Democrat Peggy Flanagan has won Minnesota's US Senate race, defeating Republican Michele Tafoya on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and becoming the first Native American woman elected to the US Senate. With about 75 percent of ballots counted, Flanagan led by roughly 54 percent to 43 percent, according to the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal, a margin that settled the race on election night even as counting continued.

The result keeps in Democratic hands a seat the party has held for decades, and it does so with a candidate whose personal story has long been central to Minnesota politics. Flanagan, 47, has been Minnesota's lieutenant governor since 2019 alongside Governor Tim Walz, and she is a citizen of the White Earth Nation. Her election is a milestone not only for Minnesota, but for Native representation in the Senate, where no Native American woman has ever before won election.

What Happened

Minnesota voters went to the polls on November 3, 2026, as part of nationwide midterm elections that decided control of Congress and dozens of governor's offices and state contests. In the Senate race, Flanagan faced Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter seeking federal office for the first time, alongside Libertarian Rebecca Whiting and independent Marisa Simonetti, who also appeared on the ballot.

As returns arrived through the evening, Flanagan built a clear and steady lead. Both the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal reported her ahead by about 54 percent to Tafoya's 43 to 43.3 percent with roughly three quarters of ballots counted. That margin, around eleven points, was wide enough for the race to be called on election night.

Background and Context

Flanagan's path to the Senate began well before election night. She won the Democratic primary on August 11, 2026, taking about 59 percent of the vote over Representative Angie Craig. That early result settled the party's nomination and gave her campaign months to focus on the general election, while her years as lieutenant governor gave her statewide name recognition and a record in state government that her campaign put at the centre of its pitch.

The seat became open when Senator Tina Smith, a Democrat, chose not to seek re-election. Her retirement set off a competitive primary and a general election that drew national attention, because Minnesota, while leaning Democratic in recent statewide races, is also a state where Republicans have invested heavily in hopes of breaking a long losing streak. No Republican has won a Minnesota Senate race since 2002, a run of more than two decades that Flanagan's victory has now extended.

Peggy Flanagan Minnesota Senate Victory

The historic character of Flanagan's win is difficult to overstate. She is a citizen of the White Earth Nation, one of Minnesota's Ojibwe tribal nations, and her election means that, for the first time, a Native American woman will sit in the United States Senate as an elected member. Native Americans have served in the Senate before, but never a Native woman elected by voters to the chamber.

That milestone carries particular weight in Minnesota, home to eleven federally recognised tribal nations, where Native voters and tribal governments play an important role in state politics. Flanagan has spoken throughout her career about her identity and her family's history, and her rise from state legislator to lieutenant governor and now senator-elect has been followed closely by Native communities across the country, for whom her election is both a personal achievement and a symbol of broader representation.

Reactions

The sources reporting Flanagan's victory did not, at the time of the call, carry a concession statement from Tafoya, and no formal statement from outgoing Senator Smith was included in the initial results coverage. What was clear was the scale of the win: a double-digit lead with most ballots counted, reported consistently by the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal, left little room for doubt about the outcome before the final count was complete.

Why It Matters

Flanagan's election matters for three reasons. First, it preserves the Democratic hold on a Senate seat Republicans had targeted, shaping the balance of power in a closely divided chamber. Second, it is a historic first: the Senate has existed for more than two centuries, and the election of its first Native American woman will be recorded in the institution's history regardless of party. Representation matters practically as well as symbolically, because senators bring their backgrounds and their communities' concerns into debates over health care, education, tribal sovereignty, infrastructure and the federal budget. Third, the result says something about Minnesota itself. A state that has voted Democratic in every presidential election since 1976 chose a Democrat by a comfortable margin for an open Senate seat, suggesting that, at least in 2026, its statewide electorate remains more Democratic than Republican.

Readers following the midterms can also read our earlier coverage, including how the Minnesota Senate race tightened in the final week before the vote, Wes Moore winning a second term as Maryland governor, and Americans voting as control of Congress hung in the balance.

What Happens Next

Flanagan will now prepare to take her seat when the new Congress convenes, succeeding Tina Smith. That transition involves building a Senate staff, choosing committee assignments, and beginning work with colleagues on the legislative agenda. Her departure as lieutenant governor will also set off a transition in Minnesota state government, where Governor Tim Walz will need to fill the role she has held since 2019. Minnesota election officials, meanwhile, will complete the canvass and certify final totals that may shift the margin slightly from the election-night figures. Those final numbers will confirm what election night already made clear: Peggy Flanagan has won Minnesota's Senate seat and made history in the process.
