The United States struck Iran's Qeshm Island in a secret raid reported overnight into Tuesday, according to the Wall Street Journal, in what US officials described as the latest in a series of limited strikes aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz. The reported US strikes on Qeshm Island landed just as President Donald Trump was publicly playing down the prospect of renewed war with Iran and talking up the chances of a diplomatic settlement, creating a striking contrast between the White House's public message and the reported military action. US Central Command did not immediately comment on the report, and Iranian authorities had not confirmed the cause of the explosions reported on the island, leaving the most important details — what was hit, and with what effect — still unconfirmed in the first hours after the news broke.

Key Points

• The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, that the United States struck Qeshm Island, describing it as part of a series of limited strikes in recent weeks.
• Iran's state news agency IRNA reported at least five explosions on Qeshm Island, with blasts also heard in the nearby port city of Bandar Lengeh.
• US Central Command did not immediately comment, and Iranian authorities had not established the cause of the explosions or confirmed a military strike.
• President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was not considering resuming attacks after the midterm elections and that a deal with Iran "could happen".
• Qeshm Island sits at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes, and has been repeatedly targeted since the war began.

What Happened

According to the Wall Street Journal report, carried by Haaretz and the New York Post, the strike took place on Monday, with the news emerging overnight into Tuesday. US officials told the Journal that the attack was part of a series of limited strikes Washington has carried out against Iran in recent weeks, which the officials described as defensive in nature. The stated aim, according to the reporting, was securing the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes.

Iranian state media gave the first on-the-ground account of the explosions. IRNA reported that five explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, and the Iranian news agency Fars later reported explosions in Bandar Lengeh, west of the island and near the Strait of Hormuz. Residents reportedly spotted two aircraft flying over the island, and videos circulating on social media showed air raid sirens sounding across the island, followed by loud explosions. Initial reports suggested that an air defence installation on the island could have been targeted, but there was no official confirmation of that claim, and neither American nor Israeli involvement had been established by Iranian authorities at the time of reporting.

Background: A War Fought in the Shadows of the Strait

Qeshm Island is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, and its position makes it strategically vital. It sits close to the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint between Iran and Oman through which tankers carry oil from Gulf producers to the rest of the world. Control of, or disruption to, that waterway has been a central thread of the US-Iran confrontation for months, with commercial shipping, naval blockades and tanker attacks all featuring in the conflict.

US Strikes Qeshm Island: What We Know and What Remains Unconfirmed

What is firmly established is narrow: a respected American newspaper, citing US officials, has reported a US strike on Qeshm Island as part of a series of recent limited strikes, and Iranian state media has reported multiple explosions on the island and in Bandar Lengeh on the same day. What is not established is almost everything else. The precise target, the weapons used, the extent of any damage, and whether anyone was killed or injured all remain unconfirmed. US Central Command's silence so far means there is no official American account to test the Journal's reporting against, and Iran's own statements have stopped short of confirming a military strike or identifying an attacker.

Reactions and Quotes

President Trump, speaking on Monday before the strike report emerged, sought to lower the temperature. He told reporters that he was not considering resuming attacks after the elections, and he suggested that a diplomatic agreement with Tehran remained possible. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, he wrote that Iran wanted a settlement as soon as possible. "Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!" he wrote, linking the prospect of an agreement to falling oil prices. "Oil Prices are DROPPING LIKE A ROCK, down almost $10 a Barrel, A RECORD, because people feel that there will not be a War with Iran," he added.

Vice President JD Vance struck a similar note on Monday, telling reporters that Washington was seeing some progress in the ongoing negotiations. "We've certainly made some progress. We'll see if we can make some more," Vance said. The diplomatic track, according to recent reporting, has been moving in parallel with the military one: Iranian negotiators left Qatari-mediated talks in Doha on Sunday, a draft US deal proposal is circulating, and Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if Washington accepts its conditions — ending hostilities on all fronts, releasing frozen Iranian assets, removing oil-related sanctions and lifting the US blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the two-day offer as a sign of good faith, condensed from a seven-day plan presented in September.

Why It Matters

The timing is the first reason this report matters. It emerged on the eve of the US midterm elections, when control of Congress for the final two years of Trump's second term is at stake, and when the president's own public message has been that war with Iran is receding and a deal is possible. A confirmed strike on Iranian territory in that window would complicate that message, energise the debate over the president's Iran policy, and give both parties a fresh set of facts to argue over in the final hours of campaigning.

The second reason is the Strait of Hormuz itself. Any military action near the waterway carries an outsized economic risk, because oil markets react to Hormuz headlines faster than to almost any other geopolitical signal. Trump himself made that link on Monday, crediting expectations of no war with a sharp fall in oil prices. A confirmed strike could reverse that sentiment just as quickly, and the fact that the reported strike coincided with a diplomatic offer to reopen the Strait within two days underlines how tightly the military and economic tracks are intertwined.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is official: a statement, or continued silence, from US Central Command and the Pentagon, and a fuller account from Tehran about what caused the explosions on Qeshm and in Bandar Lengeh. Either would sharpen a story that currently rests on a single newspaper report and Iranian media accounts of blasts. Satellite imagery, shipping data and any Iranian damage reports will also help establish what, if anything, was hit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Qeshm Island and why does it matter? Qeshm is Iran's largest island, at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route. It hosts a naval base, a desalination plant and, according to the New York Post, ballistic missile storage facilities.

What did Iranian media report? IRNA reported at least five explosions on Qeshm Island, Fars reported blasts in Bandar Lengeh, residents reported seeing two aircraft, and videos showed air raid sirens followed by explosions. The cause was not established.

What did President Trump say about Iran on Monday? Trump said he was not considering resuming attacks after the elections, said a deal "could happen", and wrote on Truth Social that Iran wanted a settlement as soon as possible.
