Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican Representative Mike Collins in one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 midterm elections and handing Democrats their first major victory of election night. The result, projected by NBC News, Decision Desk HQ and CBS News on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, keeps a seat Democrats could not afford to lose as they fight to retake the United States Senate.

Ossoff, 39, was widely seen as the most vulnerable Democratic incumbent in the country. He was the only Democratic senator seeking re-election in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024, winning Georgia by two points. His victory preserves a Democratic foothold in the South and keeps alive hopes of erasing the Republicans' 53-47 Senate majority.

Key Points

• Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican Mike Collins, according to NBC News, Decision Desk HQ and CBS News.
• Early tallies showed Ossoff leading about 80 percent to 20 percent with 11 percent of precincts reporting, later narrowing to roughly 65 percent to 35 percent.
• Ossoff was the only Democratic senator seeking re-election in a state Donald Trump won in 2024, making him his party's most vulnerable incumbent.
• He raised $126 million, far outpacing Collins, who was backed by $18 million in outside spending after a five-man primary and a June runoff.
• Democrats entered election night needing a net gain of four Senate seats to take the majority from Republicans, who held 53 seats to 47.

What Happened

Georgia voters delivered the call relatively early on election night. With about 11 percent of precincts reporting, Ossoff led Collins by roughly 80 percent to 20 percent, reflecting strong early-vote returns from the Atlanta metropolitan area. As more precincts reported, the margin narrowed to about 65 percent to 35 percent, still a commanding lead for the incumbent.

Reuters reported the win on media projections rather than a final certified count. Ossoff first won the seat in 2021 in a runoff that, with Senator Raphael Warnock's victory, gave Democrats Senate control. This time he faced Collins, 59, who won a crowded five-man Republican primary and a June runoff against former football coach Derek Dooley, and entered the general election backed by President Trump.

Background and Context

Georgia has become one of America's most competitive battlegrounds. Once reliably Republican, the state voted for Democrat Joe Biden in 2020, then returned to Trump in 2024 by two points. That swing made Ossoff's bid the centrepiece of the Senate map: losing Georgia would have made the Democrats' already difficult path to a majority nearly impossible.

The race was also among the most expensive in the country. Ossoff raised $126 million, reflecting his national fundraising reach and the stakes both parties attached to the seat. Collins was backed by $18 million in outside spending. The money funded months of advertising, with both sides framing the contest as a referendum on the Trump administration. Record early voting underscored the intensity of interest in the state.

Jon Ossoff Georgia Senate Win: What the Result Means

The Jon Ossoff Georgia Senate win matters first because of arithmetic. Democrats entered Tuesday needing a net gain of four seats for a majority, and holding Georgia was a precondition for any such gain. A loss would have forced Democrats to win seats in states Trump carried by much larger margins. By holding Georgia, Ossoff kept the map alive and shifted pressure to Republican-held seats elsewhere.

It also matters because of who Ossoff is in the Democratic Party. At 39, he is among the Senate's youngest members and has been mentioned in speculation about the 2028 presidential race. During the campaign he said he has "zero interest in running for president" and would serve a full six-year term if re-elected. The win gives him that term, and a larger platform on voting rights, health care and oversight of the Trump administration.

Reactions and Quotes

Democrats greeted the result as the night's first major prize. Party strategists described the hold as essential to keeping Senate control within reach, and framed it as evidence that the Democratic turnout machine in Georgia, built over successive cycles since 2020, remains formidable.

Ossoff campaigned on a promise to serve a full term, telling voters he had "zero interest in running for president" despite national attention on his future. That pledge aimed at voters who wanted a senator focused on Georgia rather than a future national campaign. Collins, meanwhile, ran as an unapologetic Trump supporter, leaning on his authorship of the Laken Riley Act, named for a Georgia nursing student killed in 2024, and on immigration enforcement. The early returns showed that was not enough.

Why It Matters

Beyond Senate arithmetic, the Georgia result tests how the political map is shifting in the South. Population growth driven by the Atlanta suburbs has made Georgia more diverse and competitive, and Ossoff's victory shows Democrats can still win statewide there even in a midterm shaped by a Republican president's agenda.

The result also shapes the final two years of Trump's term. A Senate held by Republicans would give the president a freer hand on judicial nominations and legislation. A Democratic gain, or even a narrower Republican majority, would change calculations for confirmations, oversight hearings and future legislative deals.

What Happens Next

Ossoff will be sworn in for a new six-year term in January 2027, serving until January 2033. Attention now turns to remaining Senate races that will decide whether Democrats can complete the net gain of four seats they need, with results expected through the night and, in some cases, in the days that follow.

Collins's defeat closes a chapter in Georgia Republican politics. The party must reassess how to win statewide in a state where its presidential candidate won in 2024 but its Senate candidate lost in 2026, a split pointing to candidate quality and turnout as much as party labels. Certification will follow in the coming weeks, and the final margin may shift as late and provisional ballots are counted. The outcome itself is settled: Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia.
