Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the shot of the night in Cleveland. With 33 seconds left and the game tied, the Oklahoma City star buried a 24-foot three-pointer over Sam Merrill to put the Thunder ahead 115-112, and Oklahoma City held on for a 117-112 win over the Cavaliers on Monday night. It was a season-high 43 points for Gilgeous-Alexander, on a career-high-tying 35 field-goal attempts, and it ended a run of two straight road defeats for a Thunder side playing without three injured starters.

Key Points

• Gilgeous-Alexander scored a season-high 43 points, including the go-ahead three with 33 seconds left.
• The Thunder edged the Cavaliers 117-112 in Cleveland on Monday, November 2, 2026.
• Ajay Mitchell added 20 points and sealed the win with two free throws with 16 seconds left.
• The fourth quarter featured eight ties and eight lead changes; the game had 23 lead changes in all.
• Oklahoma City won for the first time in three games since losing three starters to major injuries.

What Happened

The finish was as tense as a November game gets. Cleveland, trailing by three after Gilgeous-Alexander's late three, watched Donovan Mitchell miss a three-pointer on the next possession, and the Cavaliers were forced to foul. Ajay Mitchell, who finished with 20 points, calmly made both free throws with 16 seconds remaining to stretch the lead to five and close the door. Moments earlier, rookie Meleek Thomas, making his first start for Cleveland and scoring a season-high 17 points, had missed a potential go-ahead layup in the final 90 seconds.

The lead changed hands all night. Cleveland took the first quarter 30-26 behind eight points and three assists from Donovan Mitchell, with Gilgeous-Alexander scoring nine for Oklahoma City and Kenrich Williams adding eight. There were 10 lead changes in the opening quarter alone. Oklahoma City then took control in the second, outscoring Cleveland 33-18, with Ajay Mitchell contributing 12 points and Gilgeous-Alexander eight, to carry an 11-point lead into half-time.

Cleveland fought back in the third. A Mario Hezonja basket pulled the Cavaliers within 79-78, but they got no closer in the period, and Gilgeous-Alexander scored 13 points and made all six of his free throws in the quarter as Oklahoma City took a 90-84 lead into the fourth. The final period then swung back and forth eight times before Gilgeous-Alexander settled it from deep.

Background and Context

The win mattered more than an ordinary early-season road victory because of who was missing. Oklahoma City has been without centre Chet Holmgren, who suffered a right patellar tendon tear, forward Jalen Williams, who fractured his left fibula and dislocated his ankle, and guard Cason Wallace, who tore the labrum in his left shoulder. All three injuries landed in the same brutal stretch, and the Thunder had lost their first two games since, both on the road. Monday was their first win since the injuries, and it came against a Cleveland team that reached its conference final last season.

Cleveland had its own absences. Starting small forward Peyton Watson missed the game with right hamstring tightness, and top frontcourt reserve Jaylon Tyson was out with a right ankle sprain. Thomas, whose 17 points in his first start were a bright spot in defeat, joined Donovan Mitchell (17 points, 11 assists) and Evan Mobley (16 points) in double figures.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 43 Points Seal Thunder Win

Gilgeous-Alexander's line tells the story of a star carrying a short-handed team. His 43 points were a season high, and his 35 shots matched his career high and the NBA's season high. He scored in every quarter, made his free throws when Cleveland pressed in the third, and then produced the game's defining moment: a 24-footer over Merrill with the clock winding down and the game tied. It was the last of the game's 23 lead changes and 10 ties, and it left Cleveland with too little time to answer.

His supporting cast did its job around him. Ajay Mitchell's 20 points included 12 in the decisive second quarter and the clinching free throws at the end. Hartenstein's rebounding kept possessions alive in the first half, and Kenrich Williams gave Oklahoma City early scoring when Cleveland jumped ahead. For a team missing three starters, that spread of contributions was exactly what the Thunder needed.

Reactions and Quotes

The reporting from Cleveland framed the result as a test of Oklahoma City's depth passed under pressure. A team that had lost its centre, a forward and a guard to serious injuries in quick succession still found a way to win a road game against a conference finalist, and it did so in the hardest way: from behind, on the road, in a game that changed hands 23 times. Cleveland, meanwhile, was left to rue the small margins: a missed layup in the final 90 seconds, a missed three on the possession after Gilgeous-Alexander's winner, and a fourth quarter in which neither side could hold a lead for long.

Why It Matters

For Oklahoma City, this win stops a slide before it becomes a story. Losing three starters to major injuries can unravel a season quickly, especially on a road trip, and a third straight defeat would have raised real questions about how the Thunder cope. Instead, their best player produced a season-high 43 points, the bench and role players filled the gaps, and the team leaves Cleveland with proof that its system and its star can still win tough road games.

For Cleveland, the defeat is a reminder of how fine the margins are in the East. The Cavaliers matched a short-handed Thunder side for 47 minutes and had chances to win it late, but they could not get the final stop or the final basket. With Watson and Tyson sidelined, Cleveland needs its depth to hold up, and Monday showed both its promise, in Thomas, and its limits.

What Happens Next

The two teams meet again almost immediately. Oklahoma City hosts Cleveland on Wednesday, completing a home-and-home set between two teams that reached their respective conference finals last season. The Thunder will hope the quick rematch brings another win and a return to something like normality, while Cleveland will look to avenge a defeat that slipped away in the final minute.
