The Peace River flood at Arcadia, Florida, is heading for a major crest above the river's 1998 record, with forecasters warning that up to 60 homes in River Acres could flood as the swollen river keeps rising. The National Weather Service Tampa Bay forecast puts the Peace River at Arcadia at 16.5 feet on Thursday evening, passing the 16.0-foot crest of February 21, 1998. Flood stage at Arcadia is 11.0 feet, so the forecast crest would leave the river five and a half feet above the level at which flooding begins.

The gauge at Arcadia, on State Road 70 in DeSoto County, read 13.4 feet at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, November 3, already more than two feet above flood stage. That reading followed five to ten inches of rain across west-central Florida.

Key Points

• The Peace River at Arcadia is forecast to crest at 16.5 feet on Thursday evening, above its 16.0-foot crest of February 21, 1998.
• At 16 feet, up to 60 homes at River Acres flood, and the Woman's Club and American Legion are also affected.
• The gauge read 13.4 feet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, well above the 11.0-foot flood stage.
• DeSoto County roads are already under water, and the sheriff's office urges drivers not to cross flooded stretches.
• Horse Creek near Arcadia was forecast to crest at 14.6 feet on Wednesday morning; the Peace River at Zolfo Springs reached 16.6 feet, matching its January 26, 1958 crest.

What Happened

Days of heavy rain across west-central Florida pushed the Peace River and its tributaries steadily upward, and by Tuesday evening the Arcadia gauge had passed flood stage by a wide margin. The forecast then carried the river higher still, to a Thursday evening crest of 16.5 feet. At 16 feet, forecasters say, up to 60 homes at River Acres flood, and the Woman's Club and American Legion are also impacted, so the coming crest threatens community buildings as well as houses.

The rise has been widespread. Horse Creek near Arcadia was forecast to crest at 14.6 feet on Wednesday morning, adding pressure before the main crest arrives. At Zolfo Springs, further up the Peace River, the river reached 16.6 feet, matching the crest of January 26, 1958. When an upstream gauge matches a mark set nearly seven decades ago, it is a clear sign this is not an ordinary high-water event.

Flood warnings remain in effect for rivers in DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee and Hillsborough counties. In DeSoto County, roads are already under water, and the sheriff's office is urging drivers not to cross flooded stretches. Water over a road can hide a washed-out surface or a current strong enough to carry a vehicle.

Background and Context

The Peace River drains a broad, low-lying basin in west-central Florida, where heavy rain can collect quickly and move slowly downstream. Flood stage, the 11.0-foot mark at Arcadia, is the level at which forecasters expect water to begin causing problems for nearby land, roads and property. A crest is the highest level the river is expected to reach during a flood event, and it is the number residents, road crews and emergency managers plan around.

The 1998 comparison gives the forecast its historical weight. That 16.0-foot crest has stood as the modern reference point for this gauge for nearly three decades. Passing it would mean water reaching places not reached in living memory for many residents. This flood is also part of a broader week of flooding across Florida, covered in our reports on nine Palm Beach schools closing on November 4 and Brevard schools closing on Tuesday.

Peace River Flood: What the Forecast Means for Arcadia

For residents near the river, the headline figure for River Acres is the clearest guide, and the forecast crest sits half a foot above the 16-foot threshold. That does not mean every home will flood to the same depth, because ground height and drainage vary. It does mean households in the lowest ground should treat the forecast as a direct warning, keep valuables and important documents above the expected water level where possible, and be ready to leave promptly if local officials advise it.

Road access is likely to be the first everyday problem for many people, and it may last longer than the crest itself. More closures should be expected as the river rises toward Thursday evening, and even after the crest, water drains slowly from flat land, so roads can remain closed or damaged after the gauge begins to fall. Anyone travelling through DeSoto County should check local road information before setting out.

Reactions and Official Guidance

The official guidance has been consistent and practical. The National Weather Service has provided the forecast crest, the current gauge reading and the flood warnings covering DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee and Hillsborough counties, giving residents and emergency managers a shared set of numbers to plan around. The DeSoto County sheriff's office has urged drivers not to cross flooded stretches, whether the water looks shallow or still.

Why It Matters

The crest matters for three reasons. First, it threatens homes directly, with up to 60 River Acres homes at risk at 16 feet and a forecast crest above that level. Second, it threatens access, because flooded roads can cut off neighbourhoods and delay emergency help even for people whose homes stay dry. Third, it sets a historical marker: passing the 1998 crest at Arcadia, after Zolfo Springs matched its 1958 crest, would place this flood among the most serious in the modern record for this river system.

What Happens Next

Under the current forecast, the next key moments are the Horse Creek crest on Wednesday morning and the Peace River crest at Arcadia on Thursday evening. Between those points, gauge readings and any changes to the forecast will show whether the river is rising faster or slower than expected. After the crest, attention will turn to how quickly the river falls, which roads reopen and what damage has been done. Residents should keep following National Weather Service forecasts and DeSoto County updates and avoid flooded roads.
