The San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 119-97 on Monday night at Frost Bank Center, turning a fast start into a comfortable rout and extending their winning streak to five games. Dylan Harper scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack in which all five San Antonio starters reached double figures, and the Spurs improved to 5-2 while Utah fell to 1-6 after a fifth straight defeat.

• Stephon Castle added 16 points, Keldon Johnson scored 15 off the bench, and Victor Wembanyama had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

• The win was San Antonio's second over Utah in six days and its fifth in a row after an 0-2 start.

What Happened

San Antonio stamped its authority on the game early. The Spurs opened up a 16-point lead late in the first quarter, when a Luke Kornet reverse layup with 2:15 remaining made it 27-16, and Utah never recovered. The Jazz managed only 16 points in the opening period on 7-for-26 shooting, a season low for Utah in a quarter and a season best for San Antonio defensively in a first period. The Spurs still led by 10 at half-time, 59-49, and then broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Utah 35-20. Wembanyama scored San Antonio's final six points of that period, including a dunk off a lob from De'Aaron Fox with three seconds left, to make it 94-69. Wembanyama went to the bench two minutes into the fourth quarter, with the rest of the starters soon following, as the Spurs cruised home.

Background: A Streak Built on Balance

The result continued a remarkable turnaround for San Antonio, which started the season 0-2 and has now won five in a row. Wembanyama has averaged 28.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.0 blocks during the winning streak, but Monday showed why this run is about more than one player. Seven Spurs scored in double figures, the starters all reached double digits, and the bench added punch through Johnson's 15 points. San Antonio also held an opponent below 100 points for the first time this season, a defensive milestone that mattered as much as the scoring. Utah, by contrast, has now lost five consecutive games and six of its first seven outings, and shot just 35.4 percent from the field on Monday. The Jazz also lost the fast-break battle 26-9 and were outscored 52-36 in the paint, numbers that tell the story of a team beaten for pace and physicality as well as for shot-making.

Spurs Beat Jazz Behind Harper's All-Round Night

Harper's 17 points came on efficient shooting, and his eight assists and seven rebounds underlined an all-round contribution that set the tone. Castle's 16 points gave San Antonio a second perimeter threat, Johnson's 15 off the bench kept the pressure on when the starters rested, and Wembanyama, even on a quiet scoring night by his recent standards, still produced 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. That balance is the point: when Wembanyama's scoring was not needed, Harper, Castle and Johnson carried the offence, and when Utah tried to respond, San Antonio's defence held firm. The third quarter was the clearest example, with Harper, Castle, Wembanyama and Fox scoring six points apiece as the Spurs stretched a 10-point half-time lead to 25. For Utah, Markkanen's 22 points and eight rebounds led the way, and Peterson's 14 points offered a bright spot, but the Jazz could not find a second scorer to change the game, and their shooting never recovered from that cold first quarter.

Reactions and Quotes

No post-game quotes were included in the reports read for this article, so this section records what the result itself says rather than inventing words for either camp. For San Antonio, the talking point is the depth of the win: a fifth straight victory achieved without needing a huge night from Wembanyama, with the starters able to sit early in the fourth quarter of a rout. For Utah, the concern is the pattern of the defeat: a slow start, a third-quarter collapse and a fifth straight loss, with Markkanen again carrying the scoring load. The Spurs have now beaten the Jazz twice in six days, which adds a psychological edge to the statistical one, and Utah's trip to New Orleans on Wednesday now carries extra weight as a chance to stop the slide before it defines the early season.

Why It Matters

At 5-2, San Antonio is building a record that matches the eye test: this is a team that can win in different ways, through Wembanyama's dominance on some nights and through balance and defence on others. Holding Utah under 100 points for the first time this season is a marker of progress at the defensive end, and winning the first two games of a three-game homestand keeps momentum rolling into Wednesday's visit from Dallas. For Utah, at 1-6, the early season is already a test of resolve. Five straight defeats, a shooting night of 35.4 percent and a 22-point margin all point to a team that needs a win quickly, not just for the standings but for confidence. The Western Conference does not wait, and every additional loss in November makes the climb back toward contention steeper.

What Happens Next

Both teams play again on Wednesday night. Utah travels to New Orleans, where the Jazz will look to end their five-game losing run, while San Antonio hosts Dallas in the final game of its three-game homestand, aiming for a sixth straight win. The Spurs will hope the balance shown against Utah travels with them, and the Jazz will hope a change of venue brings the shooting touch that deserted them in San Antonio.
