The Denver Broncos beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Empower Field at Mile High, scoring 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and then stopping Patrick Mahomes at the goal line in the final seconds to complete one of the most dramatic comebacks of the NFL season. Denver trailed 24-13 at the end of the third quarter, looked beaten after three three-and-outs in the second half, and then found a way — twice on fourth down, once on a rookie's 51-yard catch-and-run, and finally with a sack that ended Kansas City's last drive four seconds from time.

What Happened

For three quarters, this looked like another Kansas City statement win. The Chiefs led 7-3 after the first quarter, 17-13 at half-time, and 24-13 after Mahomes found Noah Gray for a four-yard touchdown with 1:38 left in the third quarter. Denver's offence had stalled completely in the second half, and the home crowd, which had booed during a barren third quarter, seemed to sense the game slipping away.

Then the fourth quarter arrived, and with it the kind of finish that defines a season. Denver drove 80 yards in nine plays, and on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line, Nix found tight end Nate Adkins for a touchdown with 8:55 remaining. Nix then found Jaylen Waddle for the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 24-21 and changing the noise inside the stadium completely.

Kansas City still had chances. Harrison Butker, who had already kicked a 45-yard field goal late in the first half, pushed a later field-goal attempt wide, handing Denver the ball at its own 44-yard line with a touchdown enough to take the lead. Two plays later, the game turned for good: Nix hit rookie Jonah Coleman, who broke free for 51 yards to the Kansas City five-yard line. On the next meaningful snap, Coleman powered five yards up the middle for the touchdown with 1:56 left, and Wil Lutz's extra point put Denver ahead 28-24.

Mahomes, who had thrown for 321 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, still had time for one last drive. He moved Kansas City quickly inside the Denver 20, and the Chiefs reached first-and-goal territory in the dying seconds. But a false-start penalty pushed them back to fourth-and-one at the one, then to fourth-and-six, and with four seconds left Malcolm Roach sacked Mahomes for a six-yard loss. The ball, the game and first place in the AFC West all belonged to Denver.

Broncos Beat Chiefs: How the Fourth Quarter Turned

The scoring summary tells the story of a game that changed shape late. Denver opened the scoring through a 39-yard Wil Lutz field goal, before Mahomes hit Rashee Rice for an 11-yard touchdown. Lutz added a 45-yard field goal early in the second quarter, Mahomes answered with a 73-yard strike to an open receiver, and Nix found Waddle for a one-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal with 1:15 left in the half. Butker's 45-yard field goal on the final play of the half made it 17-13 to Kansas City.

The third quarter belonged entirely to the Chiefs. Gray's touchdown extended the lead to 11 points, and Denver managed only nine plays in the period while Nix's passing total sat at just 138 yards. The Broncos' running game, which had been quiet all afternoon, offered almost nothing, and Kansas City outgained Denver 401 yards to 294 over the full game.

What Denver did have was timing. The 80-yard fourth-quarter drive was its first sustained answer of the second half, and both of Nix's touchdown passes came when the Broncos had to score — on fourth down, at the goal line, with no margin left. The Adkins touchdown was a near-copy of the Waddle touchdown from the second quarter: short, precise, and taken under maximum pressure.

Background: Revenge for Week 1, and the AFC West Race

This was not just any divisional game. Kansas City had beaten Denver 31-10 on Monday Night Football in Week 1 at Arrowhead Stadium, a game in which Mahomes threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Kenneth Walker III rushed for 173 yards and two scores in his Chiefs debut. Denver had waited eight weeks for the rematch, and it arrived with the division lead at stake.

The Broncos entered Sunday at 5-2 and the Chiefs at 5-1, with Kansas City already past its bye week. A Denver win therefore carried a double reward: revenge for the season opener, and outright first place in the AFC West at 6-2, with Kansas City dropping to 5-2. In a division where the tie-breakers and head-to-head results may matter in January, the swing was enormous — from a potential two-game gap behind Kansas City to a one-game lead over them.

The wider context matters too. Kansas City had lost the previous week in prime time to Seattle, and arrived in Denver trying to steady a season that had suddenly looked less inevitable. Denver, by contrast, had built its record on defence and patience, and Sunday was the first time this season its offence had to win a game in the final minutes against the league's most feared quarterback — and did.

Reactions and Quotes

There were no lengthy post-game speeches in the first reports from Denver, and this article does not invent any. What the record does show is the reaction on the field and in the stands: a stadium that had booed in the third quarter roaring as Waddle secured the two-point conversion, and a Denver sideline celebrating a goal-line stand that ended with Roach's sack as the clock hit four seconds.

The live reporting captured the shift in real time. Broncos reporters described the Coleman touchdown as the moment Mile High believed again, while Chiefs reporters noted the same sequence from the other side: a four-point deficit inside the two-minute warning, and a final drive that reached the Denver goal line but could not cross it. The defining image of the night was not a touchdown at all, but a quarterback on the ground at the six-yard line, with Denver defenders celebrating around him.

Denver also had to win without one of its defensive leaders. Safety Brandon Jones was ruled out during the game with a hamstring injury after making three tackles; he had entered the game with 31 tackles and two interceptions on the season, and his absence was felt as Mahomes moved the ball late. That the Broncos still held at the goal line, without Jones, made the final stand more remarkable, not less.

Why It Matters

First, the standings. Denver is now alone at the top of the AFC West at 6-2, with the head-to-head tie-breaker over Kansas City in its pocket for the return fixture. Kansas City, at 5-2, is no longer setting the pace in its own division, and its margin for error in the race for a home playoff game has narrowed sharply.

Second, the quarterback question. Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards, three touchdowns and a 120.1 passer rating — and lost. Nix finished 20 of 32 for 222 yards, two touchdowns and a 103.9 rating — and won, because his two best throws came on fourth down at the goal line. Games like this change how a young quarterback is talked about, and Nix's composure on both fourth-and-goal plays will follow him into the rest of the season.

Third, the rookie. Coleman, designated for return from injured reserve in October, finished with 104 total yards on 15 touches, including the 51-yard reception that set up his own winning touchdown and 41 rushing yards on 11 carries. In a backfield still finding its shape after injuries and trade speculation around the league, Coleman gave Denver a second-half weapon it had lacked all afternoon — and did it in the biggest moments.

Finally, the psychology. Denver had lost the opener by 21 points, trailed by 11 in the fourth quarter at home, and still won. Teams carry games like that with them. Kansas City, meanwhile, must now answer a different kind of question: how a team that outgained its opponent by more than 100 yards, committed no turnovers on offence in the passing game, and led for almost the entire afternoon, left Denver with nothing.

What Happens Next

Denver takes its 6-2 record and its division lead into Week 10 preparations, with the immediate priority likely to be the fitness of Brandon Jones and the form of a running game that produced only 77 rushing yards against Kansas City despite Coleman's late burst. The Broncos will also know that the return game against Kansas City, and the rest of the AFC West schedule, now carries even greater weight — they have given themselves something to defend.

Kansas City, at 5-2, will regroup around a familiar formula: Mahomes, Walker — who carried 21 times for 69 yards on Sunday — and a receiving group led by Rice, who caught seven passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs' concern will be the other side of the ball: a defence that allowed 15 fourth-quarter points, missed a field goal that could have changed the final drive, and could not get off the field on Denver's two decisive fourth-quarter possessions.

For neutral fans, the immediate next act is Sunday Night Football, with Philadelphia at Washington closing Week 8, and then Monday Night Football between Seattle and Chicago. But the game of the weekend is already decided, and it will be replayed all week in Denver: the 51-yard catch, the five-yard run, and the sack with four seconds left.
