The Chicago Bears take the NFL's best running game into one of its toughest road tests on Monday night, when they visit the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field in Week 8. What Happened

Week 8 closes under the lights in Seattle, where the Seahawks return home as defending champions looking to build on the most impressive defensive performance of the season so far. Seattle held Patrick Mahomes and the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs to just three points in Week 7, and did not allow Kansas City a single red-zone trip, the first time that has happened in Mahomes' career. The Seahawks now sit half a game back of the final NFC wild-card spot, and a win over a 5-2 Chicago side would be a statement that the champions are rounding into form at the midpoint of the season.

Chicago, meanwhile, is playing the second of three straight prime-time games and is chasing a 6-2 start. The Bears have won two in a row behind an offence averaging 25.7 points per game and 390.7 total yards per game, converting 44 percent of third downs and 53.3 percent of red-zone trips. They have also been rewarded by bettors, covering the spread in five of their seven games. Seattle, by contrast, has won two of its three home games and is favoured by a field goal despite heavy public interest in the road underdog, according to betting-market reports.

The forecast offers no excuses for either side. Temperatures in Seattle on Monday night are expected to be around 50 degrees, with only a 1 percent chance of rain and weak winds of around 2 mph, so the game should be decided by execution rather than conditions.

Background and Context

Chicago's rise has been built on the ground. The Bears average a league-best 154 rushing yards per game, and D'Andre Swift carries the load with Kyle Monangai sidelined. The club also reshaped its defensive front at the trade deadline, acquiring All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans on October 29 for two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick, with a fifth-round pick coming back to Chicago. The move signalled that the Bears, coached by Ben Johnson, believe their window is open now, not at some distant point in a rebuild.

Seattle's identity is the opposite side of the ball. Coached by Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks lead the NFL against the pass at just 144 yards allowed per game and rank fourth in scoring defence at 17.9 points per game. Their run defence allows only 3.5 yards per carry, the second-best mark in the league, and the 36-game streak without allowing a 100-yard rusher is one of the longest active runs in the NFL. The Seahawks have also bolstered their offensive line with All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson, and running back Zach Charbonnet is expected to make his 2026 season debut after returning from injury, with rookie Jadarian Price also available if Seattle activates him from injured reserve before kickoff.

Seattle's passing game runs through Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who has been arguably the most valuable receiver to his offence in football this season. According to Sumer Sports data cited in pre-game analysis, Smith-Njigba holds an 80 percent EPA share across his best 27-game stretch, ranking first among 141 qualified receivers. Opta AI projections give him 105.01 receiving yards for Monday night, above his betting line of 97.5 yards, a line he has gone over in six of seven games this season.

Bears vs Seahawks: Three Battles That Will Decide It

The first battle is Chicago's rushing attack against Seattle's front seven. The Bears want to control the clock, stay ahead of the chains and keep Sam Darnold on the sideline. Seattle wants the opposite: force Chicago into obvious passing downs, where its pass rush and league-leading pass defence can take over. If Swift averages anything close to Chicago's season numbers, the Bears can dictate the tempo. If Seattle holds Chicago to its 3.5-yards-per-carry average, the visitors will be playing uphill all night.

The second battle is Caleb Williams against a defence that has humbled better quarterbacks. No passer has thrown for more than 189 yards against Seattle this season, a list that now includes Mahomes. Williams must get the ball out quickly, use his legs when lanes open and avoid the turnover that has undone so many Seattle opponents. The Bears' plan will lean on play-action off the run game, but play-action only works if the run game is working first.

The third battle is Smith-Njigba against a Chicago secondary that cannot afford to let him take over the game. Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold has been at his best when he can feed his star receiver early and let the offence build rhythm. Chicago's best answer is pressure: as pre-game analysis has noted, Darnold can be forced into mistakes when the pocket collapses, so getting home with four rushers, with Simmons now in the middle of the Bears front, may be Chicago's most important defensive task.

Reactions and Quotes

Analysts are split on Monday night, which fits a game with a three-point spread and a 46.5 total. VSiN's preview backs Seattle minus the points, while Covers analyst Josh Inglis leans to the under, arguing that Seattle's defence is expected to dictate the pace. The case for the under is straightforward: Seattle has held opponents to 17.9 points per game, has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 36 games and has kept every quarterback under 189 passing yards this season.

Score predictions from preview outlets underline how close this game is expected to be. One Seattle-focused preview projects a 31-26 Seahawks win, built on Darnold avoiding turnovers and Smith-Njigba having a big night. A Chicago-focused preview goes the other way, projecting a 27-24 Bears win with the turnover battle as the difference. Neither side is expecting a blowout, and both previews agree on the central question: can Chicago run the ball against a defence that has refused to let anyone run on it?

Why It Matters

Monday night matters because both teams are playing for playoff position, not just pride. A Chicago win would move the Bears to 6-2, keep them in control of their NFC North fate and validate the aggressive Simmons trade as a win-now move. A Seattle win would lift the defending champions to 5-3, strengthen their wild-card position and confirm that the Kansas City performance was a turning point rather than a one-off.

It also matters as a measuring stick. Chicago's offence has feasted on weaker defences during its winning streak; Seattle's defence is the best it has faced. If the Bears can run the ball and score in the twenties or thirties against this unit, they will have to be taken seriously as a January team. If Seattle shuts them down, the conversation around Chicago will cool quickly, and the Seahawks will re-enter the Super Bowl conversation on the back of their defence.

What Happens Next

Both teams will announce their inactive lists 90 minutes before kickoff, which will confirm whether Price is activated for Seattle and which questionable players suit up. The game will be followed by a full result and reaction story, with the winning team's path to the play-offs and the losing team's fixes under the microscope. Chicago's Monday night schedule does not ease up: this is the second of three straight prime-time games, so the Bears will remain in the national spotlight whatever happens in Seattle.
