Katie Hobbs has won a second term as governor of Arizona, defeating Republican challenger Andy Biggs by nearly 20 points in one of the most decisive statewide results of the 2026 midterm elections. Decision Desk HQ called the race for the Democratic incumbent at 10:11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as early returns showed Hobbs with a commanding lead that never narrowed. The result keeps Arizona's governorship in Democratic hands and extends a run of polling strength that had placed Hobbs ahead throughout the campaign.

With 56 percent of the expected vote counted by 10:22 p.m. ET, Hobbs held 914,608 votes, or 58.89 percent, against 615,367 votes, or 39.62 percent, for Biggs, from 1,553,024 ballots counted. The margin, close to 19.3 percentage points at that stage, was far wider than the close contests many analysts had expected in Arizona, a state long known as a battleground. Final results may still take days, because Arizona counts later ballots over the following days, but the scale of the early lead left little doubt about the outcome.

What Happened

The call came relatively early on election night, a sign of how clear the result was once the first large batches of ballots were reported. Decision Desk HQ, one of the main election-night callers, projected Hobbs as the winner at 10:11 p.m. ET, and its figures minutes later showed a lead of almost 300,000 votes. Hobbs had led in every public survey since late August, and outside the margin of error in each one.

Biggs entered the general election after a strong primary performance, winning the Republican nomination with 73.6 percent against fellow Representative David Schweikert. That victory gave him the backing of the party base, but it did not translate into a close general-election contest. Hobbs, by contrast, had built her lead steadily over months, and election-night returns confirmed the polling rather than overturning it.

Background and Context

Hobbs has served as Arizona's governor since 2023, after a career in state politics that included serving as Arizona's secretary of state. Her first term was shaped by the familiar pressures of a closely divided state: a Republican-led legislature, sharp debates over water, housing and the cost of living, and the national attention that Arizona attracts in every election cycle. She campaigned for re-election on her record in office and on the argument that she had provided steady leadership for the state.

Biggs, a Republican congressman, presented a contrasting vision and drew on his record in Washington. His primary win over Schweikert showed his strength within the Republican Party in Arizona, but the general election required a broader coalition, including independent voters and moderate Republicans in the Phoenix suburbs and other fast-growing areas. The election-night numbers suggest that coalition did not come together in sufficient numbers to challenge Hobbs.

Katie Hobbs Arizona Governor Win: What the Result Means

The Katie Hobbs Arizona governor win matters beyond the governor's office itself. With other statewide wins on the same night, Arizona Democrats were positioned for a notable milestone: the first time Democrats have won consecutive terms for all three top statewide posts since 1954 to 1956. That historical framing, noted in election-night coverage, underlines how durable the Democratic position in the state's top offices has become, at least for this cycle.

The result also fits the broader pattern of the 2026 midterms, in which Democrats made gains in several high-profile governor and Senate races. Arizona was not an isolated case, but it was one of the clearest. A nearly 20-point win in a state that has often been decided by small margins sends a signal about voter mood in 2026, about the strength of the incumbent's campaign, and about the limits of a campaign built mainly on the party base.

Reactions and What Comes Next

As counting continues, the focus now turns to the final certified totals and to the shape of the next term. Hobbs takes office for her second term in January, and her administration will set out its priorities for the new term in the weeks ahead. The margin gives her a strong mandate to argue for her programme, even though the legislature will remain a check on what can pass.

For Biggs, the result ends a bid to move from Congress to the governor's office. His primary victory showed his standing with Republican voters, but the general election showed the different challenge of winning statewide in Arizona. The party will now assess what the result means for its future statewide campaigns in a state where the electorate has become more diverse and where suburban voters have proved decisive.

Why It Matters

Governor races matter because governors shape daily life in ways that federal politics often does not: schools, roads, water supplies, health care and the administration of elections. In Arizona, where water scarcity, rapid growth and housing costs are pressing issues, the governor's choices have direct consequences for millions of residents. A second term for Hobbs means continuity on those issues, rather than the sharp change of direction a Biggs victory would have brought.

What Happens Next

Counting will continue in the coming days as Arizona processes the remaining ballots, and the final margin will be confirmed when results are certified. Hobbs will prepare for her second term, which begins in January, while the legislature prepares for a new session. The policy agenda for that session, from water and housing to education and the state budget, will be the first test of how the election result translates into governing.
