Washington, D.C. — Fellow Republicans have blamed President Donald Trump himself for the party's loss of its House and Senate majorities in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, according to a BBC report published on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Republican officials and strategists told the BBC that unpopular policies, low approval ratings, and a focus on the Iran war and Washington construction, rather than voters' concerns, led directly to the defeat.

Key Points

• Fellow Republicans blamed Donald Trump himself for losing the House and Senate majorities in the November 3, 2026 midterms, the BBC reported on November 4.
• Texas Republican lobbyist Bill Miller told the BBC: "It's his fault. No one else is to blame here. This is a complete, total rejection of President Trump."
• Party officials cited unpopular policies, low approval ratings, and a focus on the Iran war and Washington construction instead of voters' concerns.
• Trump said on Truth Social that his name was not on the ballots, later acknowledged the results, and noted midterms are typically hard for incumbents.
• Trump told The Wall Street Journal the Iran war was one factor, and said he would do it again.

What Happened

The BBC report, published the day after the elections, gathered reaction from Republican officials and strategists who spoke with unusual candour about the defeat. Democrats won control of both chambers on November 3, ending Republican majorities in the House and Senate and reshaping the balance of power for Trump's final two years.

According to the BBC, party insiders pointed to three linked explanations: unpopular policies, above all tariff costs and the disruption of a war now in its ninth month; a low approval rating that left candidates unable to borrow the president's popularity; and a focus on the Iran war and Washington construction, including the White House ballroom, while voters worried about the cost of living.

The most quoted voice was Bill Miller, a Texas Republican lobbyist. "It's his fault. No one else is to blame here," Miller told the BBC. "This is a complete, total rejection of President Trump. It's a catastrophe of the first order. No one expected things to turn out this way." The language was remarkable for its bluntness and its source: a veteran of Texas Republican politics blaming the president, not individual candidates or campaign tactics.

Background: How the Midterms Turned Against Republicans

Midterm elections are historically punishing for the party holding the White House, and Trump later leaned on that pattern. But the scale of this defeat went beyond the usual midterm penalty, according to the BBC's accounts. Voters delivered their verdict against rising prices, a Middle East war that has driven up fuel costs, and a bruising debate over tariffs, immigration enforcement, and the cost of living. Post-election analysis has pointed again and again to the same driver: the economy.

The Iran war loomed over the campaign in a way few foreign conflicts do in a midterm. The conflict, which began on February 28, 2026, has disrupted energy markets and consumed the administration's attention for months. Trump and Vice President JD Vance have both acknowledged that the war played a role. Vance wrote on X on November 4 that "the reason we lost is the war" — a policy framing, not a leadership one. The BBC report goes further, recording fellow Republicans blaming Trump personally.

Republicans Blame Trump: The Party Turns on Its Leader

The phrase "Republicans blame Trump" captures a moment that would have been difficult to imagine even weeks ago. For most of his second term, public criticism of Trump from within his own party has been rare and carefully worded, with dissenters often facing swift retaliation. The midterm defeat appears to have loosened that discipline, at least in private conversations with reporters.

Texas looms large in that story. The state has long been a Republican stronghold, and Miller's intervention carries weight because it comes from a lobbyist steeped in Texas Republican politics, not a long-standing critic. His verdict that "no one expected things to turn out this way" also speaks to a failure of anticipation: internal polling left senior Republicans unprepared for the scale of November 3. The White House ballroom, whose final beam was installed on November 4, became for critics a symbol of misplaced priorities.

Reactions: Trump, His Supporters, and the Party's Next Steps

Trump's response unfolded in stages. On Truth Social, he first noted that his name did not appear on the ballots — implying the result was a verdict on candidates rather than on him. He later acknowledged the results and noted that midterms are typically difficult for the incumbent's party. In a separate interview with The Wall Street Journal, he identified the Iran war as one factor — and said he would do it again.

Democrats have moved quickly to use their new majorities. Senate leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to use Congress's power of the purse to press for an end to the Iran war, while House leader Hakeem Jeffries, expected to become speaker on January 3, 2027, has promised aggressive oversight. The Republican blame game will influence whether the White House can find Republican partners willing to negotiate, or whether the party fractures.

Why It Matters

Fellow Republicans blaming Trump weakens his authority inside his own party at the moment he needs it most. With Democrats controlling both chambers, Trump will need Republican unity to sustain vetoes, block investigations, and confirm remaining nominees in the lame-duck session. It also argues for a change of direction that will shape the contest for the party's future, including positioning for 2028.

What Happens Next

The immediate test comes in the lame-duck session, when the outgoing Republican Senate majority will try to confirm pending judicial nominees before Democrats take control on January 3, 2027. Beyond that, Republican leaders must decide whether to press Trump to change course — and whether a president who says he would do it all again is willing to listen.
