WASHINGTON — Jason Robertson turned a tight road game into Dallas Stars history on Tuesday night, scoring a natural hat trick in just 5 minutes 20 seconds early in the second period as the Stars held on for a 6-5 win over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. The Jason Robertson natural hat trick was the third-fastest natural hat trick in franchise history, and it changed the game in a blur: three goals, one scorer, and a home crowd that went from loud to stunned before the second period had barely settled. Dallas built a lead as large as four goals, then survived a furious late Washington rally to leave the capital with two points on November 3, 2026.

Robertson scored 23 seconds into the second period on the power play to make it 2-0, struck again at 3:18 to make it 3-0, and completed the hat trick at 5:43, firing a shot off the left post and through traffic to make it 4-0. The burst chased Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson, who had allowed four goals on just 11 shots. It was Robertson's seventh career regular-season hat trick, and its speed put him alongside the fastest scoring runs the franchise has ever produced.

Key Points

• Rantanen reached 800 NHL points, with 324 goals and 476 assists in his career.
• Washington rallied from 5-1 down, with Ryan Leonard scoring at 18:58 of the third to cut the lead to 6-5 before Dallas held on.

What Happened

Dallas took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, then exploded in the opening minutes of the second period. Robertson's power-play goal 23 seconds after the restart doubled the lead, and the building barely had time to reset before he scored again. At 3:18 of the period, Robertson made it 3-0, and the Capitals were already reeling. The third goal completed the natural hat trick, meaning three consecutive goals by the same player with no other scorer in between, and Thompson's night was over.

Dallas did not stop there. Hintz, who finished with a goal and two assists, added to the lead, and the Stars at one stage led 5-1. Kiviranta and Rantanen also scored, giving Dallas scoring from across its lineup rather than relying on Robertson alone. That depth mattered, because Washington refused to go away. The Capitals clawed back goal by goal, with Ryan Leonard and Jacob Chychrun each finishing with a goal and an assist, and Leonard's late goal at 18:58 of the third made it 6-5 with just over a minute remaining. The final seconds were tense, with Washington pressing for an equaliser, but Dallas closed out a win that had looked comfortable midway through the second period.

Background and Context

Natural hat tricks are rare enough on their own. To score three in a row, with no teammate or opponent scoring in between, requires a scorer in perfect rhythm and a game breaking his way. Robertson's 5:20 burst ranks behind only two in franchise history: Tom McCarthy's 5:15 in 1984 and Jamie Benn's 5:17 in 2018. That company matters, because McCarthy and Benn are names woven into the history of the franchise, and Robertson now sits just behind them on a list spanning more than four decades.

Robertson has built his reputation as one of the NHL's most reliable goal scorers, a winger who can finish from distance, find space in front of goal, and punish teams on the power play. His seventh career regular-season hat trick adds to a body of work that has made him central to everything Dallas does offensively. The game also carried a milestone for Rantanen, whose goal took him to 800 NHL points, a landmark that places him among the most productive players of his generation and a reminder of the depth of talent in the Dallas forward group.

Jason Robertson Natural Hat Trick: How the Five Minutes Unfolded

The sequence began with Dallas on the power play, and Robertson wasted no time. Twenty-three seconds into the second period, he scored to make it 2-0, giving the Stars a two-goal cushion and silencing much of the home crowd. Less than three minutes later, Robertson struck again, at 3:18, to make it 3-0. The speed of the second goal mattered as much as the goal itself: Washington had no time to regroup, no time to settle its defence, and no answer for a scorer who seemed to be everywhere the puck was.

Reactions and Significance

Games like this tend to be remembered for one player, and this one will be remembered for Robertson. A natural hat trick in just over five minutes is the kind of performance that travels beyond the two teams involved, because it is easy to understand and hard to do. Fans, broadcasters and fellow players all recognise the difficulty of scoring three times in a row at NHL speed, against NHL goaltending, in a hostile building.

Why It Matters

This game matters for Dallas because it showed what the Stars can do when their best scorer gets hot and the rest of the lineup follows. It matters for Robertson because hat tricks change how opponents defend him, opening space for linemates. And it matters for Washington, who nearly erased a four-goal deficit and must now carry that urgency from the opening faceoff.

What Happens Next

Dallas will look to build on the win and Robertson's form, while protecting leads better than it did in the third period, when 5-1 became 6-5. Washington will look to start faster and bring its late urgency from the opening faceoff.
