Two helicopters collided while landing near Mount Everest base camp in Nepal on Tuesday, killing an Indian tourist and injuring two other people, in a rare accident near one of the world's busiest high-altitude trekking routes. The collision happened at about 8:11 a.m. local time at Pheriche, a village at roughly 4,200 metres (13,780 feet) in the Solukhumbu district, just below Everest base camp, as the two privately operated helicopters attempted to land.

The dead man was a 47-year-old Indian national, Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu, who was travelling aboard a Fishtail Air helicopter. A 49-year-old New Zealand national, Shailesh Krishna Patel, also aboard the Fishtail aircraft, was injured and airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. A Nepali pilot was also injured. Solukhumbu chief district officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar confirmed the death and the rescue operation to Reuters. The cause has not yet been established and is under investigation.

Key Points

• Two helicopters collided while landing at Pheriche, near Mount Everest base camp, at about 8:11 a.m. local time on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
• Indian tourist Vasanth Kumar Balaramaramadu, 47, was killed, while New Zealand national Shailesh Krishna Patel, 49, and a Nepali pilot were injured.
• The aircraft were operated by Fishtail Air (registration 9N-AJR) and Air Dynasty (registration 9N-AOD), according to Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority.
• The Fishtail helicopter was carrying passengers rescued from the Everest region when it crashed while landing, Fishtail Air said.
• A webcam at the nearby Edelweiss-Pheriche resort captured the collision, and the video spread online.

What Happened

The two helicopters were attempting to land at Pheriche, a small settlement on the main trekking route to Everest base camp, when they collided. Pheriche sits at about 4,200 metres, where thin air reduces helicopter lift and leaves pilots with far less margin for error. Landings there are routine in the trekking season, but they demand precise timing, clear communication and careful separation between aircraft using a confined area.

According to Fishtail Air, its helicopter was carrying passengers rescued from the Everest region when the accident happened as it was landing. The company has not yet given a fuller account, and investigators have not said whether one aircraft was already on the ground, still airborne, or in the final stages of its approach when the two came together.

Rescue teams reached the site. The injured New Zealand passenger was flown to Kathmandu for hospital treatment, while the injured pilot also received medical care. The body of the Indian tourist was recovered from the wreckage.

Background and Context

Pheriche is a key staging post on the trek to Everest base camp, used by trekkers acclimatising before pushing higher toward Lobuche and Gorak Shep. It has a small health post, lodges and a helipad that serves as a lifeline for medical evacuations and for transporting tourists who cannot continue on foot.

Helicopters are central to the Everest region's economy and rescue system. When trekkers fall ill with altitude sickness or are injured on the trail, a helicopter is often the only realistic way to reach a hospital quickly. The same aircraft carry tourists on scenic flights and move supplies to villages with no road access. During the peak autumn season, October and November, traffic in the narrow Khumbu valley is at its heaviest.

Nepal's aviation safety record in mountainous terrain has long been under scrutiny. The country's rugged geography, rapidly changing weather and high-altitude landing sites have led the European Union to keep Nepali airlines on its air safety list. At 4,200 metres, air is roughly 40 percent less dense than at sea level, reducing rotor lift, while gusty winds and sudden cloud add to the difficulty of landing.

Everest Helicopter Collision: What Investigators Will Examine

The investigation will focus first on the final minutes of both flights: their approach paths, radio communications, altitudes and speeds, and the positions of the two aircraft as they converged on the Pheriche landing area. Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority has identified the operators and registrations, Fishtail Air's 9N-AJR and Air Dynasty's 9N-AOD, allowing investigators to pull maintenance records and flight histories for both machines.

Investigators will also look at the helipad's condition, the weather at the time, and whether any ground marshalling or traffic management was in place. In remote mountain locations, landing areas are often used by several operators, and without a control tower pilots rely on radio calls and visual separation. Any gap in that coordination will be a central question.

Whether the Fishtail helicopter's rescue mission added pressure will also be examined, although medical evacuation flights are subject to the same safety rules as other flights. The findings could have wider consequences, with previous accidents in Nepal leading to calls for stricter separation rules at busy helipads and tighter oversight of private operators.

Reactions and Statements

Local authorities moved quickly to confirm the basic facts. Solukhumbu chief district officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar confirmed the death and the rescue to Reuters, and Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority identified the operators and registrations. Fishtail Air said its helicopter was carrying rescued passengers when it crashed while landing, and has not yet issued a fuller statement. Air Dynasty has not yet publicly commented, and no formal statements from the Indian or New Zealand governments had been reported at the time of writing.

Why It Matters

The collision strikes at the safety system thousands of trekkers depend on every year. Helicopter rescue is the safety net for the Everest region: when altitude sickness, injury or sudden illness strikes far from a road, a helicopter is often the difference between a hospital bed and a life-threatening delay. It also matters for Nepal's tourism industry, a major source of income and employment, where confidence in helicopter safety is essential.

What Happens Next

Investigators will secure the wreckage, interview the surviving pilots and witnesses, and examine flight and maintenance records, along with any available video, including the resort webcam footage, and radio recordings. A preliminary account may emerge in the coming days, but a full investigation typically takes months. The injured will continue to receive treatment in Kathmandu, and operations in the region are expected to continue with heightened attention to separation at busy helipads.

Frequently Asked Questions
