WASHINGTON — Democrats will take control of the United States Senate, Decision Desk HQ and NBC News projected on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, completing a midterm sweep of Congress hours after Democrats had already been projected to win a majority in the House of Representatives. The Senate call gives Democrats control of both chambers and reshapes the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to reach 51 and take the chamber from the Republicans' 53-47 majority, because a 50-50 Senate would have been broken by Republican Vice President JD Vance. One Senate race in Michigan was still uncalled.

Key Points

• Decision Desk HQ and NBC News projected on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 that Democrats will take control of the US Senate.
• Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to reach 51, taking the chamber from the Republicans' 53-47 majority.
• Flips were reported in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa, including historic wins in Kansas and Texas.
• Adam Hamilton is projected to be the first Democrat to win a Kansas Senate seat since 1932; James Talarico the first in Texas since 1988.
• The Michigan Senate race remained uncalled at the time of the projection, so the final size of the Democratic majority is not yet settled.

What Happened

USA TODAY reported that Democrats flipped Senate seats in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa. The winners named in those flips were Annie Andrews in South Carolina, Roy Cooper in North Carolina, James Talarico in Texas and Sherrod Brown in Ohio, alongside Adam Hamilton in Kansas and Josh Turek in Iowa. Together they carried Democrats past the four-seat net gain they needed.

Two of the flips carried particular historic weight. Hamilton is projected to be the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Kansas since 1932. Talarico is projected to be the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate seat since 1988. The Michigan Senate race, where Abdul El-Sayed is seeking to keep the seat in Democratic hands, remained uncalled at the time of the projection, meaning the final size of the Democratic majority was not yet settled.

Background and Context

Democrats entered election night facing steep arithmetic in the Senate. Only about a third of Senate seats are contested in any election, and Republicans held a 53-47 majority, so Democrats needed to gain four seats net while defending their own vulnerable seats. The party had already cleared the first hurdle of the night when Decision Desk HQ projected Democratic control of the House at 9:09 p.m. Eastern Time. The pattern of flips eventually left no plausible path for Republicans to hold the chamber.

Democrats Senate Control: What the New Majority Can Do

Retaking the Senate gives Democrats leverage that a House majority alone could not provide. On legislation, Democrats will be able to advance bills through both chambers and force the president to take a public position, including on reversing Medicaid and food-stamp cuts and on reasserting Congress's role on trade. On nominations, the Senate's confirmation power means it will be harder for President Trump to install Cabinet and judicial nominees, including for a potential Supreme Court vacancy, since nominees must now win over a Democratic majority. That confirmation power is one of the Senate's most consequential tools, and it changes the calculations for every future appointment.

The immediate showdown is likely to come over the Iran war and congressional authorisation or funding. The United States has been at war with Iran since February 2026, and control of the Senate gives Democrats a direct say over war funding and over any legislation seeking to authorise or limit the conflict. A Democratic Senate can hold hearings, demand testimony from administration officials and force votes that a Republican majority would not have scheduled.

Reactions

President Trump, speaking to The New York Times in an interview on Tuesday evening while watching returns at the White House, said he is absolutely willing to accept the midterm results and will work with Democrats. The remarks contrasted with his pre-vote position that he would accept results if they were honest elections. Trump also blamed Republican losses on his own absence from the ballot, saying that if he had been on the ballot, Republicans would have won by a large margin.

Why It Matters

The result matters beyond the arithmetic of seats because it ends unified Republican control of Washington and replaces it with divided government. For two years, Republicans controlled both chambers and could advance their legislative priorities through Congress, subject only to the president's signature. From January 2027, Democrats will control the floor agendas in both chambers, deciding which bills are debated, which investigations are opened and which nominees move forward. That shift limits what the president can achieve without Congress on domestic legislation, major spending decisions and any change to the tax code or entitlement programmes, even though executive orders and foreign policy remain largely in presidential hands.

What Happens Next

The immediate next steps are counting and certification. The Michigan race remains to be called, and the final Democratic seat total will not be known until states complete their counts, including mail ballots and close races that may require recounts. The new Congress will not take office until January 3, 2027, when senators and representatives are sworn in and the leadership of both chambers is chosen. The outgoing Republican majority remains in office for the lame-duck session, and the new Democratic leadership will announce committee assignments and priorities.
