Democrat Aaron Ford has won the Nevada governor's race, unseating Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo and becoming the first Black governor in Nevada's history, in one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 midterm elections. The Associated Press, NBC News and The New York Times called the race for Ford, the state's attorney general since 2019, after a campaign fought largely over affordability, housing, health care and the direction of a battleground state that Donald Trump carried in 2024. With about 85 per cent of the vote reported, Ford led with 491,891 votes, or 51.52 per cent, to Lombardo's 423,205 votes, or 44.33 per cent, with 84.89 per cent of precincts reporting. The result flips a governor's seat in a year of sweeping Democratic gains, and it ends Lombardo's bid for a second term.

Ford, 54, will also become the first Black governor of a state west of the Mississippi River. He was previously Nevada's first Black Senate majority leader and its first Black attorney general, and he was first elected to the state legislature in 2012 after working in private legal practice and teaching mathematics.

What Happened

Nevadans voted on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, in a midterm election that put a handful of governor's races under national scrutiny, and Nevada was near the top of that list. Pre-election forecasts were split, reflecting a genuinely competitive contest in a state known for close elections and a large mail-ballot count. One late projection gave Ford only a narrow 49.4 per cent to 48.3 per cent edge, which helps explain why the race was rated among the most competitive in the country. On election night, however, the count moved steadily in Ford's favour, and the major race callers projected him as the winner as results came in from the state's population centres.

The Associated Press figures told a clear story once most precincts had reported. Ford's lead of more than 68,000 votes, a margin of just over seven percentage points, was large enough for the Associated Press, NBC News and The New York Times to call the race, even though Nevada's counting of mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can continue for days and final certified totals may shift slightly. The result was a decisive rather than a knife-edge win, giving Democrats a marquee pickup in the West.

Background/Context

Nevada has long been one of America's true swing states, and its politics are shaped by an economy built on tourism, gaming, hospitality and, increasingly, technology and logistics. Las Vegas and Reno drive much of the state's employment, and when visitor numbers fall or prices rise, the effects are felt quickly in household budgets and state revenues. That context mattered enormously in 2026. Ford blamed the state's economic difficulties on Lombardo and on Trump, pointing to some of the highest petrol prices in the country, at more than $5 per gallon in places, and to declining tourism that he linked to tariffs and immigration crackdowns.

Aaron Ford Nevada Governor Win: What the Historic Victory Means

The Aaron Ford Nevada governor win matters for reasons that go beyond the immediate transfer of power in Carson City. First, it is a historic first, placing Ford among a small group of Black governors in American history in a state whose population has become increasingly diverse. Second, it gives Democrats control of the governor's office in a critical battleground state two years before the next presidential election, when Nevada will again be fiercely contested. Ford will also enter office with Democrats already holding majorities in both chambers of the state legislature, according to election-night reporting, which could give him a clearer path to pass his agenda, although disagreements over taxes, education spending and public safety are still likely.

Reactions/Quotes

Race callers moved quickly once the pattern of results was clear, with the Associated Press, NBC News and The New York Times all projecting Ford as the winner. National coverage emphasised the historic nature of the result, describing Ford as Nevada's first Black governor and noting that Lombardo had lost in one of the country's most competitive races. Democratic supporters presented the win as evidence that the party's message on affordability and health care had cut through in a swing state, while the result was also read as another sign of the difficult midterm environment for Republicans.

Why It Matters

The governorship matters because the governor sets the agenda for the state budget, signs or vetoes legislation, and represents Nevada in negotiations with Washington and neighbouring states over water, energy and economic development. Ford's stated priorities — affordability, housing, education, health care and protecting access to abortion — will now shape that agenda. His pledge to revive vetoed bills on corporate home purchases and prescription drug prices could have direct effects on housing costs and household health spending, two issues voters cited most often during the campaign.

What Happens Next

Ford will take office in January 2027, when Lombardo's term ends, and the transition period will be closely watched. His team will need to assemble a cabinet, prepare a budget proposal and decide which campaign pledges to pursue first. The bills he has promised to revive, including limits on corporate home buying and Medicaid drug-price powers, are likely to be among the early priorities, along with measures on housing supply, education funding and health care.
