Democrat James Talarico has won Texas's United States Senate race, defeating Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in one of the most stunning results of the 2026 midterm elections. Newsmax, Decision Desk HQ and NBC News projected the victory on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, handing Democrats a seat they had not won in Texas for nearly four decades and breaking a statewide drought that had lasted since 1994.

With 68 percent of the vote counted, Newsmax put Talarico ahead by 55.2 percent to Paxton's 43.2 percent, with Libertarian Ted Brown on 1.6 percent. USA TODAY's tally at 9:10 p.m. Eastern Time showed Talarico on 56.33 percent to Paxton's 42.04 percent, from 6,026,407 votes counted. The margin was far wider than the close contest many polls had predicted, and it arrived on a night when Democrats were flipping seats across the country.

Key Points

• Democrat James Talarico, 37, defeated Republican Ken Paxton, 63, in Texas's Senate race on November 3, 2026.
• Projections from Newsmax, Decision Desk HQ and NBC News put Talarico ahead by about 12 to 14 points.
• It is the first Democratic statewide win in Texas since 1994 and the first Democratic Texas Senate win since Lloyd Bentsen's re-election in 1988.
• The seat was vacated by four-term Republican Senator John Cornyn, who lost the Republican primary runoff to Paxton.
• The flip gives Democrats a third of the net four Senate seats they needed to erase the Republicans' 53-47 majority.

What Happened

Voters went to the polls to fill a seat left open by Cornyn, whose long career in Washington ended not at the general election but in the Republican primary runoff, where Paxton defeated him after receiving President Donald Trump's endorsement. That set up a contest between two sharply different figures: Paxton, Texas's attorney general since 2015, and Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative, former public school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian.

As returns came in, the scale of Talarico's lead became clear. Decision Desk HQ and NBC News also projected him as the winner. The Associated Press had still shown the race as too early to call when those projections were reported, a reminder that different news organisations apply different thresholds before calling a race, but the direction of the count was consistent across the outlets that had called it.

Talarico campaigned on affordability and corruption, themes that cut across party lines in a state where household costs, housing and health care dominate kitchen-table conversations. Paxton campaigned as a proven conservative fighter, backed by the president and by national Republican groups that poured more than 281 million dollars into the race on his behalf, making it one of the most expensive Senate contests ever fought. In the end, that spending advantage did not save the Republican campaign.

Background and Context

No Democrat has won a statewide office in Texas since 1994, the longest such drought in the nation. In Senate races the wait has been even longer: the last Democrat to win a Texas Senate seat was Lloyd Bentsen, re-elected in 1988. Generations of Democratic candidates have tried and failed to break through, including high-profile campaigns in 2018 and 2024 that came close but fell short.

Paxton carried a record his opponents were eager to revisit. He was impeached by the Republican-led Texas House in 2023 and acquitted by the state Senate, and felony securities fraud charges against him were dropped in 2024 through pretrial diversion. Talarico's campaign argued that record spoke to trust and accountability; Paxton's supporters argued he had been vindicated and that the attacks were politically motivated. Talarico, meanwhile, spoke often about classrooms, pay and public services, and his background as a seminarian gave his campaign a moral language that resonated beyond the Democratic base.

James Talarico Texas Senate Win Breaks 32-Year Drought

A Democratic win in Texas at statewide level had become, for many analysts, almost unthinkable after three decades of Republican dominance. Polls through the autumn had suggested a close race, with some surveys showing a tie and others a narrow Talarico lead. The final margin, if it holds as counting finishes, would therefore surprise even many who expected a competitive contest.

Reactions and Quotes

The projections drew swift attention across the political world, not least because Texas had been treated as a Republican stronghold for so long. Democratic supporters celebrated a result they had waited a generation to see, while Republican strategists were left to explain how a race into which national groups had poured more than 281 million dollars for Paxton had ended in a double-digit defeat. No concession or victory speech details were included in the initial reporting of the projections. Earlier in the campaign, Senator Ted Cruz had warned publicly that Republicans could lose every statewide race in Texas, a warning that seemed alarmist to some at the time and prescient by Tuesday night.

Why It Matters

First, the Senate arithmetic changes. Every flipped seat narrows the Republican majority and strengthens the Democratic hand in negotiations over legislation, confirmations and oversight. A Texas Democrat in the Senate also changes the geography of the chamber: the party will now hold a seat from a state central to Republican presidential maths for decades.

Second, the result will shape both parties' strategies for 2028 and beyond. Democrats will study how Talarico built a winning coalition in Texas, and whether it can be repeated in other Republican-leaning states. Republicans will study the opposite question: whether Paxton's primary victory, and the controversies that came with it, cost them a seat they might otherwise have held, and whether candidate quality mattered more than money.

What Happens Next

Counting will continue until the result is certified, and the final margin may shift as remaining ballots are tallied. Once certified, Talarico will prepare to take his seat in Washington, joining a Senate whose control will have been decided by the full set of results from Tuesday night. His first tasks will include building a staff, choosing committee assignments and setting out his legislative priorities, with affordability and corruption likely to feature prominently.
