Democrat Rebecca Bennett has won New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, defeating two-term Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr. in one of the most closely watched House races of the 2026 midterm elections. The Associated Press declared Bennett the winner at 9:48 p.m. ET on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, and NBC News also called the race for the Democrat, capping a campaign that turned a traditionally Republican seat into a Democratic gain on a night of sweeping change across the country.

With 85.63 per cent of precincts reporting, AP figures showed Bennett on 176,836 votes to Kean's 121,757, a margin that reflected a decisive victory in a district that had been drawn to favour Republicans and that President Donald Trump had carried by 1.2 percentage points in 2024. Earlier tallies on election night had Bennett leading by roughly 60.8 per cent to between 37 and 39 per cent, and while the precise final percentage moved as more precincts reported, the outcome itself was never in serious doubt once the AP call was made.

What Happened

Election night in New Jersey's 7th District unfolded quickly once polls closed. Bennett built an early lead that held through the evening, and the AP's 9:48 p.m. ET call came while a substantial share of precincts were still reporting, a sign of how wide the margin had become. NBC's separate call for Bennett reinforced the result, and by the time later tallies were published, Bennett's vote total of 176,836 dwarfed Kean's 121,757 at 85.63 per cent of precincts reporting.

Kean, 58, congratulated Bennett and pledged a peaceful transition, according to reports of his election-night response. That concession, coming from a two-term incumbent in a seat his party had expected to defend, underlined the scale of the swing. Bennett's campaign had argued for months that the district was winnable, pointing to suburban voters' concerns about costs, healthcare and the direction of the country, and the result bore that argument out.

Background and Context

Tom Kean Jr. is the son of former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, and he first won the 7th District seat in 2022. His tenure, however, was marked by an extraordinary absence from the House in 2026. Kean disappeared from the chamber between 5 March and 30 June 2026, missing more than 100 roll-call votes, and in some counts more than 140, before disclosing on the House floor on 30 June that he had been hospitalised for depression.

Bennett brought a very different biography to the contest. A former Navy helicopter pilot, she presented herself as a disciplined, service-oriented candidate, and as a mother of two she spoke directly to families worried about the cost of living. Her campaign leaned heavily on healthcare, an issue that has consistently ranked among voters' top concerns, and on rising prices, which she tied to the administration's tariff policies. She also campaigned on ending the Iran war and on reining in Trump's tariffs, positions that placed her firmly against the president's agenda in a district that nonetheless contains his Bedminster property.

Reactions and Quotes

Kean congratulated Bennett on her victory and pledged a peaceful transition, a response that was welcomed across party lines as a reaffirmation of the democratic process in a closely watched race. Bennett's victory was declared by the Associated Press and projected by NBC News, two calls that together left no ambiguity about the result.

Why It Matters

The 7th District flip matters for three reasons. First, it directly affects the balance of power in the House, where Democrats needed only a small net gain to take control. Every Republican-held seat that changed hands brought that goal closer, and New Jersey's 7th was among the earliest and clearest of those gains on election night.

Third, it matters for New Jersey itself. The state's congressional delegation will now include another Democrat, and Bennett will take office in January with a mandate built on healthcare, affordability and a more restrained foreign and trade policy. Her priorities will be watched closely, not least because she campaigned on ending the Iran war, an issue on which Congress may soon face consequential votes.

What Happens Next

Bennett will be sworn in as the representative for New Jersey's 7th District in January, when the new Congress convenes. She will take up the work of a freshman member in a chamber whose majority may have changed hands, with committee assignments, staff hires and constituent services to organise in the weeks after the election.

For the district, the immediate question is what Bennett does with the mandate voters have given her. She campaigned on lowering healthcare costs, easing price pressures, ending the Iran war and curbing tariffs, and voters will judge her, as they judged her predecessor, on whether she delivers visible progress on those issues. The 2026 result shows that New Jersey's 7th District is no longer a safe Republican seat. It is a competitive battleground, and both parties will be preparing for the next contest there long before 2028.
