Gina Hinojosa has won the Texas governor race, defeating three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott and becoming the first Latina governor in Texas history. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and US media projected the win for the Austin Democrat, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the governor's office. Hinojosa, 52, will also be the first Democrat to hold the job since Ann Richards left office in 1995, closing the longest statewide Democratic drought in the nation.

Abbott conceded at about 10 p.m. Eastern Time at his election-night party in Austin, congratulating Hinojosa on her victory. With about 69 percent of precincts reporting, Hinojosa led with 4,089,963 votes to Abbott's 3,031,499, roughly 57 percent to 42 percent. The result denies Abbott, 68, a record fourth term after 12 years in office, and it came on the same night Democrat James Talarico won Texas's Senate race, completing a remarkable Democratic double in a state long regarded as a Republican stronghold.

What Happened

Texas voters delivered one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday night, turning out in large numbers and handing Hinojosa a clear victory over an incumbent who had held the governor's office since 2015. The Associated Press called the race as returns showed Hinojosa building a lead that Abbott could not close, and other major US outlets quickly projected the same result. Abbott's concession, delivered at his Austin election-night party at about 10 p.m. Eastern Time, confirmed the outcome before the night was over.

The margin was striking. With 69.2 percent of precincts reporting, Hinojosa had 4,089,963 votes to Abbott's 3,031,499, a lead of roughly 57 percent to 42 percent. That is a decisive win in a state where no Democrat has won statewide office since 1994, and it reverses years of near-misses for Texas Democrats, who had repeatedly come close in statewide races without breaking through. Hinojosa's victory was part of a wider Democratic night across the country, but Texas stood out because of the scale of the shift and the length of Republican dominance it ended.

Background: Three Decades of Republican Rule in Texas

To understand the size of this result, it helps to recall how long Texas has been out of Democratic reach at the statewide level. Ann Richards, the last Democratic governor, left office in 1995, and since then Republicans have won every governor's race and every other statewide contest. The last Democrat to win any statewide office in Texas did so in 1994. For a generation of Texas voters, Republican control of the governor's mansion has been the normal state of affairs.

Abbott himself embodied that era. First elected governor in 2014, he won re-election twice and was seeking a record fourth term in 2026, after 12 years in office. His tenure covered the state's rapid population growth, its battles with the federal government over immigration and regulation, and the expansion of the private-school voucher programme that began in 2026 with $1 billion in tax money. That programme became one of the sharpest dividing lines of the campaign, with Hinojosa arguing that public money should go to public schools instead.

Gina Hinojosa Texas Governor Win: What Her Victory Means

The Gina Hinojosa Texas governor win matters for reasons that go beyond one office. As the state's first Latina governor, Hinojosa's election is a milestone for representation in a state where Hispanic Texans make up a large and growing share of the population. Her personal story, from growing up in the Rio Grande Valley to serving on the Austin school board and then in the state legislature, gives her a profile that is unusual among recent Texas governors, and her supporters presented that background as a strength rather than a novelty.

It also matters because it pairs with the Senate result on the same night. James Talarico's win in the Texas Senate race means Democrats captured both of the state's top contests on November 3, a combination that would have seemed unlikely even a few years ago. Together, the two victories suggest that the coalition that delivered Hinojosa's win was broad enough to carry a federal race as well, and they give Democrats a new foothold in a state that sends a large delegation to Congress and a large number of electoral votes to presidential elections.

Reactions

Abbott's concession set the tone for the night, as he congratulated Hinojosa at his Austin party and accepted the result. His remarks closed a campaign that had been fought hard on both sides, and they left no doubt about the outcome. Hinojosa's campaign, meanwhile, framed the win as the result of a campaign built around schools, costs and public services, themes she returned to again and again on the trail.

Why It Matters

The governor of Texas holds real power over a state of more than 30 million people, with authority over the budget, the state bureaucracy, vetoes of legislation and appointments across state government. Even with a Republican-led legislature, Hinojosa will be able to veto bills, set the tone for state agencies and use the governor's office to push her priorities in public. That matters for public schools, which were at the centre of her campaign, for teacher pay, and for the future of the voucher programme she opposed.

What Happens Next

Hinojosa will take office in January 2027, and the transition period will be busy. She has pledged to replace Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath with an educator, a move that would signal a sharp change in direction for the state's schools. Her administration will need to be staffed, a budget approach set out, and relationships built with legislative leaders who may disagree with her on much of her programme.
