Amy Klobuchar has won Minnesota's governor race, becoming the first woman to lead the state. The Democratic United States senator defeated Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth in the election held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with the Associated Press calling the race late on Tuesday night and NBC News projecting her victory at 12:07 a.m. Eastern Time.

The result extends Democratic-Farmer-Labor control of the governor's office to a fifth consecutive term. Klobuchar, 66, was previously the first woman elected Hennepin County attorney (1998) and the first woman elected to the US Senate from Minnesota (2006). Her win adds the state's top office to that list, in a race shaped by a fraud scandal in state-run social services programmes.

Early results showed a clear margin: NBC put Klobuchar at 55.0 percent to Demuth's 43.1 percent at about 81 percent counted, the Washington Examiner reported 56.2 to 41.9 percent, and the AP showed 1,554,516 votes for Klobuchar at 97.44 percent of precincts reporting.

Key Points

• Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic US senator from Minnesota, won the governor race on November 3, 2026, defeating Republican Lisa Demuth.
• Klobuchar becomes Minnesota's first woman governor, after earlier becoming the first woman Hennepin County attorney and the first woman US senator from the state.
• The Associated Press called the race late Tuesday, and NBC News projected the win at 12:07 a.m. Eastern Time, with Klobuchar leading by about 12 points in early counts.
• She succeeds outgoing Governor Tim Walz, who ended his bid for a third term in January after a fraud investigation into state-run social services programmes became a national story.
• Klobuchar's Senate seat will fall vacant, with the governor appointing a temporary senator until a special election in November 2027.

What Happened

Minnesota voters chose a successor to Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice-presidential nominee. Walz had sought a third term before abandoning the effort in January, after fraud investigations into state-run social services programmes became a national story.

Klobuchar entered as the best-known Democrat in the state, a three-term senator with a national profile from her 2020 presidential campaign. Demuth, the Republican House speaker, argued Minnesota needed a change of direction. On election night, the count moved steadily in Klobuchar's favour.

Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since Tim Pawlenty in 2006. That run continued on Tuesday, despite Republican hopes that frustration over the scandal and the cost of living would break the pattern.

Background and Context

The scandal reshaped the race. The fraud investigation dominated Minnesota politics for much of the year and gave Republicans their strongest argument for change. Klobuchar navigated that inheritance carefully: she is a Democrat, but she is not Walz, and her pitch rested on her Senate record and her Washington reputation for bipartisan work.

After working as a prosecutor, she won election as Hennepin County attorney in 1998, then her Senate seat in 2006, in both cases as the first woman from Minnesota to hold the office. She ran for president in 2020 before endorsing Joe Biden. Demuth offered a sharper break, arguing Democratic governance had failed on fraud oversight, public safety and affordability. That argument fell short by about 12 points.

Amy Klobuchar Minnesota Governor: What Her Victory Means

As Minnesota's first woman governor, Klobuchar will take office with a mandate that is both personal and partisan. Personally, she arrives with a statewide organisation, a fundraising network and relationships in Washington that few governors can match. Partisanly, her win keeps the governor's office in Democratic-Farmer-Labor hands for a fifth consecutive term.

The victory matters nationally too: governors often form the bench for future presidential candidates, and Klobuchar, herself a former candidate, will now govern rather than legislate from Washington.

For Minnesota, the immediate question is the fraud scandal. Klobuchar will inherit the investigations, the reforms and the public scepticism that followed them, and her handling of state-programme oversight is likely to define her early months. She chose Fergus Falls Mayor Ben Schierer as her lieutenant-governor running mate, pairing her Twin Cities experience with a voice from greater Minnesota.

Reactions and Response

The projections drew swift national attention, because Minnesota was one of the most watched governor races of the night. The Associated Press call late on Tuesday and the NBC News projection just after midnight settled a contest framed as a test of whether the fraud scandal could end two decades of Democratic control of the governor's office.

Democrats presented the result as a vote for experience: Klobuchar's long Minnesota record, from county prosecutor to senator, proved difficult to overcome even when the governing party faced serious questions. Republicans had hoped Demuth's critique of the Walz administration would carry her to an upset; the early margin showed how far short it fell. Attention quickly turned to Washington, where her Senate departure triggers a vacancy process.

Why It Matters

First, it is historic: Minnesota had elected women to the Senate, Congress and statewide offices, but never a woman as governor until Tuesday. Second, it preserves a pattern: five consecutive Democratic-Farmer-Labor terms, no Republican governor since 2006. Third, it reshapes the Senate, whose vacant seat needs a temporary appointee until November 2027. Finally, it shows how scandals do, and do not, change elections: the investigation ended a governor's re-election bid, yet voters still chose the most established Democrat available.

What Happens Next

Klobuchar will now assemble an administration, set legislative priorities, and address the fraud investigations that dominated the campaign. In parallel, the governor will appoint a temporary senator until the November 2027 special election.

Demuth's defeat leaves Republicans to regroup: the party has not won the governor's office since 2006, and failing to capitalise on the scandal will prompt debate about candidates and messaging. For Klobuchar, the move is a new chapter: after two decades in Washington, she will govern from St. Paul, responsible for the budget, schools, health programmes and the oversight systems whose failures shaped this election.
