athletes will also add detail to a race that, for now, is best understood through its splits and its extraordinary margin.

For Debrunner, the victory adds a second New York title to a career already defined by a course record in the same race. For McFadden and Scaroni, the size of the gap will set the challenge for their next meeting with Debrunner in New York: closing a margin of more than eight minutes over 26.2 miles.
