Dallas Deep Ellum shootings left four people dead and 15 injured in three separate shootings in the city's Deep Ellum entertainment district on Halloween night, Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said at a Sunday morning news conference on November 1, 2026. The revised toll is far higher than the early overnight count of five wounded, because, Comeaux said, the number of injured could still rise as some victims were taken to hospitals in private vehicles rather than by ambulance.

Key Points

• Four people were killed and 15 injured in three separate shootings in Deep Ellum early Sunday, Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said.
• The shootings happened at about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, and 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.
• Detectives are still working to determine whether the three shootings are linked; Comeaux called it a chaotic situation spread across a really big scene.
• Several people have been detained and are being interviewed as detectives try to establish each person's role.
• Police had already assigned extra officers to Deep Ellum for Halloween night, and responded quickly as the shootings unfolded.
• No victim names, no formal charges and no motive had been announced at the time of the Sunday morning briefing.

What Happened

The gun violence unfolded in three bursts in the first hours of Sunday, according to a Dallas Police Department news release cited in Sunday reporting. The first shooting was reported at about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second followed at about 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, about a block away. A third was reported at about 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, about two blocks east of the other locations. Deep Ellum, a popular entertainment and arts district east of downtown Dallas, was crowded with Halloween revellers at the time.

At his Sunday morning news conference, Comeaux gave the updated casualty count that supersedes the early overnight reports. 'Right now, in total, we have four people that are deceased from three separate scenes, and we have approximately 15 others that have been injured,' he said, adding that the injured total could increase because some people were taken to hospitals in private vehicles. Earlier overnight summaries, including a CBS News Texas account, had put the wounded count at five, a figure that reflected only the victims known to police in the first hours after the shootings.

The Dallas Morning News reported a breakdown that helps explain the gap: four people were killed across two locations, while at least six others were wounded at a third location. That breakdown, combined with victims who reached hospitals on their own, is consistent with a total injured count of around 15, though police have not yet published a scene-by-scene list of the dead and wounded. A separate shooting call at about 3:30 a.m. along South Ervay Street, outside the Deep Ellum district, was also noted in Sunday reporting, but police have not said whether it is connected to the three Deep Ellum scenes.

Background: Dallas Deep Ellum Shootings Follow a Chaotic Halloween Night

This update follows our earlier report on the same Halloween-night violence, which was based on the first overnight police accounts and put the toll at four dead and five wounded. That early report noted the same three general areas, the closure of the neighbourhood around 1 a.m., and the unresolved questions about whether the shootings were connected and who was in custody. The Sunday morning briefing from Chief Comeaux is the first full official accounting since then, and it replaces the early wounded figure with the higher, still provisional total of 15 injured.

Deep Ellum has seen serious gun violence before. CBS News Texas noted that a shooting in the district about six months earlier left a security officer dead and five other people injured. The district's mix of bars, restaurants, live-music venues and late-night crowds has long made it a focus for extra police staffing on busy nights, and Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year. Comeaux stressed that staffing was not the issue on this occasion: 'We knew it was Saturday night. We knew it was Halloween. So, we were staffed properly,' he said.

The Halloween weekend produced several other serious shootings across the United States, including a fatal shooting after the Magic City Classic college football game in Birmingham, Alabama, and a shooting that injured seven people near Indiana University in Bloomington. Dallas police have not linked the Deep Ellum shootings to any of those incidents, and there is no evidence at this stage that the Dallas scenes are part of a wider pattern beyond a violent holiday weekend.

Dallas Deep Ellum Shootings: What Police Said at the Briefing

Comeaux was blunt about the scale of the investigation and the city's response. 'This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas and we're going to do everything we need to do to get everyone in custody that is responsible for this,' he said. He described the investigation as an effort to assemble a puzzle, telling reporters: 'We really want to put this puzzle together,' and noting that investigators are dealing with 'a really big scene' that is spread out across multiple locations.

On the question of arrests, Comeaux said some persons had been detained and detectives were trying to determine their roles. Other Sunday reporting put it similarly: at least one person was arrested in connection with one of the incidents, and investigators were interviewing people in custody and witnesses to determine what happened. Police have not publicly identified anyone in custody, announced formal charges, or said what led to the gunfire. Sources told local television stations WFAA and FOX 4 that the shootings do not appear to be related, though the investigation is ongoing and police themselves have not ruled a link in or out.

Comeaux declined to give exact addresses for the scenes beyond the blocks already released, and confirmed that all three incidents occurred in Deep Ellum. He also confirmed that Dallas police responded quickly as the situation unfolded, in part because extra officers had already been assigned to the district for Halloween. That rapid response, however, did not prevent the toll from climbing as more victims were identified at hospitals during the morning.

Reactions

The chief's language at the briefing reflected both anger and caution: anger at the violence itself, and caution about drawing conclusions before detectives have finished interviewing witnesses and detained people. That caution is important because the early reporting on this case already contained conflicting details, including different wounded counts and different descriptions of which shooting produced which casualties. The 15-injured figure from the chief's briefing should therefore be treated as the best official total so far, but still provisional, as Comeaux himself warned it could rise.

Dallas police are asking anyone with information, photographs or video from Deep Ellum on Halloween night to contact investigators. In similar cases, video from bars, street cameras and phones has proved decisive in separating connected shootings from coincidental ones that happen to occur in the same district on the same night. Detectives will also be reviewing hospital admissions, including patients who arrived in private vehicles, to build a complete list of victims.

Why It Matters

The revised toll changes the scale of this incident from a serious but contained overnight shooting into one of the deadliest Halloween-night episodes in Dallas in recent years: four dead and 15 injured across three scenes in just over an hour. If the shootings turn out to be unconnected, the city faces a different problem from a single mass shooting: a district where several separate disputes turned lethal on the same crowded night. If they turn out to be linked, the investigation becomes a hunt for a connected group or a single chain of events that moved across Deep Ellum.

Either way, the case will test Dallas's approach to policing busy entertainment districts. Extra officers were already in place, yet four people still died and more than a dozen were hurt. That raises questions about crowd management, bar closing times, weapons in crowded streets, and how quickly disputes can escalate when large Halloween crowds, alcohol and firearms mix. The answers will matter well beyond Deep Ellum, as other American cities review their own Halloween and holiday-weekend policing.

What Happens Next

Detectives will continue to interview detained people and witnesses, review video, and work through hospital records to finalise the casualty list. Police are expected to release victim names only after families have been notified, and to announce charges only when they can tie a specific person to a specific shooting. Further briefings are likely if the injured total changes, if a link between the scenes is confirmed or ruled out, or if additional arrests are made.

For now, the confirmed facts are these: four people are dead, about 15 are injured, three shootings happened in Deep Ellum between about 12:20 a.m. and 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, and several people are being questioned. Everything else, including motive and connection, remains under investigation, and this story will be updated as Dallas police release more information.
