Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has described Sunday's Learjet crash in Greenacres as "cataclysmic," as about 600 people were evacuated from the community next to the crash site and federal investigators prepared to take over the scene. The Greenacres Learjet crash evening briefing, held near the site on Sunday, November 1, 2026, is the first official account of the aftermath on the ground — the crater, the debris field and the displaced residents — since officials confirmed that all nine people aboard the jet were killed.

Speaking near the scene, DeSantis said there were no reports of anyone on the ground having been killed or injured, a point that will come as a relief to a neighbourhood that watched a business jet fall from the sky into a mobile home community in the early afternoon. But he left no doubt about the scale of the destruction, telling reporters: "Obviously, this was a cataclysmic plane crash. It looked like a missile going down, it left a big crater on the side of the road."

Key Points

• Gov. Ron DeSantis called the Greenacres Learjet crash "cataclysmic" at a Sunday-evening press conference near the scene.
• About 600 people in the community next to the crash site were evacuated and need shelter and food overnight, county officials said.
• There were no reports of anyone on the ground killed or injured as of Sunday evening, DeSantis said.
• All nine people aboard the Learjet 60 were killed, a toll confirmed earlier on Sunday by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
• The NTSB go-team was expected to arrive Sunday night and Monday morning to lead the investigation, with the FAA also investigating.

What Happened

The Learjet 60 crashed at about 12:50 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the area of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, near Cresthaven Boulevard, in an unincorporated area near Greenacres and Palm Springs in Palm Beach County, Florida. The jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It came down in a mobile home neighbourhood, sparking several fires and scattering debris across a wide area.

At his Sunday-evening briefing, DeSantis said the jet's impact left debris strewn over a "significant distance" and a large crater beside the road. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office closed all lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and urged motorists to avoid the area. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office broadcast the governor's afternoon news conference on its Facebook page.

County Commissioner Joel Flores, who represents the Palm Springs area and attended the news conference, said his first concern was the evacuated residents. "Right now our priority is evacuating the adjacent community right behind. We have about 600 people that we have to make sure have shelter tonight, food," Flores said. He added that nearby businesses would be "shut down for the near future." County Administrator Joe Abruzzo, also appearing with DeSantis, said the county would submit an emergency declaration to the governor to help deal with the aftermath.

Background/Context

This site has reported the crash three times already: first on Sunday afternoon, when Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared a mass casualty incident and the toll was still unconfirmed; then when the FAA confirmed the aircraft was a Learjet 60 with nine people aboard and tracking data showed a descent of 27,000 feet in one minute before the signal cut off; and then when Secretary Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard were killed. Sunday evening's briefing is a further step, not a repeat of those reports, because it supplies the first official account of the ground aftermath — the evacuation, the crater, the emergency declaration and the NTSB team's arrival.

The weather at the time of the crash was stormy. Afternoon storms covered much of South Florida, with gusts of wind near 25 mph and patches of lightning, and AccuWeather meteorologists estimated rainfall rates of roughly 0.25 inches per hour in the crash area. Earlier official accounts described overcast skies with rain and lightning, east winds of 15 mph gusting near 25 mph, and visibility of seven miles. Investigators have not said whether weather played any role, and the cause of the crash remains unknown.

The crash site sits about four miles south of West Palm Beach airport, and President Donald Trump had departed Palm Beach on Air Force One a little over an hour before the crash, on his way to campaign rallies in Iowa and Kansas. The jet's occupants have not been publicly identified: as of 7 p.m. on Sunday, the FAA had not identified anyone aboard, and the victims' names had not been released.

Greenacres Learjet Crash: Evacuation and Emergency Response

The evacuation is the most urgent human consequence of the crash beyond the nine deaths aboard the jet. About 600 people live in the community immediately behind the crash site, and officials said they must be given shelter and food for the night while debris is cleared and the area is made safe. Commissioner Flores framed that as the county's top priority on Sunday evening, ahead of the investigation itself.

The emergency declaration that County Administrator Abruzzo said the county would submit to the governor is the formal step that unlocks state assistance for that effort — temporary shelter, debris removal and support for displaced residents and shuttered businesses. It also signals that local officials expect the disruption to last beyond Sunday night: Military Trail remains closed, the debris field is extensive, and federal investigators will need the site preserved for examination.

State Representative Debra Tendrich, who was at the scene, said fire rescue crews responded "immediately" and had "done an incredible job." Palm Beach County Fire Rescue had initially declared the crash a mass casualty incident on Sunday afternoon, before the toll aboard the jet was confirmed and before it became clear that no one on the ground had been reported killed or injured.

Reactions/Quotes

Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters near the scene: "Obviously, this was a cataclysmic plane crash. It looked like a missile going down, it left a big crater on the side of the road." He added: "As of now, we don't have any reports of anyone who was on the ground, apart from the people in the plane, who were killed or injured as a result of debris."

Commissioner Joel Flores said: "Right now our priority is evacuating the adjacent community right behind. We have about 600 people that we have to make sure have shelter tonight, food." County Administrator Joe Abruzzo said the county would submit an emergency declaration to the governor to help deal with the aftermath.

Earlier on Sunday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed on social media that all nine people on board the jet had died, calling the crash a "horrific tragedy." The National Transportation Safety Board said it has initiated a go-team to arrive on the scene on Sunday night and Monday morning, and the NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates.

Why It Matters

The evening briefing answers the question that hung over the first hours of coverage: what happened to the people on the ground? A jet falling into a mobile home community could easily have killed residents as well as everyone aboard. The governor's statement that no ground deaths or injuries had been reported, combined with the evacuation of 600 neighbours, gives the clearest picture yet of a disaster whose human cost, while terrible, was contained to the aircraft itself.

The crash also raises the questions the NTSB go-team will now have to answer. A Learjet 60 descending 27,000 feet in one minute before tracking cut off, in stormy weather, with a crater and debris spread over a significant distance, points to a violent, high-energy impact — but investigators have said nothing about the cause, and it would be wrong to speculate. Mechanical failure, weather, pilot incapacitation and other factors are all routinely examined in such investigations, and the NTSB's preliminary findings will take time.

For the evacuated residents and the shuttered businesses near Military Trail, the emergency declaration and the shelter effort are the immediate story. Hundreds of people face at least one night away from home, in a community that was already dealing with storm damage across South Florida on Sunday.

What Happens Next

The NTSB go-team's arrival on Sunday night and Monday morning marks the start of the formal investigation. Investigators will document the crater and debris field, recover the flight recorders if fitted and retrievable, examine the wreckage, and pull radar, weather and air-traffic-control records. The FAA is also investigating, but the NTSB is in charge and will provide updates.

Victim identifications are expected to follow once next of kin have been notified; as of Sunday evening, no names had been released. Military Trail will remain closed until further notice, and the evacuation will continue until officials declare the area safe. A further update is expected when the NTSB gives its first on-scene briefing, and this site will report it as a new development.
