Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has said the United States has no immediate plan to strike Iran, telling the Financial Times in a telephone interview on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that Washington is "getting everything we want" from the current stand-off — even as he warned that American forces are "locked and loaded" if negotiations fail. The six-minute interview, given hours before midterm polls closed, is Trump's clearest public statement yet on the next phase of the eight-month US-Iran war, and it landed just as reports emerged that the US military was preparing for a possible fresh strike as early as Wednesday.

Trump's message was deliberately two-sided: reassurance that no attack is imminent, paired with an unmistakable threat that one remains possible. "We seem to be getting everything we want," he said, calling the current posture a "brilliant situation." Asked about hints from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that an attack might be incoming, Trump replied: "I'm ready, we're ready. We're locked and loaded if we need to go, but there may be no reason for it." He also confirmed negotiations are continuing: "We're having discussions, and we'll see how that all works out."

What Happened

The Financial Times interview lasted just six minutes, but its timing gave it outsized weight. Trump spoke by telephone on Tuesday, November 3, as Americans were voting in the midterm elections. He said he was content with the current state of the stand-off with Tehran — a striking note of satisfaction from a president who has repeatedly threatened further military action during a war now in its ninth month.

The interview addressed the most sensitive question hanging over Washington: whether a new strike is coming, and when. The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the US military was preparing for a possible fresh strike on Iran as early as Wednesday, and Netanyahu was reported to be pressing for strikes right after the midterms. Trump did not deny that preparations exist. Instead, he framed readiness as leverage, saying the United States is prepared but sees no immediate reason to act.

Background: A War in Its Ninth Month

The United States and Iran have been at war since late February 2026, a conflict that has reshaped Middle East politics, disrupted global oil shipments and repeatedly pushed the region to the edge of a wider confrontation.

Trump said on Monday, November 2, at the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, that a deal was "coming together very nicely" and that Iran wants a deal. Vice President Vance, speaking the same day after returning to Washington from campaign stops in New York and Ohio and talking to Trump about an hour earlier, said Washington had made "progress" in talks and that he and Trump "both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement."

Trump's Iran Strike Warning and the Netanyahu Factor

A central question in the interview was the role of Netanyahu, who has been reported to be pressing Trump for strikes immediately after the midterms. Trump did not criticise the Israeli leader directly, but his answer made clear that the decision rests in Washington. By saying he is "ready" but sees "no reason" to act, Trump appeared to push back against any timetable imposed from outside while keeping the threat credible for Tehran.

The dynamic matters because Israel has been one of the most vocal advocates of continued military pressure on Iran, and any divergence between Washington and Jerusalem over timing could shape the next phase of the war. Trump's insistence that the US is "getting everything we want" suggests he believes the current combination of military readiness and negotiation is already delivering results, without the need for an immediate new round of strikes.

Reactions and Quotes

Trump's own words dominated the reaction to the interview. "We seem to be getting everything we want," he told the Financial Times, adding that the current posture is a "brilliant situation." On negotiations, he said: "We're having discussions, and we'll see how that all works out."

Vance's comments on Monday provided the immediate context. "No, we haven't set deadlines," he said when asked whether Iran had been given a deadline before strikes resume, adding that "we've had a number of good conversations with the Iranians." Trump had earlier told reporters on Monday that he was not considering striking Iran after the midterms, and at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool reopening he said a deal was "coming together very nicely" and that Iran wants a deal.

Why It Matters

The interview matters for three reasons. First, it lowers the temperature at a moment of maximum tension: with reports of a possible strike as early as Wednesday, a presidential statement that no attack is immediately planned gives markets, allies and shipping operators some breathing room.

What Happens Next

Several things will be watched in the coming days. The first is whether the reported Wednesday strike window passes without action, which would reinforce Trump's message that diplomacy is in the lead. The second is whether mediators report concrete progress, including on the core American demand for a verifiable commitment that Iran will not rebuild its nuclear programme.
