Senator Susan Collins' federal field office in Biddeford, Maine, was vandalized overnight on Monday, November 2, 2026, on the eve of Election Day, with red paint poured on the sidewalk to resemble a pool of blood and the words "blood on her hands" painted in red. Staff found the damage on Tuesday morning, November 3, as Maine voters headed to the polls in a closely watched Senate race in which Collins, a Republican, is seeking a sixth term against Democratic challenger Troy Jackson.

The attack did not breach the building. Some paint splattered on the office's front doors, but no one got inside. Biddeford police are investigating.

What Happened

The vandalism took place overnight, between Monday night and Tuesday morning, at Collins' federal field office in Biddeford, a city in York County in southern Maine. By the time staff arrived on Tuesday morning, the scene was set: red paint on the sidewalk, arranged to look like a pool of blood, and a short, accusatory phrase painted in the same red paint. The front doors also bore splatters of paint, showing the vandals had reached the entrance itself, even though they did not get inside.

Staff reported the damage, and Biddeford police opened an investigation. The reports available did not name a suspect or describe an arrest. The motive has not been established, and no group has claimed responsibility. The painted phrase is a political accusation, but it is not, on its own, evidence of who held the brush, and investigators will need more than the words themselves to identify a suspect.

The discovery on Tuesday morning meant the vandalism was found on Election Day itself. Voters in Biddeford and across Maine were casting ballots that day, and the news spread as the election was already under way. That sequence — an overnight attack, a morning discovery, a full day of voting — is part of why the story travelled quickly.

Background/Context

Biddeford is one of Collins' field offices in Maine, where constituents seek help with federal agencies. Field offices are deliberately accessible, which also makes them visible targets. Collins has represented Maine in the United States Senate since 1997, and she is the only Republican senator in New England. Her race against Jackson has been closely watched nationally, and polling in the final weeks showed a tight contest, with both parties treating the seat as consequential for the balance of the Senate.

Susan Collins Maine Office Vandalized

The Susan Collins Maine office vandalized on election eve stands out for its staging. Red paint poured to resemble a pool of blood is not casual graffiti. It is a deliberate image, chosen to shock, paired with a phrase that accuses the senator personally, and designed to be photographed, shared and remembered.

Reactions/Quotes

The clearest on-the-record reaction came from Collins' chief of staff, Katie Brown. She called the vandalism "another incident in a series and the second attempt at our Biddeford office to intimidate the senator and her staff", and said staff were undeterred. That wording places the November incident in a sequence and names the purpose the office attributes to the attack: intimidation. It was the office's characterisation, and the frame through which Collins' team wants the incident understood.

Why It Matters

Vandalism of a senator's office matters beyond the cost of cleaning paint from a sidewalk. Field offices are where representation happens at ground level: casework for constituents, meetings with local groups, and a visible federal presence in communities far from Washington. When those offices are targeted, the people who work in them bear the immediate effect, and an office that feels unsafe is harder to run.

It matters, too, because of when it happened. An attack on the eve of an election invites the suspicion that it was meant to influence the vote, whether by intimidating a candidate's team or by dominating the news on Election Day. Even if the motive proves to be something else, the timing alone ensures the incident will be discussed in electoral terms. For Maine, the Senate race itself is one of the most prominent on the 2026 ballot, and Collins' votes have often been decisive in a closely divided chamber.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step belongs to Biddeford police. Their investigation will seek to establish who vandalized the office, when exactly the paint was applied, and whether the incident is connected to the September spray-painting at the same office or the eggs thrown at Collins' Bangor home. Any identification, arrest or charge would be a significant development.

The office will need to be cleaned and, if necessary, secured further, with a fresh look at lighting, cameras and overnight protection after a second incident in about two months. Politically, the next step is the result of the Senate race itself, decided by Maine voters on Tuesday, November 3. The vandalism will not decide that outcome on its own, but it will remain part of the record of a campaign that ended with an attack on a candidate's office.
