Wall Street staged a powerful rally on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as investors welcomed the end of election uncertainty after Democrats seized control of both the Senate and the House in the November 3 midterm elections. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 1,200 points in morning trading, reversing an overnight slide in futures and turning one of the most politically charged weeks of the year into a broad advance for American stocks.

By 09:46 a.m. Eastern Time, the Dow was up 1,203.07 points, or 2.30 percent, at 52,989.79. The S&P 500 had gained 129.88 points, or 1.72 percent, to 7,698.80, while the Nasdaq Composite had climbed 540.38 points, or 2.13 percent, to 25,912.39. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 3.6 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, a sign that the move was broad rather than driven by a handful of giant companies.

What Happened

Trading opened with conviction. After a night in which futures had pointed lower as early results showed the scale of the Democratic sweep, cash markets turned decisively higher once Wall Street had time to assess what divided government would mean. Investors, in the dominant reading of the morning, concluded that a Democratic Congress facing a Republican president would make sweeping new policy changes harder to pass, reducing the risk of sharp turns in taxes, spending and regulation.

The gains were led by the largest technology companies. Amazon jumped 7.1 percent, Alphabet gained 3.4 percent and Meta added 1.6 percent, helping to lift the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. The same mega-cap names had been at the centre of the recent market turbulence, when doubts about artificial intelligence spending pushed the Nasdaq 100 into correction territory a day earlier.

Not every corner of the market joined in. Data-centre operators fell sharply: IREN, Hut 8, Applied Digital and Core Scientific dropped between 1.2 percent and 13 percent. Traders linked the declines to fears of tighter artificial intelligence regulation after Democratic gains in states with large data-centre footprints, including Texas and Georgia. Defence stocks also fell sharply, with Northrop Grumman, RTX and Lockheed Martin under pressure as President Donald Trump’s $1.5 trillion budget request now faces a much tougher path through Congress.

Background/Context

The rally came after a bruising stretch for markets. On Tuesday, November 3, global markets slid as Americans voted, with technology stocks extending a retreat driven by doubts about artificial intelligence spending. The Nasdaq 100 entered technical correction territory, down 10 percent from its record highs, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell for a third straight session. South Korea’s Kospi fell nearly 4 percent, Taiwan’s Taiex dropped about 3.6 percent, and Europe’s STOXX 600 slipped 0.4 percent.

Wednesday’s reversal therefore carried extra significance. It suggested that, once the initial shock faded, American investors read the result less as a threat to corporate earnings and more as a cap on policy volatility. A divided Washington, in this view, limits sharp shifts in either direction — no sweeping new spending programme, but also no sweeping deregulation — and markets often reward that kind of predictability, at least in the short term.

Wall Street Rally: Why a Divided Washington Lifted Stocks

The Wall Street rally fits a familiar market pattern. When control of Washington is split between the parties, investors often assume that the boldest proposals from either side will struggle to become law. For companies, that can mean fewer surprises on taxes, fewer abrupt regulatory changes and a clearer planning horizon.

Reactions/Quotes

Citi Research’s Scott Chornert described the result as a “clearing event” now that election uncertainty is behind markets, capturing the sense on trading floors that the removal of one big unknown mattered more than the precise partisan outcome. The phrase spread quickly through morning market commentary because it matched the price action: a broad advance, led by the largest stocks, with advancing issues comfortably ahead of decliners.

Why It Matters

The rally matters for three reasons. First, it restores some confidence after a volatile week in which the Nasdaq 100 entered correction territory and global markets slid on Election Day. A broad advance, with most stocks rising, is healthier than a rally carried by only a few names, and Wednesday morning delivered that breadth.

Second, it sets the terms of the next policy fight. The fate of the president’s $1.5 trillion defence budget request, the future of clean-energy incentives, and the shape of any artificial intelligence regulation will now be negotiated between a Republican White House and a Democratic Congress. Markets will watch those negotiations closely, and the stocks that rose or fell on Wednesday are likely to stay sensitive to every signal from Capitol Hill.

What Happens Next

Traders will now turn to the economic calendar. The October employment report, due Friday, November 6, is forecast to show payrolls up 65,000 after a 29,000 rise in September, with unemployment unchanged at 4.2 percent. The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate in the 3.75 to 4.00 percent range on October 28.

On Capitol Hill, attention will shift to leadership and the legislative agenda. House Republicans plan leadership elections on November 10, and the new Democratic majorities will begin setting out their priorities for the session that begins in January. For markets, the key questions are practical: which spending bills advance, which regulations are tightened, and whether the two parties can agree on funding the government without another standoff.
