Jacob Allen Morley, the convicted Tennessee murderer who escaped from prison on October 25, 2026, was captured in Missouri on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ending a nine-day manhunt across three states. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that Morley, 28, was taken into custody without incident in Carroll County, near Norborne, about 50 miles east-northeast of Kansas City, after Kansas City police followed him by helicopter and his car became stuck trying to drive off the road.

The arrest closed a search that began when staff at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, noticed Morley missing late on October 25. Investigators traced him through a stolen pickup abandoned in Marion, Illinois, to a Missouri highway, where licence-plate cameras gave officers the lead they needed.

What Happened

Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers arrested Morley at around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Carroll County. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Kansas City police had followed him by helicopter, and when his car became stuck trying to drive off the road, officers took him into custody without incident.

The final lead came from FLOCK licence-plate camera technology. After Tennessee flagged Missouri that Morley might be travelling through the state, cameras tracked him south on Missouri Route 291, giving officers a location and direction of travel. The helicopter kept him in sight from the air while ground units moved into position, and the stop on a rural roadside ended the chase.

Background: The Escape That Started the Manhunt

Morley escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, in far northwest Tennessee, on the night of Sunday, October 25, 2026. Staff noticed him missing at around 11:30 p.m., after he cut through perimeter fences and fled the prison grounds. He stole a white Ford F-350 pickup truck, later found abandoned in Marion, Illinois, about 120 miles north of the prison, on October 27.

The escape triggered a widening search. The bureau placed Morley on its Most Wanted list, the reward reached $17,500, and the public was warned not to approach him. Earlier reporting established a troubling timeline: Morley had covered his cell window and misled officers, and hours passed before outside agencies were notified. See our earlier reporting on the escape timeline and the manhunt as the reward rose to $17,500.

Morley was serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of his co-worker Cody Birchfield in Carter County, eastern Tennessee. He had been convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, evading arrest and vandalism, which is why the manhunt stayed at high priority for the full nine days.

Jacob Morley Captured in Missouri: How the Manhunt Ended

The end of the manhunt turned on two tools now central to fugitive searches: licence-plate cameras and air support. FLOCK cameras photograph licence plates and compare them with wanted-vehicle lists, sending an alert on a match. Once Tennessee warned Missouri, that network gave officers the location and direction they needed, and the helicopter did the rest, keeping Morley in sight until troopers could reach him.

The peaceful outcome matters. Manhunts for escaped murderers risk violent confrontation, and this arrest ended without injury, a relief to communities told to stay alert and to the family of Cody Birchfield, for whom the escape reopened a loss they had already lived through once.

Reactions and Official Response

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the capture on Tuesday, confirming the time, place and circumstances and crediting cooperation between Tennessee and Missouri agencies. Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers made the arrest, with Kansas City police providing the helicopter support that kept Morley in sight until ground officers arrived.

Officials have so far given a concise account rather than a full reconstruction of Morley's nine days on the run. Investigators will interview Morley and check his movements before giving a fuller account, including any new charges arising from the escape.

Why It Matters

The capture matters first because it takes a convicted murderer who proved he could break out of prison off the streets. It matters second because of what the escape revealed about prison security in Tennessee, where the reported timeline showed delays in detecting his absence and notifying outside agencies. His return to custody does not answer those questions, but it lets the prison system address them without an active search running at the same time.

It matters third as a test of licence-plate camera networks. Privacy advocates raise concerns about mass surveillance, but here the cameras provided the decisive lead, and law enforcement will cite this arrest as an example of what the technology can do when agencies share information quickly across state lines.

What Happens Next

Morley will be returned to Tennessee Department of Correction custody to resume his life sentence for the murder of Cody Birchfield. Authorities have not yet detailed additional charges he may face for the escape, the theft of the pickup truck, or his movements on the run, but escape and related offences are routinely charged in cases of this kind.

Investigators will also seek to establish where Morley went during the nine days, whether anyone helped him, and how he obtained the vehicle he was driving in Missouri. Those answers matter for any new prosecution and for the prison system's review of the escape, and the public will want to know what has changed at the Northwest Correctional Complex since October 25.
