The Golden State Warriors have stopped paying Kristaps Porzingis, ruling that the veteran centre is not rendering services while he remains away from the team dealing with a health issue, according to a report published on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The decision puts a $20 million salary, a looming trade deadline and a possible retirement at the centre of one of the most unusual contract disputes of the NBA season.

ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater reported the payment stoppage, citing sources. Porzingis, 31, is leaning toward retiring from the NBA, the report said, leaving Golden State to resolve an expensive contract for a player who is not on the floor.

Key Points

• The Warriors are not paying Porzingis on his $20 million salary, ruling he is not rendering services while away with a health issue.
• Each missed game costs him $218,341, or 1/91.6 of his salary, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
• His $20 million salary still counts against the Warriors' salary cap, luxury tax and apron.
• Golden State can still trade his contract before the February 11 trade deadline, even without paying him.
• Porzingis is leaning toward retiring, and the Warriors will keep exploring trade avenues.

What Happened

According to the ESPN report, carried by NBC Sports Bay Area, the Warriors have taken the position that Porzingis is not rendering services because he remains away from the team while dealing with a health issue. On that basis, the team is not delivering payments on his $20 million salary.

The financial scale is stark. Marks calculated that the failure-to-render-services ruling costs Porzingis $218,341 per game. Over a long absence that figure would quickly run into millions of dollars, even though the contract has not been terminated and Porzingis remains, on paper, a Golden State player.

Stopping the payments does not remove the contract from the Warriors' books. His salary continues to count against the cap, luxury tax and apron, the NBA's tiered spending thresholds that restrict how teams over certain payroll levels can build their rosters. Golden State is therefore paying the competitive price of the deal in roster flexibility while not actually paying the player, though it may still trade the contract before February 11.

Background/Context

This is not the first time Porzingis's future in Golden State has been in question. Charania originally reported on October 21 that the Warriors were exploring trade routes for the veteran centre, and the latest report said the team has had little luck moving the contract in recent weeks. A $20 million deal for a player who is away from the team, dealing with a health issue and leaning toward retirement is a hard contract for any rival to take on without protections or added incentives.

Porzingis arrived in the NBA as one of the most intriguing big men of his generation, but his career has repeatedly been interrupted by health problems. For Golden State, the timing matters: a $20 million contract producing no on-court return is a significant burden for a team trying to stay competitive while managing a payroll near the league's most restrictive thresholds.

Warriors Stop Paying Kristaps Porzingis: What the Rules Say

At the heart of the dispute is the NBA's failure-to-render-services concept. In broad terms, a team can withhold pay when a player is not providing the services required under his contract, subject to the standard player contract and the league's collective bargaining agreement. The Warriors' ruling, as reported, is that Porzingis's continued absence while dealing with a health issue meets that test.

Such determinations are rarely straightforward. Health-related absences are normally handled through medical evaluation and injury provisions, and players have avenues to challenge a team's decision through the players' union. The reporting so far does not detail any formal challenge by Porzingis or his representatives, nor does it specify the health issue involved. At $218,341 per game, the withheld amount grows with every game missed.

Reactions/Quotes

Neither the Warriors nor Porzingis had issued a public statement on the payment stoppage in the reporting available at the time of publication, and no direct quotes from the player or the team were included in the ESPN report as summarised. The account rests on sourcing from Charania and Slater, with the per-game figure supplied by Marks, and should be read as a sourced report rather than a confirmed announcement by either side.

Contract disputes like this are usually handled quietly, through team officials, agents and league channels. Around the league, the case will be watched closely, because teams, agents and the union all have an interest in how such a ruling is applied.

Why It Matters

For the Warriors, the dispute is about more than one player's pay. A $20 million contract sitting on the cap, tax and apron ledgers without any on-court return limits what Golden State can do elsewhere, whether adding depth, making another trade or staying below a spending threshold that would trigger further restrictions. Resolving the Porzingis contract is therefore a roster-building priority, not just a bookkeeping matter.

For Porzingis, withheld pay, the prospect of retirement and uncertainty over his health point toward a career crossroads. For the wider NBA, the case is a reminder of how quickly a major contract can become a problem when health intervenes, and how sharply the league's rules for extended absences are tested in cases exactly like this one.

What Happens Next

The immediate question is whether Porzingis, his representatives or the players' union will challenge the Warriors' ruling, and whether any challenge becomes public. A negotiated settlement, such as a buyout or a revised payment schedule, is a common way out of disputes of this kind.

The trade market is the second track: Golden State can move the contract before February 11 if a rival decides the price in draft picks or other assets makes the risk worthwhile. The third possibility is retirement. If Porzingis steps away, the contractual and cap consequences would depend on terms agreed with the Warriors and the league. Until one path is taken, the standoff continues, game by game, at $218,341 a game.
