Five people were wounded in two separate East Lansing Halloween shootings near Michigan State University in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon, in a violent Halloween night that also saw two pedestrians hit by cars and firefighters answer 75 calls.

Key Points

• Five people were wounded in two East Lansing Halloween shootings early Sunday, November 1, 2026; no one died in either shooting, police said.
• The first shooting happened after midnight near M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street, where three people were shot; two were in stable condition and the condition of the third was unknown to police on Sunday.
• The second shooting happened in the early morning near Stoddard and Frye avenues, where two people were shot and were in stable condition; police recovered multiple guns from that scene.
• Police said there was no known threat to the community at the time of Sunday's news conference, and Michigan State University said the incidents did not take place on campus and posed no threat to campus.
• Two pedestrians were also hit by cars in separate incidents overnight, and drivers were arrested on suspected drunken-driving charges in both cases.

What Happened

East Lansing police were called to the first shooting after midnight on Sunday, at about 12:26 a.m., near Linden Street and M.A.C. Avenue, just off the Michigan State University campus. Officers found three gunshot victims there. Two were in stable condition in hospital on Sunday, Chief Brown said, and she said she did not have a condition for the third victim.

An East Lansing police lieutenant, Chad Stemen, gave medical care to victims at the scene, according to local reporting. Witnesses told Michigan State University's student newspaper, The State News, that they heard between three and seven gunshots in the area. A separate local report, citing a Ring camera video, said at least 20 shots could be heard; that higher count has not been confirmed by police, and this article does not treat it as the official account. A report that a suspect in one incident was wearing a mask resembling Michael Myers from the Halloween films has likewise not been confirmed by the East Lansing Police Department.

The second shooting happened in the early morning near the intersection of Stoddard and Frye avenues. Two gunshot victims were taken to a local hospital and were both in stable condition, Chief Brown said. Police recovered multiple guns from that scene, but she said it had not yet been determined whether those were the weapons used in the shooting.

Chief Brown spoke for less than five minutes at the 3 p.m. Sunday news conference at police headquarters on Park Lane and declined to take questions from reporters. She was joined by East Lansing Fire Chief John Newman, Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Jay Barkley, Mayor Erik Altmann and Councilman Steve Whelan, none of whom spoke at the news conference.

Police have not announced an arrest in connection with either shooting, and they have not released the names or ages of the five shooting victims. Chief Brown said several people were arrested overnight, but the Lansing State Journal reported that those arrests included people involved in the two drunken-driving crashes described below, not necessarily anyone connected to the shootings. "There's no known threat to the community at this time," Brown said.

Background: East Lansing Halloween Shootings and a Busy Night for Emergency Crews

The two shootings were part of a night that stretched East Lansing's emergency services. The East Lansing Fire Department responded to 75 calls overnight and received help from Lansing and surrounding jurisdictions, Chief Brown said. That workload reflects how busy Halloween night was in the city, with large crowds in the streets around the university area.

Before midnight, a vehicle struck a pedestrian near Abbot Road and Library Lane. A suspect was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The pedestrian was initially in critical condition but was listed in stable condition after surgery on Sunday, Chief Brown said. Sometime later, officers were sent to Grand River Avenue and Gunson Street for another pedestrian crash. Police arrested a driver for suspected drunken driving and recovered a firearm from the driver's vehicle.

The two pedestrian crashes were separate from the two shootings, but Chief Brown detailed all four incidents in chronological order at the news conference, because they together explain why the night was so demanding for police, firefighters and hospitals. In total, the four incidents left five people shot and two pedestrians injured, with no deaths reported in any of them as of Sunday afternoon.

East Lansing is the home of Michigan State University, a campus of about 50,000 students, and Halloween weekend brings large numbers of students and visitors into the streets around it. The university's police department assisted East Lansing police in responding to the shootings, Michigan State spokesperson Amber McCann said by email on Sunday. McCann said the shootings did not involve any threat to the campus, and the criminal activity did not take place on the university's campus.

For the East Lansing community, the news will inevitably recall the February 2023 shooting on the Michigan State campus itself, in which three people were killed and five injured at Berkey Hall and the MSU Union. Sunday's incidents were different in important respects: they happened off campus, no one died, and police said there was no known threat to the community. But the memory of 2023 is part of why a shooting near the campus, on a crowded Halloween night, frightens students and families even when the immediate danger has passed.

East Lansing Halloween Shootings: What Police Have Said

What police have confirmed is deliberately narrow, and it is worth stating plainly. Five people were shot in two incidents. Four of the five were in stable condition on Sunday; the condition of the fifth was unknown to police. No one died. Multiple guns were recovered from the second scene, with no determination yet on whether they were used. No arrest in connection with the shootings had been announced. There was no known threat to the community at the time of the news conference, and there was no threat to the Michigan State campus.

What police have not said is equally important. They have not named the victims, have not described suspects, have not said whether the two shootings are connected, and have not confirmed the mask report or the higher gunshot count from the Ring video. Chief Brown declined to take questions, so reporters could not test those unconfirmed details on Sunday. Until police update the public, those details should be treated as unverified reports, not as facts of the case.

"The victims and their families are in our thoughts and prayers," Brown said. "We are aware that this situation was extremely frightening for bystanders and Michigan State University students, as well as their families." That sentence, brief as it was, was the clearest acknowledgement at the news conference of how the night felt to the people who heard gunfire in a residential area on Halloween.

Reactions

The main official reaction on Sunday came from Chief Brown herself, in that short statement, and from Michigan State University, which moved quickly to reassure students that the incidents were off campus and did not threaten the campus. Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz also addressed the incidents on social media, according to local reporting, although the full text of his message was not available in the sources checked for this article.

Beyond the official statements, the reaction in East Lansing has been shaped by the wider Halloween weekend. Across the United States, the same weekend produced shootings at parties and in entertainment districts in several cities, including Dallas, where four people were killed and 15 injured in the Deep Ellum district, Jacksonville, where two people were killed and 11 injured at two Halloween parties, and Birmingham, where one person was killed and eight wounded after the Magic City Classic game. East Lansing's outcome — five wounded, none killed — was less deadly than those, but it adds to a national picture of a Halloween weekend in which celebrations repeatedly turned violent.

No community vigil or memorial had been announced as of Sunday afternoon, and no elected official beyond the city leaders present at the news conference had issued a statement in the sources checked. That may change as victims are named and as police release more detail about what happened at each location.

Why It Matters

It matters because five people were shot on a night when thousands of young people were out celebrating Halloween near a major university, and because the public still does not know who shot them or why. A shooting with no arrest and no suspect description leaves a neighbourhood uneasy, even when police say there is no known threat, because residents cannot judge for themselves whether the danger has passed.

It matters, too, because of what the night shows about Halloween policing in a college town. Two shootings, two pedestrian crashes involving suspected drunken drivers, 75 fire calls and mutual aid from neighbouring jurisdictions: that is a system stretched to its limit on a single night. The fact that East Lansing police could still hold a news conference by 3 p.m. on Sunday, with the fire chief, state police and city leaders present, shows an effort to give the public a clear, early account. The fact that the chief took no questions shows the limits of that account so far.

For students and their families, the distinction police drew — off campus, no campus threat — matters a great deal, and it is the detail most likely to be repeated in the days ahead. But it does not answer the questions families will ask next: who were the five people shot, are they students, and will anyone be charged? Those answers will come only from the investigation, and from whether witnesses who were in the crowds on Linden Street and Stoddard Avenue come forward.

What Happens Next

East Lansing police are investigating both shootings, and the next update is likely to cover the condition of the fifth victim, whether any arrest has been made, and whether the guns recovered at the second scene were used. Police have not announced a further news conference, but the department's earlier plan — a Sunday press conference announced after the shootings were confirmed — suggests further updates will follow as information is verified.

Hospitals will also be watched for updates on the two pedestrians hit by cars, one of whom was critical before surgery on Sunday and then stable. The drunken-driving cases arising from those crashes will proceed separately from the shooting investigations, and police have already confirmed arrests in both of them.

For Michigan State, the next step is reassurance and routine: classes and campus life continuing with the university's statement that there is no campus threat, while students who were near the shootings, or who heard the gunfire, are offered support. For East Lansing as a city, the next step is the harder one — finding out what happened on two residential streets in the early hours of Halloween, and whether the people responsible can be identified before another crowded weekend.
