The Jacksonville Jaguars' most emphatic win of the season came at a steep price. Head coach Liam Coen confirmed on Monday, November 2, 2026, that defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton and safety Eric Murray both suffered season-ending injuries in Sunday's 42-7 rout of the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium, stripping the AFC South leaders of two defensive starters just days before a short-week trip to Baltimore.

Key Points

• DaVon Hamilton tore a quadriceps in the second quarter against Indianapolis and left the field on a cart.
• Eric Murray injured his elbow on the opening kickoff and was quickly ruled out of the game.
• Both players will go on injured reserve in the coming days, head coach Liam Coen confirmed on Monday.
• Backups Rayuan Lane and Kaevon Merriweather are set to replace Murray in the secondary.
• The AFC South-leading Jaguars (5-2) visit Baltimore on Thursday night; the trade deadline is November 10.

What Happened

The injuries struck early and in quick succession during a game Jacksonville otherwise dominated from start to finish. Murray was hurt on the opening kickoff, missed the first defensive series and was ruled out almost immediately, a blow for a veteran safety. Hamilton followed in the second quarter, suffering a torn quadriceps that required him to be carted off the field, ending his afternoon and, as Monday's announcement confirmed, his season.

Coen delivered the news at his Monday media availability, the day after the win over the Colts. Both players will be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, formally closing their campaigns with nine regular-season games still to play. The timing compounds the blow: Jacksonville has only a short week to prepare for Thursday night's road game against Baltimore, one of the toughest assignments on the schedule, and must now do so while reshuffling two positions at once.

The Jaguars' depth will be tested immediately. Backups Rayuan Lane and Kaevon Merriweather are set to step in for Murray, while the defensive line must absorb the loss of Hamilton, a 29-year-old interior presence who anchored the middle of the front. Starting safety Antonio Johnson also missed Week 8 with an ankle issue, and rookie Caleb Ransaw is already on injured reserve.

Background and Context

The 42-7 win over Indianapolis had looked like a statement performance. Jacksonville dominated from the start, improving to 5-2 and taking control of the AFC South. But the injuries to Murray and Hamilton inside the first 21 minutes cast a shadow over the result even before Monday's confirmation made the damage official.

Hamilton's loss carries particular weight because of his contract situation: the 29-year-old is in the final season of a three-year, $34.5 million extension signed in April 2023, so his injury also clouds his future in Jacksonville. Murray's injury is equally disruptive in a different way: safeties are the communication hub of a modern NFL defence, and asking younger players to take on those duties on a short week against Baltimore's offence is a significant ask.

Jaguars Season-Ending Injuries

The Jaguars season-ending injuries arrive at a moment when Jacksonville's season is genuinely promising. At 5-2, the Jaguars lead the AFC South and have established themselves as one of the more complete teams in the conference. Losing two starters in a single game is the kind of setback that can derail a season if the replacements are not ready, and Thursday night in Baltimore will provide an immediate and unforgiving test.

The broader injury picture makes the situation more fragile. Jacksonville has already lost left tackle Anton Harrison for the season with a torn ACL suffered in London, so the team now has season-ending injuries on both sides of the ball. The November 10 trade deadline gives the front office a window to add reinforcements, but any addition would need time to learn the scheme, and the short week leaves little margin for adjustment.

Reactions and What Coen Said

Coen's Monday confirmation was matter-of-fact, delivered as part of the team's regular injury update the day after the game. The Jaguars have not announced a specific timeline beyond the season-ending designation, and no further medical detail has been released about either player's recovery.

Around the league, the reaction has centred on the cruel timing. Jacksonville had just produced its most complete performance of the year, and the sight of Hamilton leaving on a cart tempered the celebrations. For Hamilton, in particular, the injury comes at a crossroads, with free agency looming and his next contract now tied to a long rehabilitation.

Why It Matters

Defensive injuries of this kind matter because they change how a team can play. Without Hamilton, Jacksonville's run defence loses a proven interior anchor, putting more pressure on the linebackers and edge rushers. Without Murray, the secondary loses experience and communication, which opposing quarterbacks will test with motion, play-action and deep shots designed to confuse younger replacements.

Baltimore is a particularly difficult first test for a reshuffled defence, and Thursday night games already favour the team that can execute without extensive preparation. Beyond Thursday, the injuries matter for the AFC South race and Jacksonville's playoff ambitions: contenders are often judged by how they respond to adversity, and surviving the loss of two starters could yet become the defining stretch of their campaign.

What Happens Next

Jacksonville will formally place Hamilton and Murray on injured reserve, opening roster spots that could be used for practice-squad elevations or a deadline trade. Lane and Merriweather are expected to see expanded roles immediately, starting with Thursday night's visit to Baltimore, while the team monitors Johnson's ankle and Ransaw's rehabilitation.

The short week leaves little time for experimentation. Expect Jacksonville's game plan in Baltimore to lean on what the replacements do best, protecting the secondary with extra help over the top and rotating the defensive line to keep fresh legs in Hamilton's absence. A competitive performance on Thursday, even in defeat, would reassure supporters that the depth is real; a difficult night would sharpen the case for a deadline move.
