Chris Pappas has won New Hampshire's open United States Senate seat, defeating former senator John Sununu and making history as America's first openly gay male senator. The Associated Press declared Pappas the winner at 8:20 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a result that kept a crucial seat in Democratic hands on a night when control of the Senate remained in the balance.

The Chris Pappas New Hampshire Senate win came in one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 midterms. Pappas, a 46-year-old moderate Democrat who has represented New Hampshire's First Congressional District in the House for four terms, succeeds retiring three-term Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who served 18 years in the Senate. Sununu, 62, conceded on election night, telling supporters: "This has been an incredible campaign. But this is not our night."

What Happened

Polls closed in New Hampshire on Tuesday evening, and the result came quickly. The Associated Press declared Pappas the winner at 8:20 p.m. ET, a call that reflected a clear margin in the early returns. Fox News Decision Desk figures with 19.18 percent of the vote reported put Pappas at 60.6 percent to Sununu's 37.61 percent. Separate Associated Press figures showed Pappas with 97,826 votes to Sununu's 61,806 at an early stage of the count.

The contest had drawn national attention because of what was at stake. Democrats entered election night needing a net gain of four seats to take the Senate from the Republicans' 53-47 majority. Holding New Hampshire was therefore not optional for Democrats: losing an open seat in a state they already held would have made an already difficult path to a majority almost impossible. Pappas's win kept that path alive.

Background/Context

The seat became open when Jeanne Shaheen, first elected to the Senate in 2008 after serving as New Hampshire's governor, announced her retirement after three terms. Shaheen's 18 years in the Senate made her one of the chamber's most experienced Democrats, and her departure created the state's first open Senate race in years. Both parties treated the seat as a top target from the start.

Pappas brought a distinctive profile to the race. A moderate Democrat from Manchester, he had won four terms in the House, building a reputation as a pragmatic lawmaker focused on kitchen-table issues. His campaign leaned heavily on the cost of living, health care and the impact of the war with Iran on energy prices and oil shipments, arguing that President Donald Trump and Republicans bore responsibility for the disruption facing New Hampshire households.

Sununu, by contrast, was a familiar name returning to a familiar fight. He held the same Senate seat from 2003 to 2009 before losing it to Shaheen in 2008, a defeat that had defined New Hampshire politics for a generation. His comeback campaign argued that more domestic energy production would lower prices and that New Hampshire needed a Republican voice in Washington. High energy prices amid the war with Iran were a major issue throughout the campaign, and the two candidates offered voters sharply different answers.

Chris Pappas New Hampshire Senate Win: What It Means for the State

For New Hampshire, the result preserves continuity in one important sense and marks a break in another. The seat stays with the Democrats, as it has since Shaheen defeated Sununu in 2008, and Pappas's moderate politics echo the pragmatic tradition that has often defined New Hampshire's representation in Washington. At the same time, his election is a genuine first: no openly gay man has previously served in the United States Senate.

That historic dimension was not the centrepiece of Pappas's campaign, which focused relentlessly on affordability, health care and energy costs. But it gives the result a significance beyond the Senate arithmetic. New Hampshire voters, who have a long record of electing candidates from both parties, chose a candidate whose personal story breaks new ground while presenting himself as a steady, centrist lawmaker.

Reactions/Quotes

Sununu conceded gracefully on election night. Addressing supporters, he said: "This has been an incredible campaign. But this is not our night." The concession closed a comeback bid that had sought to reclaim the seat he lost 18 years earlier, and it removed any doubt about the outcome within hours of the polls closing.

Why It Matters

The Senate majority matters because it decides which bills reach the floor, which nominees are confirmed and which investigations proceed. With Republicans holding 53 seats to the Democrats' 47 before election night, Democrats needed to flip four seats without losing any of their own. Every hold was therefore as important as every flip, and New Hampshire was among the most important holds of all.

The historic first also matters. Representation in the Senate has broadened slowly over the chamber's history, and Pappas's election adds a new chapter to that story. For LGBTQ Americans, and for a state that was among the first to embrace marriage equality through its legislature, the result carries a symbolic weight that goes beyond party politics.

What Happens Next

Pappas will take his seat when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027. Between now and then, the focus will shift to the remaining Senate races still to be decided and to the balance of power that emerges once every contest is called. If Democrats fall short of the four net gains they need, Pappas will arrive in the Senate as part of a minority; if they succeed, his vote could prove decisive in a narrow majority.

Related election-night results include Mark Warner's fourth-term win in Virginia, Jon Ossoff's re-election in Georgia and Roy Cooper's flip of the North Carolina Senate seat.
