What Happened

The first shooting happened at about 1:42 a.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of Arlington Expressway, in Jacksonville's Regency area. Officers found a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound; she died from her injuries. A second person was also found shot and was taken to hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crews, in stable condition, according to the Sheriff's Office account reported by the Florida Times-Union and Fox 13.

People had been waiting in a crowd in line to get into a nearby Halloween party when a fight broke out and escalated into gunfire, the Sheriff's Office said. Investigators said three people who were shot were not involved in the fight and were unintended targets, and that at least two young men wearing dark clothing were believed responsible for that shooting. All surviving victims in that incident were expected to recover, investigators said.

The second shooting happened a little more than two hours later, at about 3:45 a.m., at a house on West 5th Street near Wilcox Street, in the Durkeeville area on Jacksonville's Westside. A party of 100 to 200 people was under way at the house and had extended into the street, according to the Sheriff's Office. Officers responded to a reported shooting and found a 20-year-old man who had been shot; he was taken to hospital, where he died.

Investigators later learned that nine other people had driven themselves to hospitals with gunshot injuries, bringing the total number of victims in the Westside incident to 10. The injured ranged in age from 15 to 25, including a 15-year-old girl. One victim had life-threatening injuries, while the other eight were described as having non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives said a fight broke out at the house party, leading to two separate instances of gunfire. No suspect information had been released for the Westside shooting as of Sunday, and the Sheriff's Office said it had no suspect information in that case.

The Sheriff's Office posted details of both shootings on X at 11:48 a.m. Sunday. The names of the two people who died, and of the surviving victims, had not been released as of noon Sunday. No arrests had been reported in either shooting at that point, and police said no updates on the conditions of the surviving victims were available beyond the initial assessments.

Background: Jacksonville Halloween Shootings and a Violent Weekend

Jacksonville's two shootings were part of a grim Halloween weekend across the United States, in which several cities reported party and street shootings in the hours after Halloween celebrations on Saturday night. In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight wounded in a shooting outside Legion Field after the Magic City Classic college football game on Saturday night, a story already covered on this site. In Dallas, Texas, four people were killed and 15 injured in three separate shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday. In Bloomington, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman was killed and seven others hurt near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus early Sunday.

Jacksonville, Florida's most populous city, has seen repeated Halloween-weekend violence in recent years, and the Sheriff's Office has repeatedly urged party hosts and venues to plan for security and for crowds to disperse safely. The two incidents early Sunday were unrelated to each other, police stressed — different locations, different parties, different groups — but they shared a pattern that investigators highlighted in both cases: a fight at a crowded party that turned into gunfire, with bystanders caught in it.

The scale of the Westside party also matters to the investigation. With 100 to 200 people at the house and spilling into the street, detectives face a large witness pool and, potentially, a large amount of phone video. Police have not said whether any video has been recovered, and they have not described a weapon or weapons in either incident. The Sheriff's Office's public appeal — for anyone with information to call 904-630-0500, email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org, or contact First Coast Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-866-845-TIPS — suggests investigators are still building the basic picture of who was present and what set each fight off.

Jacksonville Halloween Shootings: What Police Have Said

Sheriff T.K. Waters condemned the shootings in a statement reported on Sunday. The Sheriff's Office's own posts and the local reporting that followed gave the clearest picture so far, and this article does not go beyond what police have confirmed: two dead, 11 injured in total across the two incidents, two fights, two rounds of gunfire at the Westside party, and no arrests as of Sunday noon.

What police have not yet said is also important. They have not named the victims, have not said whether the victims knew the shooters, have not described suspects for the Westside shooting beyond saying they have no suspect information, and have not said whether the two incidents are connected — beyond stating that they were unrelated. The description of at least two young men in dark clothing applies to the Arlington Expressway shooting only, according to the Fox 13 account; it should not be read as a description for the Westside shooting.

For families, the immediate questions are medical. One Westside victim remained in life-threatening condition as of Sunday, and the other injured victims — a 15-year-old girl among them — were being treated in Jacksonville hospitals after arriving on their own or by rescue crews. Police said the surviving victims of the Arlington Expressway shooting were expected to recover.

Reactions

Sheriff Waters' condemnation was the main official reaction reported on Sunday. Beyond that, the public reaction has been the familiar one after a mass-casualty shooting at a party: grief for two young lives lost — a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man, both unnamed so far — and anger that fights at celebrations keep ending in gunfire.

Local reporting noted that the shootings came as Jacksonville police were already managing a busy Halloween weekend, and that the Sheriff's Office moved quickly on Sunday morning to publish the basic facts of both incidents on X, in an apparent effort to prevent rumour from filling the gap. The agency's 11:48 a.m. post was the source for much of Sunday's reporting, and it was updated through the day as local outlets added the sheriff's statement and the tip-line details.

No elected official's statement beyond the sheriff's condemnation was reported in the sources checked for this article, and no community vigil or memorial had been announced as of Sunday noon. That may change as the victims are named and families speak.

Why It Matters

It matters because two teenagers and young adults are dead and 11 more people are injured after what should have been Halloween parties — and because the pattern keeps repeating. In Jacksonville, in Birmingham, in Dallas and in Bloomington, the same weekend produced shootings that began with arguments or fights at crowded gatherings and ended with people who had nothing to do with the argument being shot.

It matters for Jacksonville specifically because the Westside party, with 100 to 200 people, shows how quickly a house party can become unmanageable, and how hard it is for police to reconstruct events afterwards when victims leave on their own and witnesses scatter. The fact that nine Westside victims drove themselves to hospital — rather than being found at the scene — underlines how chaotic the aftermath was, and why police are appealing so widely for information.

It matters, too, because the victims include children: a 17-year-old girl killed and a 15-year-old girl injured. When shootings at parties involve teenagers, the questions for a city go beyond policing — to how parties are hosted, how venues are secured, and how young people are protected when a fight breaks out in a crowd.

What Happens Next

The investigation is now in its evidence-gathering phase. Detectives will interview witnesses from both parties, review any phone video and surveillance footage, and try to establish what started each fight and who fired the shots. The Sheriff's Office has said it has no suspect information for the Westside shooting; for the Arlington Expressway shooting, it has described at least two young men in dark clothing, and that description may be refined as witnesses come forward.

Police may name the victims once next of kin have been notified, and may update the conditions of the injured, including the Westside victim described as having life-threatening injuries. If arrests are made, charges and court appearances will follow, and this site will update the story. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500, email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org, or call First Coast Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-866-845-TIPS.

Jacksonville's Halloween weekend is over, but for the families of the 17-year-old girl and the 20-year-old man, and for the 11 injured, the consequences are only beginning. The next update from police — a name, an arrest, or a change in a victim's condition — will be the next chapter in a story that began with two fights at two parties, two hours apart, on the same Sunday morning.
