Toronto — Nick Schmaltz scored on the power play with 6:48 left in regulation to give the Utah Mammoth a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The Mammoth Maple Leafs 3-2 result moved Utah to 10-6-0 and handed Toronto, now 8-7-2, its third loss in four games.

Schmaltz buried the winner at 13:12 of the third period, finishing a scramble in the crease after Toronto goalie Sergei Bobrovsky had made a big stop on Clayton Keller. Keller created the first chance, the rebound stayed alive, and Schmaltz reacted fastest. It was also a fitting reward for a power play that has led the NHL this season, with Utah recording its league-leading 19th and 20th power-play goals in this game.

Toronto had fought back to level the score at 2-2. Jack Roslovic scored twice for the Maple Leafs, both times off assists from Auston Matthews, and his second goal — a breakaway backhand at 9:05 of the third period — lifted a loud home crowd. But the lead lasted only a few minutes before Utah's power play struck again.

What Happened

Utah opened the scoring through Dylan Guenther and extended the lead when Andrew Peeke found the net, building a 2-1 advantage that reflected a strong start on the road. Toronto refused to go away. Roslovic cut into the deficit and then, in the third period, produced a moment of individual quality to level the game. His breakaway backhand, set up by Matthews, made it 2-2 and changed the feeling inside the arena completely.

The decisive sequence began with Utah on the power play. Keller drove toward the net and forced Bobrovsky into a difficult save. The puck did not clear, the scramble continued in the crease, and Schmaltz pounced. It was not a clean finish. It was a goalscorer's goal — a willingness to go to the hard area, stay with the play after the first shot was stopped, and react faster than the defenders around him.

The goaltending battle was central to the story. Bobrovsky faced more shots and made 33 saves, including the initial stop on Keller that briefly kept Toronto level. Cossa, with 27 saves, was steadier when the game tightened in the third period. In a one-goal game, that difference — one extra save, one extra loose puck finished — was the margin between a point and a regulation loss for the home side.

Background/Context

Utah arrived in Toronto with a power play that has set the early pace in the NHL. Reaching 19 and then 20 power-play goals underlined how central the man advantage is to the Mammoth's attack, forcing opponents to choose between playing aggressively and risking a penalty, or sitting back and giving skilled players space.

For Toronto, the result continued an uneven stretch. Three losses in four games is not a crisis in early November, but it is a pattern that will concern a team with high expectations. The Maple Leafs have shown they can score — Roslovic's two goals and Matthews' two assists are evidence of that — but they have also shown a vulnerability to giving up timely goals at the wrong moment.

Mammoth Maple Leafs 3-2: How the Power Play Decided It

The Mammoth Maple Leafs 3-2 scoreline tells a simple story, but the power play explains it. Keller's three assists and Sergachev's two assists show how the puck moves through Utah's top unit, with different players creating chances and different players finishing them. That variety makes the unit harder to defend, because opponents cannot simply take away one shooter or one passer.

Toronto's penalty kill, by contrast, was left to defend a scramble rather than a set play on the winner. Bobrovsky's first save was excellent, but the second chance was the problem. Good penalty killing is often about the first clearance after a save, and on this occasion the puck stayed in the danger area long enough for Schmaltz to finish, with less than seven minutes left and the game tied.

Reactions/Quotes

The reaction on the ice after Schmaltz's goal said plenty about what it meant. Utah's players converged on the scorer, while Toronto's bench faced the familiar task of regrouping with time still left on the clock. The home crowd, which had roared when Roslovic tied the game, fell quiet as the visitors celebrated a winner that had come against the run of play in the third period.

Why It Matters

This result matters for both teams, but in opposite ways. For Utah, it is evidence that a strong power play can travel. Scoring 19 and 20 power-play goals for the season, and winning on the road in Toronto, suggests a team whose main weapon works in hostile buildings as well as at home. The 10-6-0 record also gives Utah a cushion in the early standings race, where every regulation win matters.

For Toronto, the 8-7-2 record and a third loss in four games raise questions about consistency. The Maple Leafs have the quality to beat anyone, but they must turn more performances into points after fighting back to 2-2.

What Happens Next

Utah will look to build on this road win and keep its power play at the top of the league's rankings, while tightening up at even strength so future games do not depend so heavily on the man advantage.

Toronto, meanwhile, will want a quick response. The immediate task is to stop three losses in four games from becoming a longer slide. That means better discipline at key moments, a penalty kill that clears the first rebound, and a defence that gives Bobrovsky a cleaner view on second chances. The attacking talent is not the problem; turning strong individual nights into team wins is the next step.
