Democrat Eli Savit will be Michigan's next attorney general after defeating Republican Doug Lloyd in the 2026 Michigan attorney general race, a contest that made state history as the first time two sitting county prosecutors faced each other for the job. The Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that Savit had won, and multiple outlets, including CNN and the Associated Press, called the race for the Washtenaw County prosecutor.

At around 2:30 a.m. on November 4, Savit led Lloyd by 51.8% of the vote to 45.5%, a margin that left little doubt about the outcome as counting continued. The result keeps the Michigan attorney general's office in Democratic hands and hands one of the state's most powerful legal jobs to a prosecutor who has built his public profile in Washtenaw County since first winning election there in 2020.

Key Points

• Democrat Eli Savit, 43, the Washtenaw County prosecutor, will become Michigan's next attorney general.
• He defeated Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd, 60, by 51.8% to 45.5% in the early count reported on November 4, 2026.
• Multiple outlets, including CNN and the Associated Press, called the race for Savit.
• It was the first time in Michigan history that two sitting county prosecutors ran against each other for attorney general.
• Savit succeeds Dana Nessel, who could not seek another term because of Michigan's constitutional term limits.

What Happened

Voters in Michigan went to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as part of the nationwide midterm elections, and the attorney general race was one of the state's most closely watched statewide contests. By the early hours of Wednesday morning, the shape of the result was clear. Savit, the Democratic nominee, had opened a lead of more than six percentage points over Lloyd, his Republican rival, and news organisations began calling the race in his favour.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Wednesday that Savit would be Michigan's next attorney general. The Associated Press and CNN also called the race for Savit, according to the Free Press report, giving the result the backing of the country's main election-calling organisations. At around 2:30 a.m. on November 4, the reported count put Savit on 51.8% and Lloyd on 45.5%, with the remaining share going to other candidates or still to be accounted for in the final certified totals.

For Savit, the win is the next step in a county prosecution career. He was first elected as Washtenaw County prosecutor in 2020, and he has held that office ever since. Lloyd, by contrast, has been Eaton County prosecutor since 2013, giving the race an unusual symmetry: two men who run prosecutor's offices in different parts of Michigan, each asking voters to promote him to the state's top law-enforcement job.

Background: How Michigan Reached This Race

Savit succeeds Dana Nessel, a Democrat first elected as Michigan attorney general in 2018. Nessel could not seek another four-year term because Michigan's constitution imposes term limits on the office, and so the 2026 race was always going to produce a new attorney general, whatever the result. Open-seat races of this kind often draw strong fields, and this one was no exception.

That breadth helps explain why the campaign focused so heavily on priorities rather than personality alone. Savit pledged to tackle what he described as artificial intelligence threats to Michigan consumers, pointing in particular to so-called "surveillance pricing" by retailers, in which prices can be adjusted using data about individual shoppers. He also pledged to move quickly to issue regulations under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act, signalling that consumer protection would be an early and central part of his time in office.

Eli Savit Michigan Attorney General Win: What It Means

The Eli Savit Michigan attorney general win matters first because of continuity and change together. The office stays with a Democrat, so Michigan's legal posture is unlikely to reverse overnight, but the person at the top changes, and with that change come new priorities. Savit's emphasis on artificial intelligence, pricing practices and consumer protection suggests an office that will pay close attention to how technology and data are used in everyday commerce.

The margin also matters. A lead of 51.8% to 45.5% in the early count is a clear win, not a recount contest, and it gives Savit a mandate that is harder to dispute. In a state as closely divided as Michigan, where statewide races are often decided by narrow margins, a win of more than six points stands out and suggests that voters responded to the campaign Savit ran.

Reactions

The most authoritative reaction so far is the result itself and the calls that followed it. The Detroit Free Press reported Savit's victory on Wednesday morning, and CNN and the Associated Press called the race for him, a combination that normally settles a statewide contest in the eyes of the public and the political world. No concession statement from Lloyd was included in the initial reporting, and further statements from both campaigns are expected as the final results are confirmed.

Why It Matters

State attorneys general have become increasingly powerful figures in American politics, and Michigan is no exception. They can sue companies, challenge federal policies, defend state laws and set enforcement priorities that touch millions of people. In a state of about 10 million residents, the attorney general's choices on consumer protection, public safety and civil rights can have a direct effect on daily life, even for voters who rarely follow the office closely.

What Happens Next

The next step is formal: the votes must be canvassed and certified, and the final certified totals will replace the early reported figures. That process is routine, but it is the step that turns an election-night call into an official result. Once certified, Savit will prepare to take office as Michigan's next attorney general, succeeding Nessel when her term ends.

Early attention will focus on his transition and his first decisions, including staffing, enforcement priorities and any early action on consumer protection regulations. His campaign promises give a clear preview of where he intends to start, but the test of any new attorney general comes in the cases chosen, the settlements reached and the positions taken in court.
