President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that he will stay out of the race to succeed House Speaker Mike Johnson as House Republican leader, and he cast fresh doubt on whether Vice President JD Vance will run for president in 2028. Speaking at the White House ballroom construction site, Trump praised Johnson, denied pushing him aside, and said the contest would be decided without his intervention. The remarks came a day after Democrats swept both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

Key Points

• Trump said he will stay out of the House Republican leadership race: “We’ll stay out of it.”
• Speaker Mike Johnson told staff on Wednesday morning he will not run for minority leader in the new Congress.
• House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan are vying for the post; House Republicans vote on November 10.
• On JD Vance’s future, Trump said: “Maybe he won’t run. I don’t know who’s going to run.”
• Trump called Vance’s claim that the Iran war cost Republicans the midterms “largely true,” but said he would do it again.

What Happened

Trump spoke to reporters at the White House ballroom construction site, where he had marked the final beam of the new ballroom a day earlier. Asked about the leadership contest, he was direct. “We’ll stay out of it,” he said, adding: “The speaker was fantastic. The people under him were fantastic. All good people.” He also denied asking Johnson to step aside, as speculation swirled about his role in the speaker’s decision.

Johnson had told his staff on Wednesday morning that he will not seek the minority leader’s job in the new Congress, ending a leadership tenure that began in October 2023. With Democrats taking the House, the Republican leader becomes minority leader. The contest is now between Scalise and Jordan, and House Republicans will choose in an internal election on November 10. Hours before Trump spoke, Vance had posted on X: “The reason we lost is the war.” Asked about Vance’s future, Trump offered no endorsement or prediction, saying: “You can have a lot of people running. Maybe nobody’s going to run.” He added that he had spoken with Vance.

Background and Context

Johnson’s decision followed a bruising election night. Democrats won both chambers on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ending Republican control of the House and forcing a leadership reset. Johnson, who became speaker in October 2023 after Kevin McCarthy’s removal, led House Republicans through a turbulent period. His announcement closed that chapter, though he keeps his own seat: he won re-election in Louisiana’s 4th District and is not resigning from Congress.

The next leader must hold together a caucus that has lost its majority, manage relations with a president whose agenda now faces a Democratic House, and prepare for 2028. Scalise, a veteran of House leadership, and Jordan, a prominent conservative voice, represent different wings of the party. The November 10 vote will be the first test of where the caucus stands after the defeat, and Vance’s blunt war comments have added a second fault line to the party’s post-election debate.

Trump House GOP Leadership Race: Why Trump Is Staying Out

Trump’s decision to stay out is itself notable. His endorsement has carried enormous weight in the party, so stepping back leaves the November 10 vote to the members and avoids blame for the outcome in a divided caucus. His praise for Johnson also closed the door on any suggestion that the speaker was forced out. The timing helped: Johnson announced in the morning, and Trump spoke later the same day, shaping the story while the contest was still forming. Whether his neutrality holds until the vote will be watched closely.

Reactions and Quotes

Trump’s words dominated the day. On the race: “We’ll stay out of it.” On Johnson: “fantastic.” On Vance: “Maybe he won’t run. I don’t know who’s going to run.” On the war, he said Vance’s assessment was “largely true” because the war drove gasoline prices up “a little bit, short term,” but insisted he would do it again and “would have done nothing different,” saying Iran’s military, navy, air force and anti-aircraft defences are gone. He also said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is “doing a very good job” and that he has no plans to replace him, shutting down speculation about further administration changes.

Why It Matters

The race will decide who leads House Republicans through two years in the minority and into the next presidential election. The minority leader will negotiate with a Democratic speaker, defend the administration’s record, and try to rebuild a majority for 2028. A contested Scalise-Jordan race could expose divisions the defeat has deepened, and Trump’s neutrality means those divisions play out without his public guidance, at least for now. His comments on Vance matter separately: Vance is widely seen as a leading 2028 contender, and a president publicly doubting whether his vice president will run is extraordinary. It guarantees Vance’s future will dominate Republican discussion for months.

What Happens Next

House Republicans vote on November 10. The winner becomes minority leader when the new Congress convenes and must immediately organise a caucus searching for a path back to the majority. Attention will focus on whether Trump keeps his neutrality or intervenes, and on how the candidates position themselves on the war, the economy and the party’s direction. Vance has not announced his 2028 intentions, and Trump’s remarks leave the question open. If Vance runs, he must explain his war comments to a base loyal to Trump; if he does not, the field will be wide open. The new Democratic House majority will soon test the administration on oversight, spending and foreign policy.
