Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, November 1, 2026, ending a six-plus-season tenure that rose to an Atlantic Coast Conference title in 2023 and then collapsed into one of the worst stretches in programme history, the university announced.

Key Points

• Florida State fired Mike Norvell on Sunday, November 1, 2026, roughly 12 hours after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson left the Seminoles 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the ACC.
• Norvell finishes 41-39 overall and 23-30 in ACC play at Florida State. The loss to Clemson was the Seminoles' 17th defeat in their past 21 conference games.
• Rick Stockstill, 68, a former Florida State quarterback and the programme's director of scouting for offense, was named interim head coach.
• Norvell's buyout is reported at roughly $47 million to $50.3 million, among the largest in college football history, under a contract running through the 2031 season.
• Florida State said a thorough national search for a permanent successor is under way immediately. The Seminoles visit Boston College on Saturday, November 7.

What Happened

The announcement came on Sunday afternoon, after a day of meetings at Florida State's football facility. University president Richard McCullough informed Norvell that the school was making a change in the leadership of the football programme, effective immediately, the university said in a statement posted by FSU Football. Defensive coordinator Tony White and safeties coach Evan Cooper were also fired on Sunday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat's live coverage.

McCullough's statement was short and formal. "We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program," he said. "We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best. We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program. We are confident in Rick Stockstill's ability to provide steady leadership during this transition. We will conduct a thorough national search for the program's next leader, someone who embraces Florida State's tradition of championship athletics and our standard of excellence."

According to USA TODAY's account, Norvell arrived at the football facility on Sunday with members of his coaching staff, and a team meeting had been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. The news broke late on Sunday afternoon, moments before that meeting, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. McCullough and interim athletic director Bruce Warwick were scheduled to meet the media at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday to discuss the firing and what comes next.

The timing left no doubt about the trigger. Florida State had lost 36-24 at home to Clemson on Saturday, October 31, a game in which, according to FSU Wire, the Seminoles could not capitalise defensively against a struggling Clemson offense. A banner calling for Norvell's firing was flown above the stadium during that game, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. The defeat was Florida State's third in a row, and it left the Seminoles needing to win three of their final four games — against Boston College, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State and Florida — to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2023.

Florida State Fires Mike Norvell: The Buyout and the Record

Money did not save Norvell, and the cost of removing him is enormous. Norvell signed an eight-year, $84 million extension after leading Florida State to a 13-1 record and the ACC title in 2023, according to Field Level Media. His contract reportedly calls for him to be paid 85 percent of the value of his remaining deal, which runs through the 2031 season. NBC Sports put the buyout at roughly $47 million, while USA TODAY and Field Level Media put it at approximately $50.3 million. The difference reflects how the remaining salary and mitigation are calculated, but on either figure it ranks among the largest buyouts in college football history. A duty-to-mitigate clause, under which money Norvell earns in a future job can reduce what Florida State owes, could lower the final figure.

The record explains why Florida State was willing to pay it. Norvell arrived with a reputation as an offensive innovator, and in 2023 he delivered: 13 wins, an ACC championship, and a team that finished the regular season unbeaten before being left out of the College Football Playoff. That snub, painful as it was, did not break the programme. What followed did. In 2024 Florida State went 2-10, the worst record in school history. The Seminoles have not recovered since. They are 3-5 in 2026, 1-4 in the ACC, and 17 defeats in their past 21 conference games tells the story of a programme that has gone from conference champion to conference bottom-feeder in less than three years.

Norvell's overall record, 41-39 with a 23-30 mark in ACC play, looks respectable only until it is split in two. The 2023 season accounts for 13 of those wins. Remove it, and the rest of the tenure is a losing record built on a historic collapse. That is why the Clemson loss, unremarkable in isolation, became the final straw: it was not one bad Saturday, but the latest in a pattern that Florida State's leadership, its fans and, visibly, the banner over the stadium had decided could not continue.

Background: From Bowden to the Fall

Florida State is not a programme accustomed to patience with mediocrity. Under the late Bobby Bowden, the Seminoles won national championships in 1993 and 1999 and played in an era when Doak Campbell Stadium was one of the hardest places to visit in college football. The programme's modern standard was set again in 2013, when Jameis Winston led an unbeaten team to a national title. Norvell was hired to restore that standard after the short, troubled tenures that followed Jimbo Fisher's departure, and for one season, in 2023, he appeared to have done it.

The fall since then has been unusually steep, and unusually public. The 2-10 season in 2024 was not a rebuilding year in the usual sense; it was a collapse by a team that had just gone 13-1. Recruiting, development, quarterback play and defensive consistency have all been questioned at different points, and the athletic department itself has been in flux: athletic director Michael Alford parted ways with the university in September, leaving Warwick as interim athletic director to oversee, with McCullough, the search for a new coach.

That context matters for the search that now begins. Florida State is not hiring a coach for a stable programme that needs a nudge. It is hiring a coach to rebuild a roster, a staff and a culture, while paying a former coach tens of millions of dollars not to coach, and while its remaining schedule offers a narrow path to a bowl game. The next coach will inherit a programme with history, facilities and a fan base that expects championships — and with a recent record that says how far it has fallen from them.

Reactions

McCullough's statement thanked Norvell and wished his family well, and expressed confidence in Stockstill. Warwick, speaking in the Tallahassee Democrat's live coverage of the Sunday media session, said Stockstill is an experienced former head coach who will provide stability, and said there were multiple candidates considered for the interim role, mentioning Tom Herman as one potential interim coach before Stockstill was picked.

Reaction from fans and former players was swift and, in large part, unsurprised. The banner over the stadium on Saturday was the most visible sign of a fan base that had turned, and social media on Sunday reflected relief as much as sadness: gratitude for 2023, frustration at what followed, and debate about who should lead the rebuild. Norvell himself has not issued a public statement in the reporting checked for this article.

Within the programme, the immediate reaction is practical. Stockstill, a Florida State Hall of Fame member who played quarterback for the Seminoles under Bowden from 1977 to 1981, must prepare a 3-5 team for a road game at Boston College in less than a week, with a new defensive staff structure after White's departure, and with players who have just learned that their head coach has been fired mid-season. His experience — 18 seasons as head coach at Middle Tennessee State from 2006 to 2023, with four bowl wins, and two seasons on Florida State's staff as director of scouting for offense — is the reason the university chose him over a younger assistant.

Why It Matters

It matters because Florida State is one of college football's brand-name programmes, and a mid-season firing with a roughly $50 million buyout is a statement about how far the sport's economics and expectations have moved. A decade ago, a buyout of this size would have been unthinkable for a coach with a conference title on his record three years earlier. Now it is the price of admitting that a rebuild has failed, and Florida State's willingness to pay it will be watched by every other programme weighing a similar decision.

It matters for the ACC, too. Florida State has been at the centre of the conference's recent tensions over revenue and competitiveness, and a Seminoles programme that cannot win conference games weakens the league's football product. A successful rebuild would restore one of the ACC's marquee teams; a failed search would deepen the conference's problems.

And it matters for the players. The Seminoles still have four games left, and a bowl game is still mathematically possible. Stockstill's task is to hold a locker room together through a coaching change, to give seniors a dignified finish, and to give younger players a reason to stay through a search that will inevitably bring rumours about transfers and a new staff. How he handles this week, starting at Boston College on November 7 at noon ET, will set the tone for the rest of the season.

What Happens Next

Stockstill will lead Florida State for the final four games, starting at Boston College on Saturday, November 7. The Seminoles then face Pittsburgh, North Carolina State and Florida, and must win three of the four to become bowl eligible. That is a demanding ask for an interim coach with a new defensive leadership structure, but it is also the clearest measure of whether the team responds to the change.

Meanwhile, McCullough and Warwick will run a national search for a permanent head coach. No timetable has been announced, and no candidate has been confirmed as a finalist in the reporting checked for this article. The search will be conducted while Norvell's buyout is paid down and while the programme's roster decisions — including who stays, who enters the transfer portal, and who signs in the next recruiting cycle — hang in the balance.

Any announcement of a permanent coach, a further staff change, or a decision on Norvell's future employment that affects the buyout would be a new development, and this site will report it when Florida State announces it.
