Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn won Tennessee's governor race on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, becoming the first woman elected governor of Tennessee and the state's 51st governor. The Associated Press called the race for Blackburn over Democrat Jerri Green, a Memphis city councilwoman, in a contest that was far closer than many expected in a state where Republicans have dominated statewide elections for years. Blackburn, 74, will succeed term-limited Republican Governor Bill Lee and is due to be sworn in on January 16, 2027, after resigning her Senate seat. Her victory keeps the governor's office in Republican hands, but the narrow margin, and Green's strong showing, will shape how both parties read Tennessee's political future.

Key Points

• Marsha Blackburn won Tennessee's governor race on November 3, 2026, becoming the state's first woman governor.
• The Associated Press called the race, with Blackburn leading Jerri Green by 950,259 votes to 902,546 at 98.79% of precincts reporting.
• Green conceded just after 10:30 p.m. CT in Chattanooga, saying she was "not going anywhere" despite the defeat.
• Blackburn, a senator since 2019, must resign her U.S. Senate seat before she is sworn in as governor on January 16, 2027.
• Independent David Hatley took about 9.3% of the vote, a share that helped keep the margin between the two leading candidates tight.

What Happened

Voters across Tennessee went to the polls on Tuesday as part of the 2026 midterm elections, and the governor's race quickly became one of the night's most closely watched contests in the South. The Associated Press called the race for Blackburn, reporting 950,259 votes for Blackburn and 902,546 for Green when 98.79% of precincts had reported. The Tennessean reported a similar picture in percentage terms, putting Blackburn at about 45.5% and Green at about 42.9%, fewer than 55,000 votes apart at that stage of the count. The difference between the raw-vote gap and the percentage gap reflects reporting at different moments in the evening, but both counts pointed in the same direction: a Blackburn win, by a margin far smaller than the comfortable Republican victories Tennessee has seen in recent statewide races.

Green conceded just after 10:30 p.m. CT in Chattanooga. In her concession speech, she told supporters: "Tonight, I didn't win for you." She added that she was "not going anywhere," a line that drew cheers from a crowd that had hoped for a historic upset. Green, a Memphis city councilwoman, came closer than any Democratic statewide candidate in Tennessee in decades, according to the campaign's own framing of the result, and her performance in the state's urban centres and among younger voters will be studied closely by Democrats looking for a path back in a deeply Republican state.

Background and Context

Blackburn, 74, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2019. Before that, she spent 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and four years in the Tennessee State Senate, building a record as one of the most reliably conservative voices in Washington. She entered the governor's race as the clear Republican favourite, succeeding Bill Lee, who could not seek another term because of term limits. Lee, also a Republican, had led the state through the pandemic, a series of tax cuts and a push to expand school choice, and Blackburn presented herself as a continuation of that direction, with a stronger emphasis on culture-war issues and on her close ties to the Trump administration.

Marsha Blackburn and the Tennessee Governor Race

The Tennessee governor race mattered beyond the state's borders because Blackburn's move from the Senate to the governor's mansion creates a vacancy in Washington at a moment when the balance of power in Congress is shifting. Blackburn must resign her Senate seat before she takes office as governor on January 16, 2027, and the process for choosing her successor is still to be settled. In Tennessee, the governor appoints a temporary replacement, and that appointee would serve until a special election can be held. The choice will therefore fall to Blackburn herself in her final days as a senator, or to her successor in the governor's office, depending on the exact timing of her resignation and swearing-in.

That Senate vacancy adds a layer of intrigue to an already consequential result. Blackburn's seat is one of the most safely Republican in the country, so few expect the party to lose it, but the identity of her successor, and the timing of the appointment, will matter for the Senate's work in early 2027. It will also shape the early months of Blackburn's governorship, as she balances the transition in Nashville with the politics of naming her own replacement in Washington.

Reactions and Quotes

Green's concession set the tone for the night's reactions. "Tonight, I didn't win for you," she told supporters in Chattanooga, before adding that she was "not going anywhere." The line was widely shared on social media by Democrats who saw her campaign as a sign of progress in Tennessee, even without a victory. Supporters praised her for running a competitive race in a state where Democrats have struggled for years, and for giving voters a clear alternative on health care and education.

Why It Matters

Blackburn's election matters for three reasons. First, it breaks a barrier that has stood since Tennessee became a state in 1796: no woman had ever been elected governor before. That milestone will be remembered long after the details of the vote count fade, and it places Blackburn alongside a growing number of women leading states across the country. Second, it keeps Tennessee's governorship in Republican hands at a time when Democrats made gains elsewhere in the 2026 midterms, giving the party a bright spot on an otherwise difficult night. Third, it creates a Senate vacancy that will need to be filled quickly, with implications for the balance of power and the legislative agenda in Washington.

What Happens Next

Blackburn will now begin the transition to the governor's office. She must resign from the Senate before her swearing-in on January 16, 2027, and the process for filling her Senate seat will be confirmed in the coming weeks. The final, certified vote count will also be completed, confirming the exact margin over Green and Hatley. In Nashville, Blackburn's transition team will begin work on her first budget, her cabinet appointments and her legislative priorities for the 2027 session of the Tennessee General Assembly.
