A 25-year-old woman working at a Walmart store in Hammond, Indiana, was shot and killed on Monday morning after an argument with an 18-year-old male co-worker turned physical inside the store, police said. Officers were called shortly after 9 a.m. to the Walmart North Supercenter at 1100 5th Avenue, just across the Indiana state line from Chicago, where an off-duty Hammond officer working store security reported the shooting. The suspect was taken into custody at the store, police said there was no ongoing threat to the public, and the store remained closed for the rest of Monday.

What Happened

According to Hammond police accounts reported by Fox 32 Chicago and NBC Chicago, a male suspect was speaking with a female employee inside the store when the encounter turned physical. Police said the suspect then produced a firearm and shot the employee multiple times. She died from her injuries. The shooting took place just after 9 a.m. inside the Walmart Supercenter at 1100 5th Avenue, a store that had opened to customers at 6 a.m., according to NBC Chicago.

The response was fast because help was already in the building. An off-duty Hammond police officer working security at Walmart North reported the shooting, and officers responded around 9:09 a.m. The large police response that followed included the Hammond Fire Department and the Lake County Coroner, NBC Chicago reported. Police said the teenage gunman then walked a few aisles over, put his gun down and waited for officers to arrest him. He was taken into custody at the store.

Police have not publicly established a motive, and the account of events remains preliminary. Reports differ slightly on whether the two knew each other outside work, and on the exact nature of their relationship, so this article does not go beyond what police have said: the two were co-workers, they were speaking at a counter, the conversation became an argument and then a physical confrontation, and the man then shot the woman. No customers were injured, according to police updates summarised in local reporting, and investigators concluded the shooting was isolated.

Background: A Store, a Shift and a Community Shock

Hammond is a city in Lake County in north-west Indiana, on the border with Illinois and a short drive from Chicago. Its Walmart North store on 5th Avenue is a large neighbourhood supercenter, the kind of store where workers and shoppers cross paths every day and where a morning shift normally means stocking, tills and customers, not a police cordon. That ordinariness is part of why the killing has shaken co-workers and residents: it happened at work, in daylight, in a place people visit without thinking twice.

Hammond Walmart Shooting: What Police Have Confirmed

Hammond police Captain Steve Kellogg gave the core account in a statement reported by NBC Chicago: the shooting took place just after 9 a.m. inside the Walmart North Supercenter at 1100 5th Avenue, an off-duty officer working store security reported it, and a suspect was in custody. Fox 32 Chicago reported the same sequence: officers responded to Walmart North around 9:09 a.m., the male suspect had been speaking with a female employee when the encounter turned physical, and police said he then shot her multiple times.

The Hammond Police Department also issued a statement of condolence, reported by Fox 32: "The Hammond Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends, and coworkers." Walmart issued its own statement to NBC Chicago: "We're heartbroken by what's happened at our Hammond, IN store. We're working closely with authorities as they continue investigating." Neither statement added new facts about motive or charges, and both pointed to the same next step: let the investigation run.

Police were clear on public safety. They said they believed the shooting was an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. That assessment matters for shoppers and for neighbouring businesses: it means police were not searching for a second suspect or warning of a wider danger, but were instead securing one scene, interviewing witnesses and preserving evidence inside one store.

Reactions and Quotes

The two official statements set the tone for the day. From Hammond police came condolence and restraint: condolences to family, friends and co-workers, and a promise that additional information would be released as it became available. From Walmart came grief and cooperation: heartbreak at what happened at its Hammond store, and close work with authorities as the investigation continues.

There has been no statement, in the sources read, from the victim's family, and none should be expected immediately. Families in the first hours after a killing are dealing with notification, identification and funeral arrangements, not with the news cycle. Co-workers, too, have not spoken on the record in the reporting read for this article, beyond the fact that the store closed and staff were sent home. That silence is normal, and it should be respected.

Why It Matters

A single killing at work matters first because a life was lost. A 25-year-old woman went to work on a Monday morning and did not come home. That fact, on its own, is the story, and it deserves to be reported without sensational detail. The manner of her death — shot multiple times by a co-worker after an argument, according to police — makes it a workplace homicide, a category that raises questions every employer and every worker recognises: how did a firearm get into the store, what happened in the minutes before the shots, and what, if anything, could have stopped it.

The case also matters because it happened in a public, everyday place. Walmart stores are among the most visited retail spaces in America, and a shooting inside one, even an isolated one, affects how shoppers and workers feel about safety at work and in public. Police reassurance that there is no ongoing threat is therefore not a footnote; it is the information the surrounding community most needs in the first hours.

What Happens Next

Detectives will continue interviewing witnesses, including staff who were in the store, reviewing any available surveillance video, and examining the firearm recovered at the scene. The Lake County Coroner's office will complete its formal work on identification and cause of death. Police said they will release additional information as it becomes available, and that is the next confirmed milestone to watch for.

A charging decision will come from prosecutors after they review the police file. Until then, the suspect's custody status beyond his arrest at the store, and any court date, remain unreported in the sources read. Readers should be cautious about social-media claims filling that gap: names, motives and charges circulating online before police confirm them have, in cases like this, often proved wrong or incomplete.
