Three people, including a 5-year-old boy, died late on Halloween night in a crash on Interstate 95 in Martin County, Florida, after the car they were riding in struck a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder, the Florida Highway Patrol said on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The crash happened at about 11:05 p.m. on October 31 in the Palm City area, about two miles north of the Martin Highway exit, and it left two other people in the car injured, one of them seriously.

Key Points

• Three people died in a two-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 95 in Martin County, Florida, late on October 31, 2026, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
• The victims were a 34-year-old Port St. Lucie man, a 5-year-old Port St. Lucie boy and a woman whose age and hometown were not given. All three were passengers in a 2017 Toyota Camry.
• The Camry was travelling in the outside lane when, for reasons the patrol said were undetermined, it moved onto the right paved shoulder and hit the rear left corner of a parked tractor-trailer.
• The car's driver, a 31-year-old Port St. Lucie woman, suffered non-incapacitating injuries, while an 11-year-old girl in the car suffered incapacitating injuries and was flown to hospital.
• The truck driver, a 60-year-old Miami man, was not hurt, and the northbound lanes were closed after the crash, with traffic diverted onto Martin Highway.

What Happened

According to the Florida Highway Patrol's account, reported on November 1, the crash involved two vehicles on the northbound side of Interstate 95. The first was a 2017 Toyota Camry, driven by a 31-year-old woman from Port St. Lucie. The second was a 2012 Kenworth tractor towing a 53-foot single box trailer, driven by a 60-year-old man from Miami. The tractor-trailer was parked on the right paved shoulder of the interstate.

The patrol said the Toyota was travelling in the outside lane when, for undetermined reasons, it moved onto the right paved shoulder. The right front of the Toyota struck the rear left corner of the trailer. After the impact, the Toyota rotated across all three northbound lanes before coming to rest, the patrol said.

Three passengers in the Toyota died: the 34-year-old Port St. Lucie man, the 5-year-old Port St. Lucie boy and the woman whose age and city of residence were not specified. The report reviewed for this article did not name any of the people involved, and it did not say how the victims were related to one another or to the driver. Two other people in the Toyota survived. The driver sustained injuries described by the patrol as non-incapacitating and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance. The 11-year-old girl, also a passenger, sustained injuries described as incapacitating and was flown by helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center in Palm Beach County. The report gave no further update on her condition, and the truck driver was not hurt.

After the crash, the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed while emergency crews worked at the scene, and northbound traffic was diverted onto Martin Highway, the patrol said. The report did not say how long the closure lasted, whether any charges were filed, or whether speed, distraction or impairment played a part. Those questions remain unanswered in the information released so far.

Background and Context

The crash happened in Martin County, on the Treasure Coast of Florida, in the Palm City area. Interstate 95 is the main north-south highway along Florida's east coast, carrying heavy through traffic between South Florida and the rest of the state, and the stretch through Martin County includes the Martin Highway exit, near where the crash was reported. The incident was reported at 11:05 p.m. on October 31, a Saturday night when Halloween celebrations were under way across the region, though the patrol's account does not say where the Camry's occupants had been travelling from or where they were headed.

Crashes in which a moving vehicle strikes a stopped vehicle on a highway shoulder are among the most dangerous kinds of road collisions, because the speed difference is so large. A car at highway speed that meets a stationary truck trailer has almost no room to slow down. Highway agencies warn drivers to avoid stopping on the shoulder except in a genuine emergency. In this case, the patrol has not said why the tractor-trailer was parked on the shoulder, how long it had been there, or whether its hazard lights were in use, and none of those details should be assumed.

Port St. Lucie, where four of the five people in the Camry lived, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida, and many of its residents use Interstate 95 daily. The loss of a child and two other people in a single vehicle, on a single night, reverberates through a community far beyond the crash scene itself, even when, as here, the victims have not yet been publicly named.

Florida I-95 Crash in Martin County: What Investigators Know So Far

What is known so far comes from the Florida Highway Patrol's account, and it is worth setting out plainly, separating what the patrol has said from what it has not. The patrol has said when the crash was reported, where it happened, which vehicles were involved, the ages and hometowns of most of the people involved, the sequence of the collision, and the outcome for each person. It described the injuries to the two survivors in its standard terms, non-incapacitating for the driver and incapacitating for the 11-year-old girl, without giving medical detail.

What the patrol has not said is just as important. It has not said why the Camry left its lane, why the Kenworth was stopped, or the names of anyone involved, and it has not said whether any citation was issued. Readers should treat any claim beyond the patrol's account with caution until the patrol releases more information. Fatal crash investigations in Florida typically involve a scene reconstruction, vehicle examinations and witness interviews, and can take weeks before a final account is released.

Reactions

No statements from the victims' families were included in the report reviewed for this article, and no direct quotations from troopers or other officials were published in it beyond the factual account summarised above. That is common in the first hours after a fatal crash, when the priority for investigators is the scene, the injured and the notification of families, rather than public comment. The human scale of the loss needs no quotation to be understood: a 5-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were among the occupants of one family car on a Saturday night, and one child did not survive the night while the other was flown to hospital with serious injuries. Local reporting of the crash has so far been limited to the patrol's account, and no fundraising appeal, vigil or community statement has been reported in the material reviewed.

Why It Matters

This crash matters for three reasons. The first is the simplest: three people are dead, including a small child, and a second child is seriously hurt. The second is public: the crash happened on one of Florida's busiest highways, at night, in a collision with a parked truck on the shoulder, a pattern highway safety officials have warned about for years. The third is about information: in the first hours after a fatal crash, the public record is often thin, and readers should be wary of social media accounts that fill the gaps with names, causes or blame before the patrol has released them, because those details, when wrong, cause real harm to grieving families and to the investigation.

What Happens Next

The next steps depend on the Florida Highway Patrol. Further information may include the names of the victims once families have been notified, an update on the condition of the 11-year-old girl taken to St. Mary's Medical Center, and, in time, a fuller account of why the Camry moved onto the shoulder and why the Kenworth was parked there. It may also include whether any enforcement action follows, though no such action has been reported so far. For drivers using Interstate 95 through Martin County, the immediate disruption has passed: the northbound lanes were closed after the crash and traffic was diverted onto Martin Highway, but the closure was a temporary response to the scene, not a lasting change to the road.
